In Brightest Day...
Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Turning Sorrow into Strength
Previous Chapter Next ChapterPinkamena Diane Pie was resting in one of the guestrooms of the Orange compound. The moment they arrived in the city the Apple family immediately sought out their relatives in hopes of having a place to stay. Opon arriving and explainong the situation, they were taken in without a second thought and given their own individual rooms to stay in.
Pinkie staring out the window longingly, the image of her best friends anger fueled actions still present within her mind. “Dashie…” She sighed a bit while trying to think back to her better times with tears in her eyes. "W-why.... why do you hate me Dashie? I-I didn't mean to make you unhappy..."
"Pinkie?" Applebloom called out. "Ah just wanted to let you know that we're moving some supplies to the shelters." She explained as she entered the room. "We could use your help…"
"Hm? Oh... sure. Be there in a moment." Pinkie said with a sigh as she got up and left to go help them.
Following her down the hall, the two came to the front door where Aunt and Uncle Orange, Big Mac, Night Light, and Twilight Velvet packing several supplies into a wagon, from blankets and sleeping bags to different kinds of food and beverages.
Velvet noticed Pinkie's depressed expression and approached her. "Excuse me Pinkie, are you feeling OK?"
"Nah. I'm okie-dokie." Pinkie said trying to put on the best fake smile she could but her hair was still down and she still looked like she wanted to cry. "So where do you need to move this stuff to?"
“We're bringing all of this to the shelters they put up in the park.” Sunflower explained as she placed saddlebags onto her little sister. “With this crazy invasion going on a lot of Ponies have lost their homes, the least we can do is help them out.”
"Okay. Well what are we waiting for silly fillies?" Pinkie asked with a big smile. "I'm eager to going to help others. They need to bring big cheery smiles."
Back in Cloudsdale, the Red Lantern trio continued their battle against the rampaging dragon.
"Mind telling me exactly HOW this thing got here?!" Rainbow shouted as she avoided a torrent of green flames.
"Someone drove it here dammit!" Gilda shouted as she shot napalm blood at the dragon which roared in pain. "Some mare with a purple light!"
As if responding to her statement, the chains around the dragon were immediately engulfed in a purple aura. From behind the dragon's back a figure in the same color armor appeared as more chains emitted from its ring.
".... wait that's..... FLUTTERSHY?!" Rainbow shouted as she flew up and looked her over. "It..... it really is you isn't it?"
Fluttershy glanced at Rainbow for a moment before letting out a groan of pain, the chains surrounding the Dragon began to snap as it continued to thrash violently. “D-Dash, I cannot hold him much longer! I-I cannot fight in this condition! I need to get them to safety!”
Before Rainbow could ask what she meant, she noticed that there appeared to be a floating lavender ball not too far from them, inside was none other than Rarity and an unconscious Diamond Dog.
"...Shy you realize who you're carrying is being controlled by that Nightmare Moon spy right?" Rainbow said as she glared at Rarity. "She was with her when I was fighting against that lavender coated bitch."
"Rainbow they're injured and they need to be moved to safety! Y-you can worry about your anger i-issues later! R-right now you need to help them!" Shy shot back as yet another chain broke on the dragon. Soon he'd be unchained and go on a rampage... something that Rainbow was not in the mood for.
Rainbow was about to retort, however she noticed a few sparks erupt from Fluttershy's ring.
She was running out of power.
Rainbow quickly turned to her friends who were using hit-and-run tactics to keep the dragon's attention away from them. "Girls, keep the big guy's attention on you! Don't let it leave the city!" She ordered before summoning several chain constructs that latched onto his neck.
She then glanced back at her childhood friend. "Me and the girls have enough ring power to handle this guy, you get those two somewhere safe and recharge."
"Thank you Rainbow.... I know it might not mean much but..... Twilight really is trying to help others." Fluttershy said as she start leaving. "You just need to give her a chance."
Rainbow watched as she flew off, taking the bubble with her. The dragon noticed this and immediately charged towards her retreating form. Only for Rainbow to hold him back, Scootaloo and Gilda quickly created their own chain constructs that latched onto his arms and wings. "Oh no you don't!"
The dragon just roared and spewed flames as it tried reaching towards where the others were going but became even angrier when he saw that he couldn't reach them. They were HIS! They belonged to him! Why was he being denied what was rightfully his?!
"Quick! Hold him down!" Gilda shouted as they attempted to pull him back. However, the dragon let out powerful roar and fiercely pulled on the chains connected to Scootaloo, yanking her towards him before slamming its tail into her, dispelling the chains and sending her flying out of the city.
"OH BUCK NO YOU DIDN'T DO THAT!" Rainbow roared as she summoned a hammer and slammed it down on the dragon's head, seeking to knock it out.
Unfortunately, she forgot that dragon scales are a lot harder and durable. The dragon roared in defiance as it spewed another fireball at her. Gilda quickly dispelled her chains and rushed to tackle her out of the way.
The dragon let out another roar as the orange light from his ring engulfed his body, as it looked around and realize that it's target had completely escaped. Narrowing its eyes in rage, it turned his attention to the two red lanterns and spewed another torrent the fire at them.
Fluttershy soon arrived at a cave that was in the side of a small mountain and landed at the entrance. The bubble dissipated at that moment. "Hurry inside. Quickly."
"Darling? Are you sure you'll be able to handle Spike?" Rarity asked she carefully carried the Diamond Dog into the cave. "I mean, your ring is rather low on power…"
"There's no need to worry about that, you to just stay safe." She stated before her ring glowed, summoning an indigo lantern.
“With indigo light I take great care,
To stop all evil whenever it dare,
To those who are gripped with great despair,
Compassion shall guide you, for this I swear!”
Rarity covered her eyes as the light soon disappeared leaving Fluttershy looking rather revitalized. "Now I'll be right back Rarity. Take care of our friend please?"
Rarity glanced back at the canine and nodded with a sigh. "Fine, but if he starts trying to make me dig for gems again he's getting kicked where the sun don't shine!"
"Fair trade." Fluttershy said as she took back to the skies and flew towards Cloudsdale once more to try and restrain Spike. 'Just hold on Rainbow. I'm coming!'
Back in the city park, various tents and makeshift cottages were being put up for the refugees from all across the land, Royal Guards were patrolling every section of the area as the Oranges lead the rest of the group to the supply cottage.
'It's hopeless...' A depressed voice whispered within Pinkie's mind.
"They don't need to know that." Pinkie whispered viciously back to it. "Besides it's better to try and keep their hopes up then to just surrender and die to them."
"Spectrum!"
"Firefly?!"
She was brought out of her thoughts when she noticed a Royal Guard approach a stallion with a very familiar rainbow-colored mane. "I can't believe you're here!" The Mare sighed as she took off her helmet, revealing her aqua blue mane and pink coat. "Please, did you see my little Pegasus anywhere when you arrived? Was she-"
"I-I'm sorry..." He replied sadly. "I'd just left the airship from Cloudsdale, I didn't see her anywhere..."
'Really? So giving them false hope is better?' The voice retorted as the Guard wiped away her tears and put back on her helmet. 'Look around you, the world is going to Tartarus and back.'
"Yes.... and making everyone upset and sad is more likely to end it then save it.... after all hope is all anyone had when Discord took over and they all survived that." Pinkie said quietly. "That's what will save us here as well."
'Did it save us from Rainbow Dash?' The voice retorted harshly. 'No, she hates us, she attacked us! And say what you want about stupid Chaos God, you don't see him dragging corpses out of their graves!'
"And you just want to grovel... because you're not the big mare on campus anymore." Pinkie snapped back. "You've always been like this.... I should've just gotten rid of you years ago."
'And yet I still remain, because deep down you know it's pointless!' The voice scoffed as they passed by Lyra and Bonbon, the unicorn holding her close as she continued to weep.
"She's gone! My little sister's gone and it's all by fault!" She sobbed.
'See? Siblings and families are broken apart. Yet you're still claiming hope is what's going to save the day?' The voice chuckled. 'Face it. You're just saying it to try and force me away.... but even you don't believe a word of it.'
"S-Shut up!" Pinkie stuttered, trying to keep her tears from falling. "T-Twilight and AJ are still out there, they'll-!"
"Pinkie?! Oh sweet Celestia it is you!" A surprise to get familiar voice called out to her. Turning around she saw an adult mare with a sky blue coat and a swirly pink mane. "M-Mrs. Cake?!"
"Pinkie!" She cried as she hugged her. "Oh I'm so glad you're okay." She said with tears in her eyes before looking her over. "You're not injured? They didn't hurt you or anything did they?"
"No, I'm fine!" She smiled, hugging the grown mare. 'They survived! They actually survived! See Mena Mc-grumpy pants? There is still hope!' She thought triumphantly, the voice going silent for a moment. "I'm just happy to see you both survived! Where's Mr. Cake anyway? Is he helping out too?"
Mrs. Cake winced as she looked away in sorrow. "I... I'm sorry Pinkie. He... he's dead. Those horrible creatures killed him."
“Ugh, my head.” Scootaloo groaned as she slowly picked herself up. She shook her head and looked around in an attempt to get her bearings… and immediately realized that she appeared to be on a cliff covered in snow. "Aw geez, how hard did that Dragon hit me?!"
She cracked her neck as she got to her hooves. "Seriously that dragon's gonna get his ass kicked when I get back there!"
Her metallic wings spread wide as she took to the air… only to notice that the wind seemed to pick up when she reached the clouds, and her wings along with the rest of her body seemed to be slowly freezing over. "What the-?"
A haunting shriek suddenly got her attention as she looked behind her. Her eyes widened in fear for a moment, only for her to smirk at her new opponent. "Y'know, it kinda makes sense that I'd run into something like you..."
However the creature was more... timid. Like it was scared of her. "...are you kidding me? You literally..... you're the scared one? Dude that's supposed to be ME that's scared."
The creature shook its head, seemingly moving back as the wind continued to whirl around them. Scootaloo released a brief pulse of energy, completely incinerating the ice and creating a shield around her. Upon witnessing her use her power the creature let out another shriek… one that seemed to be less out of fear and more out of respect. "Ah, I see now." Scootaloo nodded as she floated towards it. "It's my rage you can sense.... rage greater than anything you could feed off of, right?"
The creature nodded as it slowly approached her. “Well then…” Scootaloo began as she raised her hoof, her ring glowing brightly as she summoned a ring construct. “How about a little snack in exchange for your loyalty?” Her smile grew wider as the creature got closer. “I've always wanted a pet.”
Back in Manehattan, Pinkie sat near a lake in the park, contemplating how things had gotten sob bad. Her home was gone, one of the Ponies that took her in and gave her a home was dead, and these horrific creatures were quickly overtaking Equestria.
'Just give in... you lost most of what was yours. Just give up.' Mena whispered to her.
“Shut up…” She whispered, glaring down at her reflection, a darker version of herself smiling back at her.
'OH come on. You think you can just hold me off forever? I'll break free.... you just have to give up.... come on now.... just give in and surrender to me.' Mena said with a laugh.
A large explosion immediate caught her attention as loud sirens started going off.
"Emergency alert! Emergency alert! Manehattan is under attack! I repeat, Manehattan is under attack!!"
Pinkie quickly ran outside after hearing that. She then looked around and saw that everyone was panicking and scared.... and even some just seemed to accept they were going to die. 'They all understand.... just. GIVE. UP. DAMN YOU.' Mena growled.
As she looked up at the sky as saw various undead Ponies descending from above, blasting apart buildings and killing anyone they came into contact with. The Royal Guards were putting up a good fight, but they were vastly outnumbered.
"I... I... I can't..."
'WHY NOT!?'
"B-because-"
"STAY BACK! I'M WARNING YOU!!" She heard a voice screaming, turning around she saw Big Mac and Night Light attempting to hold off the creatures while their families ran for cover. However as they fled Babs tripped just as they reached a building.
"CUZ, NO!" Applebloom cried out, quickly running back for her.... only for one of the zombies to lunge at them from above.
"BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW!!"
In a surprising burst of speed that Rainbow Dash would be proud of, Pinkie rushed towards the creature in a blind rage and slammed her body into it with all her might. The creature was too stunned by the party pony's attacked to react properly to consider what happened and thus was sent flying back further than expected. Pinkie turned to them two relatives. "RUN! I'll hold this ugly meanie off!"
"But.... but Pinkie-"
"GO!" She shouted. The two just did as she said as Pinkie snorted at the zombie. Mena growling and worried... Pinkie never truly had this kind of stubbornness before in these situations. 'Please just... you know it's hopeless-'
"No... I've always turned to you when I was sad or a meanie... I... I need to move on... I need to know.... no... I DO know that there's something more powerful than sorrow and pity.... I believe in hope!"
The creature snarled as it summoned a claw construct and lunged at the Party Pony, ready to end her life right then and there…
‘Hope detected.’
At that moment however, a blue meteor shot down from the sky and landed right between them, knocking the creature back a few feet and enveloping Pinkie in a bright blue bubble.
‘You have been chosen.’
"GILDA YOU GOT HIM CHAINED DOWN YET?!" Rainbow shouted as Spike nearly chomped down on her again. "CAUSE THIS SHIT'S GETTING OLD REAL FAST!"
"I'M TRYING!" Gilda screamed as she summoned three constructs in the form of cobras that lunged at the dragon, clamping onto its wings and tail. "THIS THING... IS FUCKING STUBBORN...." She grunted as the dragon continued to thrash around.
While keeping its attention on Rainbow, its tail was surrounded by an orange glow which manifested itself into the form of a smaller round dragon covered with spikes. The mini-dragon opened its mouth revealing several rows of teeth and roared, sending a powerful sonic wave at the Griffin.
"GILDA!" Rainbow shouted as she turned and growled at the dragon. "You're gonna suffer you scaled little punk."
“I have returned!” Fluttershy called out as she flew up through the clouds, her armor completely restored. “I believe I can pacify Spike once more, but I'll need him to be restrained first!”
"Easier said than done!" Rainbow shouted as she was grabbed by one of Spike's claws. "SON OF A BITCH WHY?!"
The dragon simply gave her a malicious smirk as he immediately opened his mouth, exhaling a giant fireball at her point-blank.
However before it could reach her a red ice wall appeared in front of it and stopped the flame, for lack of a better word, cold. Everyone stared in shock as the ice soon faded as Scootaloo appeared back in action. "Sorry I'm late to the party! I got a new pet to play with!"
Rainbow's jaw dropped as she stared at the creature she was riding, it appeared to be a ghostly stallion, a creature she'd only ever heard about in Hearth's Warming Eve tales.
A Windigo.
But this one was different from the ones that'd been described to her, instead of a beast that seemed to be a frozen spirit accompanied by a fitting aura that chilled the very air around it, this one was blood red with flames wafting off of it and crimson lightning crackling around it.
"A Windigo?! How in Equestria did you get your hooves on A WINDIGO?!" Gilda shouted, having pulled herself out of the rubble.
Apparently the big guy sees my ring as a five-course-meal!" Scootaloo shouted with a smirk as she summoned a hammer. "Now how about we wrap this up? This feels like it's taking forever."
"Not unless you can immobilize him!" Fluttershy called out as the dragon smashed through the ice wall and lunged at the Windigo.
"Well hold on! Let me try this!" Scootaloo shouted as she lifted the hammer over her head as she flew above the dragon's head. "AND GOOD NIGHT BIG GUY!" She shouted as she brought the hammer down on him.
.... only for the Dragon to immediately catch the hammer in its jaw. With a loud *CRUNCH* keep it down and completely shattered before giving the young Pegasus a fierce head butt that sent her flying into the cloud-ground.
"Yeah… we already tried that, didn't work." Gilda sighed is Fluttershy landed beside the young Pegasus.
"Oh sure, NOW YOU TELL ME!"
Everyone was cut off however when the Windigo's angered howl echoed through the city, the wind started picking up as crimson lightning and fire begin to swirl around the beast.
"....holy shit." Rainbow said as the Wendigo kept circling Spike. He kept snapping at Windigo but each time he merely grabbed cold air.
As the Windigo continued to fly around the dragon, Rainbow noticed that it's bottom half was being encased in some sort of red ice. "It's trapping it... quick! G! Scoots! Tornado formation! Flutters, be ready to calm this thing down!" She shouted as she flew towards the struggling beast.
Fluttershy got into position and began chanting something quietly while Scootaloo and Gilda followed Rainbow and began circling Spike faster and faster.
The faster they went, the stronger the winds became as the Windigo continued to howl, soon the ice began to encase his upper half along with his wings as he vainly tried to spew more fire, only for it to be dissipated by the strong winds.
"Shh... there's no need to worry." Fluttershy said as she held her staff out and then... her eyes glowed. "Nok." And with that Spike felt a strange calm flow over him.
The dragon attempted to look away, but the ice had frozen him in place, forcing him to endure her hypnotic gaze, even more powerful than before.
As the rage within him slowly began to vanish, Fluttershy briefly summoned a collar around his neck, bringing him back under her control…
"Woo. That was a battle and a half." Rainbow said as she wiped her brow. "Nice going there Flutters." She said with a smirk.
“Yeah, not bad for the kid who was scared of her own shadow.” Gilda added as she flew up next to her, while Scootaloo was petting the Windigo affectionately.
"Well I mean... I had to move past that since.... monsters are everywhere." Fluttershy said with a gulp. "But Rainbow.... I'm still disappointed in you."
“In me? For what?!” Rainbow asked in confusion. “We’re all on the same side! We’re taking down those monsters and taking back Equestria!”
"Then we shouldn't be passing the blame around and assuming the worst in others! That's how Commander Typhoon stole Hurricane's position and became a tyrant and it's how your uncle stole from you!" Fluttershy snapped. "You..... you owe someone an apology.... I'll help you but I'm... I'm not your friend until you do."
For a second Rainbow felt a part of her heart shatter when she heard that. Her best friend, the mare she'd grown up, the only one she felt closer to than Gilda.... was turning against her.
All because of her.
"Hey! Now listen here you-!" Gilda began, only for the cyan Pegasus to hold her wing out in front of her, silencing her.
"Y-You wanna defend that witch, th-then fine! B-But don't come crying to me when she betrays you for that monster!" She snapped as the ice around the dragon dissipated.
"When are you going to stop and listen to yourself!" Fluttershy shouted. "You keep saying she's a traitor and a monster but she's done nothing to prove that she is one! She knew Nightmare Moon from stories Rainbow! I know you grew up listening to them to so does that make you or me a traitor then?!"
“Oh yeah?! Well how does that explain her constantly snooping around town?! Not to mention the fact that she showed up less than a day before that monster did! And I know for a fact that she wasn't interested in the festival since she kept on distancing herself from everyone else!” Rainbow fired back, her armor flaring up.
"...if you honestly feel that way... then fine." Fluttershy said with tears in her eyes. Soon Spike broke free from the ice but due to Fluttershy's power he wasn't violently attacking anyone. He seemed at peace.
Fluttershy flew up to the dragon and slowly and carefully removed the ring from his claw, the dragon briefly flinched as the ring seemed to resist her. "You never truly wanted to cause harm, the battle is over, rest easy young dragon..." She spoke in a soothing voice.
The dragon slowly let the calm take over as he soon floated up to her. "Now come... we have ponies to save."
Rainbow could only watch as the mare she once called her friend flew off. The moment she was out of sight she let a few tears fall.
"Hey Dash come on. We're heading back to base." Gilda said as she placed a claw on her shoulder.
"Not to be the bearer of bad news but, while I was on my way back from the mountains, I noticed a large group of those zombies on the move in the distance…" Scootaloo said as she flew towards the with her pet. "They seemed to be heading west."
"Well then." Rainbow said quietly as she growled and cracked her neck. "I say we end that idea before they get any further."
"I actually think I've got an idea for that..." Scootaloo smirked, glancing at her pet and then at the abandoned Rainbow Factory. "An if it works, those bastards won't know what hit them!"
As Pinkie came to, she found herself floating in a deep blue void, small light blue mist swirled around her as she was pulled forwards, a large and ominous shadow suddenly appearing and looming over her…
"..... oh, this is the part where I get eaten." Pinkie said as the shadow grew closer to her. However, as the figure before her grew bigger and she realized it was some sort of bird, it descended upon her and wrapped its wings around her in a comforting embrace. Almost instantly any negative emotions she may have had vanished completely.
'Pinkie Pie of Equestria....' A majestic yet gentle voice called out. 'You have the ability to instill great hope. Welcome to the Blue Lantern Corps.'
"....sweet!" Pinkie said with a peppy voice as a blue light began to envelope her…. however before it could she held up her hoof in a 'wait' motion and turned around. Pushing herself out of the creatures wings she floated towards a small dark blue pit, and at the bottom was Mena, sitting dejectedly on her flank and silently weeping.
Pinkie swam through the gloomy pit, gently turning her around and holding out her hoof. Mena hesitantly took it… only to be pulled into a loving embrace. For a few seconds she struggled, but eventually relaxed into the hug.
“Welcome home…” Pinkie smiled as the gloomy pit vanished around them as the bird descended upon them both, Mena smiled back as she slowly phased into Pinkie's body, and they were engulfed in a bright light...
As the Black Lanterns surrounded the bubble Pinkie was trapped in. Three Leaf landed beside them with an eager yet malicious smile. “Well, well, well… looks like we'll be getting a new member and eliminating a new threat at the same time!” She cackled as her ring glowed menacingly.
However at that moment, the entire group heard Pinkie Pie’s voice coming from inside the bubble.
"In warmest days and Coldest nights,
Our hooves shall sound with thunderous might!
When all seems lost and evil strikes,
Look to the stars... For hope burns bright!"
Pinkie was released from the bubble with a loud *POP*, releasing a burst of energy knocking the group back as the light died down, revealing her in new attire. She now wore light blue glove fittings with wristbands and transparent "wings" on her glove fittings, and a Blue ring on her right hoof. A turquoise choker around her neck was cyan edges, with the symbol of her ring in the center. The mini-wings on her chest were a bluish-silver, and in the center, and atop that was a light-blue heart-shaped brooch with silver wings on the sides. She had two belts above her frilly skirt, one dark-blue and one light blue, with another icon from her ring in the center. Her skirt had three layers, a transparent one the top, then light blue in the middle, and deep blue on the bottom. Her boots were black with azure borders at the tops. She wore earrings that looked like her cutie mark. And atop her head was a tiara with symbol of her ring, and on her back were white, transparent feathered wings.
As she descended to the ground, her mane returned to it’s poofy nature as she glared at the Black Lanterns with a surprisingly wide smile.
“IT’S PARTY TIME!!!”
