Chapter 2: New and dangerous discoveries.

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The horse, it talked, it talked!!

The purple horse stared at me, horror in it's eyes, it had a horn too, but that was the least of my issues.

I'm hallucinating, this can't be right I kept saying in my head, with good reason, there was a cartoon purple talking horse in front of me!

=============

Twilight first thought the thing in front of her was like the creatures from before, but it was different. It's skin color was more of a tan than grey and lifeless, it had clothes on and seemed intelligent enough to react to her speaking. It's reaction also showed it had emotion unlike the other creatures, though the emotion it showed was of shock, even frightened. Twilight guessed she had the same look, just more terrified than shocked.

Her face softened from terror to surprise, finding the creature of no real threat as of yet. The hairless monkey had something on it's back and those wierd tentacle hooves, Twilight guessed the thing could grab the odd contraption on it's back if it needed to. Which it did when she started to step forward.

===========

I grabbed the dragunov off my back and aimed it at the thing as it started to move forward, it may have looked harmless, but living it the apocalypse made me always assume the worse, like this was some sort of mutated creature trying to lure it's prey closer, even if it sounded far fetched, it could happen.

"Stay back!" I yell, taking a step away from the horse. It had a look of shock on it's face when I spoke, like it has never heard of a human speaking before, just like I haven't heard of horses speaking before.

"You can-?!" The horse started speaking again, before my reaction came in as I pulled the trigger, making the loud bang it usually does. The horse was lucky I missed it by a few inches, making the thing jump backwards. I still thought it was a threat however, and booked it out of there.

After getting out of the cave I ran over to the truck, looking back at the cave entrance. I thought the thing was still in there, I didn't know if I should close off the entrance or something in case it tried to run loose. Or if I should leave it alone, if it was really a hallucination. I ended up grabbing a large piece of scrap from a small metal shed that was destroyed when the ground fractured, and placed it over the cave entrance. Then jumped in the truck and drove to New L.A.

=========

Twilight appeared again from the portal, right before Luna's eyes. The Princess of the night right away went to help the unicorn, her face was shocked and confused. A few gaurds also came up to help the mare, even if no real injuries were showing on Twilight's body.

"Are you ok Twilight? What happened?!" Luna asked her in worry, Twilight finally regaining her senses. The gaurds laid the mare in one of the tents they just set up, Luna next to her.

"The things, there was one in there." Twilight said, clearly whatever happened shocked her. Luna was alert, hearing "things" was all she needed to know that one of those creatures from before were on the other side of that portal.

"Can you tell me in detail what happened?" The Princess asked, her serious tone was enough for Twilight to sit up straight and answer her question.

"Well once the bright light appeared, I felt myself sucked into something, then getting launched onto something else. When I started to regain my senses there was some movement under me, when it dissapeared and my sight was clear again. One of those creatures was there, it looked different though, it's skin was tan, not grey and it's face was....in tact, but it could....speak, in our language." Twilight explained, Luna listened making sure to catch every detail, except she wasn't expecting the last part.

"It could speak Equestrian?"

"Yes, it spoke in a very stallionish tone too."

"What did it say?"

Twilight thought about what happened in the moment in more detail. "It said, Stay Back! Then grabbed some wierd thing on it's back and pointed it towards me." Princess Luna looked baffled, but then asked what happened after. "Well, I was about to respond, when some sort of bang went off and I heard something wizz past my face. It made my body jolt out of the way, and now here I am"

"That seems impossible, the creatures we saw before were stupid, but this tan skinned one has intelligence?" The Princess asked, all Twilight did was nod. Luna had a lot to think about now. "Well, I suggest getting rest, when the researchers come tommorow we will fully inspect this."

"Be careful with the portal, thingy, the being on the other side had a strange reaction to me, and all I can guess is the last part being hostile." Luna nodded to what Twilight just explained, figuring that if any more of them are on the other side they will have the same reaction.

Twilight however didn't get any sleep the rest of the night, she just met some new intelligent creature on the other side of a portal, if that's what it is. She definitely wanted answers, but how would a few Canterlot researches explain the wierd item the being was holding? Or how he could speak? Or, Or.

Twilight also stopped herself from going on a mindless rant in the middle of the night. She did devise a plan however, she wanted answers, and she was gonna get them....after she gets some rest.

New L.A.

I ended up taking a few detours to New L.A, what do I do? Waltz in there saying "Hey! I just had a talking horse land on me through a dimensional portal thingy!"? I took the detours to get the story straight, if I just said I met a purple talking unicorn horse thing, they would probably think i'm completely hallucinating and becoming insane(which is totally a possiblity). The story I thought up hopefully will convince Lucas it isn't anything to worry about, if I can get them to not worry about the pulses, which seemed to have stopped ever since I touched the wierd, whatever it is. I will be able to investigate if it was me hallucinating or if I actually did just see a talking purple horse.

Pulling up to the front gate, the two gaurds that are supposed to be watching the front gate were asleep, it wasn't anything new, but can get frustrating to wake those heavy sleepers. Luckily I was able to find a way, it's called pressing down on the middle of the steering wheel and...

Honk! Honk! The gaurds jolted up immediately, looking down below to see me in my truck. I couldn't get a good look at them but I knew they were pissed, but they opened the doors anyway, after flipping me off.

All the cars were parked in a part of the storage area, that was luckily placed closeby to to the armory, where i'll meet the "wonderful" man in front of the armory's door.

Placing the keys on a small rack, which held about a dozen keys for the different vehicles, I started to head over to the armory. Ramirez was there like usual, i'm pretty sure he took the overnight shift so he could catch me when I got back.

"Eh! Done playing with guns for today? I would like to catch Julia before she wakes up, so hurry it up." Or maybe he was forced to wait here until I get back, so the weapon is reported to be placed back where it was. It's not something for Ramirez to miss a chance to have some "fun" with a woman.

"Just go, i'll inform them to send another gaurd to stand idle." I reply, it seems like that was all Ramirez needed. He opened the locked armory door for me then bolted off, giving me the key.

Placing my Dragunov back in it's place and placing the clips back in the ammo supply, I didn't place my extra bullets for my Revolver back however. Never know when your gonna need it. I thought back to the events last night, the pulses, the horse, the grass and everything else. It was definitely something I need to keep secret, talking about this could cause backlash on me, but also could cause uneeded controversey about the people leading the colony. About them hiding secrets from the citizens, sadly they wouldn't be wrong with that controversey.

Locking up the armory, I head out to The Offices. The Offices as it's called is pretty much the place the New L.A. Government does they're business. Each team leader of the scavengers, the General of the militia and the mayor work in The Offices, make descisions and most importantly, decide whether new events should go public. My plan is for the story to make it seem like no issue, like there is no reason to worry about the pulses, which will be extremely difficult to most. Luckily even as a seven year old kid I loved to learn the latest innovations for technology, luckily one will be able to explain the patches of grass and possibly the pulses.

The Office was made in an office building, go figure, but luckily the building was in decent shape and was well defended. Each team leader of the scavengers got they're own office to work with, so did the General and Mayor. Stepping into Lucas' office, I could definitely see him working as he documented all the resources found during scavenges, i'm guessing he worked all night.

"Ah, your back. So what did you find out?" Lucas said once he noticed me, getting up from his chair. If I even said one thing wrong it could be bad, so it was now or never.

"It wasn't as big of a deal as you think, have you heard of the AccuGrow?" I ask, all Lucas gave me was a confused look, all good signs.

"They are basically farming machines made in 2018, they give off pulses that through some technology I know nothing about, are able to give nutrients, sunlight and water to the plants, if I remember they were quite expensive and had to be hand built for farmers. There was a beat up one that some goons were messing around with, probably turning it on, when I took out the goons a bullet may have hit the machine, probably because the pulses dissapeared after I took them out" I explain, there were a few flaws with this story. The main one was that the pulses were invisible to the human eye, and who the heck would need an AccuGrow in Los Angeles?

Lucas however I have know Idea if he bought it or not, he was thinking about what I just said, he does this all the time but it is the most unerving thing in the world when your lying.

"So your saying that you recklessly destroyed this machine that could help us make crops?" He asked, mad of course, but it looked like he was mad ate destroying a machine than figuring out I lied.

"Y-yes" I try may best at acting this out, but I have no absolute clue how it turned out. Lucas was a reasonable person, but if you make too big of a mistake, how most people in New L.A. say it..."you put your shlong on the chopping block, and Luke has the axe."

"I have to say i'm very disappointed that you recklessly destroyed what could be a very valuable machine to the community, but you did give us information that can help us in the future. Since the rest of your track records on scouting missions have been perfect and well informative, i'll let this slide. Only this one time!" Lucas states, I gulped to make it look like i'm worried, when really i'm very relieved for him to just 'let it slide'. "But, if you ever see one of these machines again, be careful so we can bring it back."

"Yes sir" I say, turning around to leave.

"When was the last time you called me sir?" Lucas said, he didn't say anything else as I walked off, but I could feel his eyes staring at me.

==========

I went straight home afterward, walking up to a small crumbling apartment building, opening the door. It was the building I lived in, since my home before the wasteland was blown a few hundred metres away from where it's supposed to be. Heading up the stairs, being careful that I go around the hole on the 5th step, I right away went down the hall into apartment #203. Aka, home sweet home.

I was right away greeted by screaming, and seeing a small figure run back and forth between the small living room. The apartment that my surviving family lives in is small, about 1,000 square feet with a small living room, kitchen, one bathroom, and two bedrooms. I was able to have my own room.

"Mom! Big Bro is home!" The little figure said as she saw me, it was my little sister Lily, she is about 7 years old. I right away wen't over to Lily, picking her up. Luckily she wasn't that heavy, though i'm having some difficult keeping her in the air.

"My your getting big! Before I know it your gonna be a grown woman." I say to her, bringing Lily close so she could wrap her arms around me. After the hug was over and I placed her back down, I could hear the bathroom door open showing my other family member.

"Jared, welcome back." My mother said to me calmly, coming up to hug me as well. I knew however she was worried sick about me when I didn't come home last night.

"Thanks Ma." I said, letting go of the hug. Then looking back to Lily. "Hey Lil' Sis, could you go play in your room for a bit? I need to talk to mommy" I ask her, which she nods and scurries to the room she and Mom share. Once she dissapears I face my mother again, who was waiting on the beat up couch.

"Where were you this time Jared? Your making me worried." Mom asks, I rub the back of my neck, i'm not supposed to be disclosing anything about my "overtime" last night, but who can lie to there mother?

"I was on another scout" I said, my Mother kept silent for a bit, but she wasn't happy.

"Why do you keep doing those? I don't know if you are dead or missing because of them, and don't even get me started on Lily." I faced my mom directly after saying that.

"I have to, it keeps us with money we need in this community. If I just did the scavenges Lily won't get the education she needs, these scouts are all I can do to keep Lily, and you, safe and getting by."

"We don't need the education, we need you here. What do you think will happen if you do die out there? The repurcutions would be horrible on us, at least if you just do the scavenges I know your squad will keep you safe, but when you are alone, out there in the wasteland. I don't know what to think."

I got up from the couch, starting to walk off, I couldn't take it anymore. "I have to do it, for you, for Lily, and for this colony." I didn't look back as I went into my room.

I couldn't stop doing the contracts, this colony is darker that what the surface shows, if I stopped. The consequences for just leaving are bad, very bad. I keep doing the scouts to keep them safe from those monsters running this colony, including Lucas. I hate them all...

And sadly i'm gonna be heading back again to The Crack tonight...
