Chapter 49: 49. Genocide, Part Two: Heroes Fall

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The Anomaly chuckled at the thumbs down and hateful comments given after the first part of his tale, drinking in all the cruelty, the pettiness, the nastiness on display on the site, indulging in it like a fine wine. Ahhhhh. The world was getting closer to being ready to end. But he had to move on. He kicked open a door in Ponyville, inside Octavia and Vinyl wide eyed in fear.

They never had a chance.

Soon after, the school where Cheerilee had hidden many foals was ablaze with dark power.

Not long after that, The bodies of several specific animal friends lay in the street, everyone running for their lives but to no avail. Only Friendship Castle seemed safe, and it was here that Chara had been taken by Starlight, along with several other survivors of the first part of the Genocide run.

When Chara told the others the terrible news of the deaths of Toriel, Asriel... and Frisk, the first response was an angered wail by the King of Monsters, his eyes blazing.

"My wife.... my sons..... Chara, my last child.... please say... it isn't so."

"I'm sorry King Dad." He said, head bowed low. "The Completionist killed them all, Frisk before my eyes. His SOUL has been shattered. And they were just the first it has killed."

“No. Not...the first.” A quietly furious voice whispered out as they all turned their heads.

There, in the doorway, Shinedown held Squirt in his arms, the young mixed-blooded Earth Pony looking so small in death, his adopted father falling to his knees. “...I walked the entire way here after...s-seeing...I...he…” He began to stutter and shake. “...he’d gone to track d-down Error, and...and I thought he was going to kill him but...no, h-he did me proud, he…”

Twilight knelt by him, gently stroking his head as Sans knelt by little Squirt, easing him onto the floor as Shinedown rested his hooves on his knees. “...he didn’t kill him. He was trying to be kind. T-To forgive. And then I saw that thing stab him through the back and finish Error off and-and he...he SAW me.”

Shinedown gripped his knees more tightly. “He just laughed. And I know why. Cuz he w-wanted me to see that and suffer a-and know I couldn’t stop him.”

Nearby, the Mane Six looked on in horror. Very few families and almost no children had managed to make it here. Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity were all in mourning in their own ways, as none of the CMC had survived. Big Macintosh was still unaccounted for, as was Angel Bunny and Spike. Nearby, Undyne was sobbing over an empty lab coat, still covered with the dust of her wife, who had saved Undyne's life by giving her own. The Royal Guard was in shambles, only Doggo and Papyrus surviving on the monster side, and only a single surviving unicorn on the pony side. Sans stood nearby in total shock.

“...part of me wants to kill him for all he did.” Shinedown softly whispered. “...but the rest of me wants him to SUFFER FOR ALL HE’S DONE.” He began to growl, his teeth grinding as he rose up, heading for the exit.

“WAIT.” Sans called out, Shinedown halting in place. “i  got a look at him and quick judgment in before he could see me on my way here. he's already at LV17." He said simply. ".... and he is not stopping. with every murder, his power grows. it is why chara seemed so powerful after murdering so many.... because he feeds on LV."

Chara finally spoke up. "Can't we reset somehow?! Bring everyone back?"

Twilight shook her head. "The only way I found takes something I cannot understand.. .a magic from beyond our world. I don't know what it even means. Even now though Celestia is gathering the strongest magic users to Canterlot to try and figure it out." She turned to Starlight. "I want you to go, and take Chara and Sans with you."

Starlight blinked. "Why us?"

There was a pause... and then... "Because I am going to try and stop him. I still have access to the elements. With all six of us together we stopped Tirek when we went into our Super Alicorn forms. It may just be enough."

Undyne stood up. "I will retrieve the elements for you from the Tree of Harmony you told me about. But I need time."

Asgore took up his trident. "You will have it. I will buy as long as I can. I owe... I owe my family that." he turned to Chara and handed the boy his crown. "You are the last hope Chara. You must be kept safe."

Chara turned away. "You don't understand... there was a reason he spared me.... I... I...."

"HE'S COMING!!!!!!!!" Someone shouted.  Everyone looked out and saw the shadowlike form of the Anomaly. But now.. .now he was bigger, his dagger now a sword, his form about nine feet tall. He was truly feeding on the EXP of the dead.

"Farewell my friends." Asgore said simply, smiling sadly as he opened the door and strode out. Chara punched the ground in frustration.

"I didn't tell him... I am not complete. My missing pieces.... without them I already am going to die...." He murmured, Shinedown glancing in his direction, eyes widening a bit before he raced towards the kitchen, dragging Chara with him. “Wh-where are were going?” Chara asked.

“I need to whip up something to help buy you all time too. I know what might just work, hand me that baking powder!”

“Why?”

“We’re making a special...familiar...PIE.”

*****************

"Wasn't expecting you yet." The Completionist said, the body of a large red pony with a green apple cutie mark in his hand as he tossed it aside. Big Macintosh had tried to save Cheerilee but it had been in vain. "You I was saving for last. I wanted your whole world to crumble about you."

Asgore clenched his trident in a mix of hate, fear, and DETERMINATION. "You... killed my wife."

The Completionist laughed. "Why should this killing invoke such a response? I have done it many times with the help of many people, even some who let the world see their twisted definition of what entertainment was. Just because you reconnected this time doesn't make it any less worthless.. .as is your pitiful resistance now." He looked about. "Look around you, King of the Dead. Ponyville is no more. Just a graveyard full of dust and corpses, save for what hides like a snail in its shell. And even that will prove futile. But you won't get to see it."

Asgore gritted his teeth. "Perhaps. But perhaps I might get even lucky. I will just have to try and see."

The being chuckled. "By all means, try."

Asgore charged, but clearly it was hopeless from the word go. The Completionist was faster, stronger, and far more powerful than the King, and clearly was just toying with him as the battle went on. Every now and then the blade of shadow struck, the being laughing as Asgore writhed in pain.

"You know, your wife was so easy to kill. All I did was knock on the door. She mistook me for her child, can you believe that? Al I had to do was strike her form, still holding the fresh baked pie, and did I ever revel in that look of shock and betrayal as I struck.

"And then she saw who it was, and she screamed before I cut her head off."

"SHUT UP!" Asgore shouted, stabbing the being, but shocked as the Anomaly merely took the sword and sliced the trident, cutting it in two. Asgore shouted in rage and threw out a firestorm, but the Anomaly had fought Asgore many times over many RESETS, and dodging the blasts was old hat.

"Heh, Your little son was next, who ran to his mom's corpse. It was so easy to cut down the 'God of Hyperdeath' at that moment, and crush his feeble little SOUL."

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Asgore screamed, huge shoots of flame igniting everywhere like the inside of an awakening volcano. But still the Completionist dodged, and those that hit merely seemed to scratch him.

"But the best was Frisk. Oh the look on Chara's face when I reminded him of the truth, and his stunned look as I ran through his human partner and brother. It was simply divine."

"YOU DEMON!!!!!!" Asgore shouted, then went stiff as the blade ran him through.

"Best of all... you don't know Chara's secret. How if I die, so does he, because I have the rest of his SOUL. Oh sure, maybe he could get his missing pieces from Asriel and Frisk... but that’s a little hard when they are dead... like you."

He brought the blade up, and Asgore's stunned looked rended as his form split in half, falling into two piles of dust, the robe setting on them. The Anomaly turned back to Ponyville and laughed manically as he saw the battle had set it all aflame. But as he turned back, he saw another sight.

There before him stood Twilight, along with her friends, all wearing the Elements of Harmony. But they looked different now, their every form now looking like a rainbow of color, their combined power through the roof.

"Ah, so the legendary Princess of Friendship and her little buddies faces me now. How wonderful. With your LV I will surpass Chara and become a being of infinite power."

"Not gunna happen sugah!" Applejack said. "Ya killed my kin, and now ya'll ar gunna pay!"

Pinkie glared. "Those babies never hurt anyone.. .and you...."

Rarity spoke up. "Not to mention poor little Sweetie Belle and her friends!"

Rainbow Dash stared. "We won't let you hurt anyone else, because our friendship will overcome anything!"

Fluttershy stared with hate in her eyes. "And after what you did to all my critter friends, and all our pony and monster friends... you deserve no mercy."

Twilight spread her wings, the six all shooting beams of rainbow light at the figure. It was so bright and powerful it seemed to almost blot out the sun. The power it had was overwhelming, and all around the landscape was almost completely eradicated.

But as the light faded, the six stared in horror as the red eyed and red smiling figure just laughed, barely hurt.

"Is that the best the six of you have?! I'm disappointed. It would take every being in Equestria to even touch me!"

"CHARGE!" RD said, the six moving in and engaging the being. But he was even more powerful now. He bobbed and weaved from the blows, and even when he was sent flying he got back up. At first, he didn't bother attacking, letting the six fight with all their heart.

But then... he struck. Everyone in the castle who was watching stared in horror at what happened next.

First went Fluttershy, her wings clipped before a final stab.

Then fell Rarity, who ran to her friend to try and revive her, only to be obliterated in dark magic the being now could use, a twisted variant of the Hyperdeath God. Too late Twilight realized he was not just stealing EXP, but like Tirek he could steal powers.

It was her last thought before she was cut in two.

Applejack charged, fighting hard with RD at her side, but it was not enough as the two were sent flying into the blazing inferno that was Ponyville now, their forms only seen for a moment, their screams echoing for miles.

Pinkie kept fighting, using her random powers and party cannons to confuse the Anomaly and doing good damage... but suddenly she was stabbed by the being, everyone in the castle in shock as their champions fell.

"NO!" Undyne shouted, running from the castle, taking her Undying form and charging the being with spear in hand. The anomaly looked her way and parried the spear, holding her down with one shadowy, now gigantic foot.

"I said before. Six alone cannot beat me. What made you think it would be any different with a different six as powerful as I am now!?" He said, turning to the castle. Undyne knew what he was about to do.

"EVERYONE RU-" But she said no more as she was tossed into the castle, unarmed and weakened. The other survivors went to run, Undyne turning to Papyrus.

"We got to buy time for everyone to get to Canterlot. This is our final stand." She turned to Sans. "Get Starlight and Chara to Canterlot especially, and whatever you DON'T LOOK BACK."

Sans was wide eyed. "but.... i...."

Papyrus smiled. "IT'S OKAY BROTHER! I WILL FIGHT WITH ALL I HAVE. JUST KNOW..... AS ANNOYING AS YOU ARE.... I LOVE YOU BRO."

Sans and Papyrus embraced as Sans went to lead the dozen or so survivors away, Chara and Starlight among them. Some tried to stay to try and avenge their friends but Sans used his Gaster Blasters to force them onward in a stampede to Canterlot. Only Undyne and Papyrus remained, brandishing their respective weapons.

"UNDYNE.... JUST SO YOU KNOW... IT HAS BEEN AN HONOR."

Undyne nodded, holding a bit of Alphys's dust. "You too Papyrus. Let's show that being what the Royal Guard can do." Together they emerged from the castle, weapons high, as the anomaly approached. "FOR EQUESTRIA!" They shouted, charging.

They fought well in that moment, parrying the blows of the Anomaly and landing many good hits. Undyne swiped at the Anomaly, spear surging forth as he ducked a bit but she grazed his shoulder. Papyrus's mighty Gaster Blasters enveloped the horrific abomination in burning heat. They forced him back, one foot at a time, and for a moment it looked as though their combined assault had damaged him deeply...

Until the inevitable occurred as in one blow... both their heads were severed.

The Anomaly walked on from the fight, not even caring to watch as the two last heroes dissolved into dust. And then…

“You’ve been busy, huh?”

The Anomaly began to grin even more widely as he turned, seeing Shinedown standing there, his bag slung over his shoulder, slightly opened, his dark blue eyes as cold and pitiless as Sombra’s ever could be. “...well, well. You’re level 18. How many people did you kill, my little pony?” The Anomaly inquired with an amused look upon its foul, unnatural face.

“...34.” Shinedown muttered. “...six of them were innocent. I didn’t...really mean for them to die. But they still did. Because of my stupidity and my pride and my little tricks. But no tricks. No. You don’t get theatricality. You don’t get fancy moves. I’m just going to cold blood PUT YOU IN THE GROUND.”

He shot forward, slamming his hooves into the Anomaly, forcing it back as it laughed. “Was that a love tap?” He sneered, being forced back further and further, past the dust piles of Papyrus and Undyne, towards a small courtyard lake off in the distance by a now-desiccated cherry tree. “Come now. You think I’m actually scared of you, you inkblooded little-”

And then Shinedown did something dirty and twisted. He ducked down, avoiding the Anomaly’s swipes, reaching into the dust piles in a fell swoop…

TOSSING IT INTO THE ANOMALY’S FACE. The thing’s eyes went wide for the brief moment before the dust hit his eye sockets, scarcely able to believe the Earth Pony would do something so low...and it clawed at its eyes, howling and screaming before Shinedown grabbed him by the neck…

And shoved him into the water. “Geeeeet DUNKED on!” Shinedown cried out, holding the anomaly under as he coldly gazed down through the surface of the dark lake, the anomaly coughing and sputtering and flailing about. It slashed at Shinedown with it’s arms, trying to stab at him, but Shinedown ignored the knife digging into him over and over, the thing’s aim was terrible thanks to the dust mixing in with the water…

“...take deep...deep...breaths.” Shinedown whispered. “...you’ll die quicker that way. Trust me. I’m the voice of experience.” He intoned, the thing’s flailing beginning to halt as it finally flopped down into the lake, seemingly dead…

But Shinedown wasn’t leaving anything to chance. He wrenched the limp body out, and tossed it onto the grass nearby, pulling out a small little pie. “Ahh, the wonders of magical ingredients and a magic kitchen. It’s a special little pie Chara and I made just...for you. The secret ingredient is LOVE. And, well...buttercups.” He remarked, shoving the pie squarely down the thing’s throat, forcing the mouth shut as the thing tried to rise back up, seemingly from the dead. The Anomaly stabbed into Shinedown again and again, his blood freely flowing from his form like runny swiss cheese…

But he held firm...and the thing began to cough and splutter and hack, turning on its side as blood oozed out from its mouth, Shinedown flopping onto his side, panting and heaving, letting his own blood flow freely as it intermingled with the dust-filled pond, turning it a soft pink. “...choke...on your...own...ironic...death…” He murmured. “And if I die now, that’s okay. Cuz I know that...Hell will be Heaven...if I can make you...spend eternity paying...for the people you hurt. So let’s...go to Hell...together.” He laughed softly, chuckling…

Until he saw the Anomaly standing up...dusting itself off, looking down at him and spitting out a piece of the pie.

“I’ve been. It’s overrated.” The Anomaly smirked, Shinedown’s eyes widening. “...I DON’T NEED TO BREATHE, fool. Or EAT. Chew on that...as you slowly die. Because believe me...I WILL enjoy your needless, ironic death.” It said, walking over to the lake, and calmly leaning down in it, sighing blissfully. “...ahhh. Pink is such a lovely color.” It whispered, Shinedown shuddering as the world began to become black and cold.

Equestria was doomed.

*******************

From where they were, Luna and Celestia sobbed. Ponyville and many of its inhabitants were dead, and the Anomaly was now stronger than Chara ever was, now at near LV50 thanks to defeating Twilight in her Alicorn form. With such power, he began to cross the world, hitting many of Equestria's sister countries, sparing no one.

Only a few from each land escaped, heading to Canterlot to cling to the barest possible hope for a miracle. That hope lay in a spell sent to the sisters, one detailing how to revive the fallen of a tragedy. But there was a catch, it required a power not of this world, a mighty power.

And with both Asgore and Toriel gone, as well as Frisk and Asriel, the most powerful magic users in the Underground were gone.

"Is this how it ends, sister?" Luna finally said. "Must we watch as the world falls around us?! I must fight it!"

"NO." Celestia said sadly. "As much as I want to, he is too powerful now. He is killing us all off in small groups. But even now many are giving their lives together the most powerful magic users across the world. If there is any hope, it lies in them."

Nearby, Chara held the crown, the last relic of his loving family. On seeing it he no longer cared about himself. If he died, it meant nothing if it could bring back those who had fallen. Besides, he wasn't supposed to be alive anyway. He poisoned himself with buttercups long ago and let himself die of it. he should still be dead. Yet his spirit had persisted to help Frisk and be his partner, even when the Anomaly made Chara force him down the Genocide route.

Now, here he was, an incomplete SOUL, a True Knife and a crown  in his hands. He knew what he had to do.

"Celestia.... I am going to fight it. I’m calling out to Gaster and we’ll fuse together to fight the Anomaly."

Starlight looked to him in shock. "NO! All my other friends are gone, I'm not losing you too!"

"I have to." Chara looked to them. "Frisk believed there was good in all of us. Sombra, may he rest in peace, proved there is good even in the worst of us. If Sombra was willing to die knowing all his sins, how can I do less." He looked to Starlight. "I will buy as much time as I can. I can fight him, I know I can, and I will have help."

Sans looked to Chara, knowing his plan. "ok kid.... if you think gaster will help... do it. but you better both come back."

Chara turned to Starlight. "There is one thing I got to do before I go. I have to do this or I will never forgive myself."

He smiled as he embraced Starlight, kissing her. Starlight hugged back, tightly, tears in her eyes.

"I wish I was older really. Then maybe..."

"I know." Starlight said with a sad smile. "Go. But you better come back."

Chara turned, waiting for Gaster to possess him, for their forms to fuse. This was their only shot, the only hope they had.

"And if we fail..... then it's all over...."

****************

Spike stood over Rarity's body, the only survivor left in Ponyville. He had finished sending letters of warning to everyone, and now he lay there, nearby the mare he loved, waiting for what would be, praying someone was listening. Praying for a miracle.
