"I am the night! But, um, a pleasant, breezy, well-lit summer-y entirely-not-dangerous one! *Squee*" - Night Shift -

Bat Ponies. Dirty. Evil. Blood-sucking. Thieving. Deceitful. Scum. Worst of all, servants of Nightmare Moon. Then there's thestrals, those bat ponies that the benevolent nobility have generously allowed back into pony society, albeit collared, licensed and monitored. This is the story of their struggle to live, to belong, all amidst rumours of the return of the 'Lord of Thestrals' whose blood promises freedom to all thestralkind and....

Wait a sec, this is a story about a bat nurse's everyday life. Who was she again? Oh, yes, Night Shift.

Night Shift is probably Equestria's most unassuming thestral, learning about life one page at a time from her little self-help book. Her life takes a turn one fateful night when she ends up an accidental nurse to Ponyville's accidental doctor. It has its perks, all the expired blood packs she can drink and all the nuzzles she can sneak in. Despite her name she prefers day shifts as she's afraid of the dark. Well, there's that and the fact that her favourite-est blood dono-, er, human ever, Doc, is awake mainly during the day.

Doc is probably Equestria's most bewildered human, learning about ponies one interspecies faux-pas at a time. And he's got to learn all about ponies, and fast, lest his lack of any actual qualifications finally earns the Nobility the excuse they need to give him the boot and shut down Ponyville Infirmary for good. His life's not all dodging controversy, however. He's also got to dodge the rather amorous changeling nurse bent on giving him hands-on teaching on pony biology, the nursing student constantly challenging him to duels for supremacy over the infirmary, the head nurse who is often out for his blood, often literally, the clinic's bat filly mascot's surprise snuggles and, of course, Night Shift's often deadly attempts at befriending him.

This is the story of Night Shift and Doc's normal everyday lives alongside the rest of the rag-tag bunch of outcasts running Ponyville Infirmary, the ever-put-upon Nurse RedHeart, the down-on-her-luck nursing student Trixie, the rest of the staff that are pretty much all the guises of their resident whimsical changeling Nurse Change'A' Heart, the clinic's little bat filly mascot Moonlight Sonata and their messenger phoenix Peewee.

Well, mostly normal, at least until Night Shift gets a taste of Doc's blood.

Pilot Chapter - Ultrasonic Lullaby - A patient very much with foal arrives late at night in a state of panic. She had not felt her foal move or kick the entire day. With the nearest human ultrasound machine all the way in Canterlot General Hospital, Night Shift volunteers to provide the next best thing.
