1000 years ago Luna did indeed crush King Sombra...With a breakup of epic proportions. As poor Sombra wallowed in despair and ice cream, the Crystal Heart ran out of much-needed Love energy and failed. The Crystal Empire withered and froze over. Losing faith in their Emperor, its citizens left in droves. Meanwhile, a jealous Celestia banished Luna to the moon and took Equestria for herself, proclaiming herself the Solar Tyrant, Sunflare Eclipse. There's the whole Nightmare-Moon cover-up, but we all know that bit.

Now, 1000 years later, a particularly impetuous but faithful student, Sunset Shimmer, decides to embark on a journey to jailbreak her mentor's ex-marefriend from the moon. With Luna suddenly loose in the middle of Sunflare Eclipses' summer sun celebration in Ponyville, the Solar Tyrant opts to simply rainbow-harmony-nuke the town and its surroundings. With just moments before the land would be turned into a sunburnt crater, Luna finds herself with an entire town to evacuate and a rather distressing shortage of sun block.
