In Our World - Kindness
Chapter 2: Figuring her out
Previous Chapter Next ChapterI cut the bikes engine as I neared the building where I lived and free-wheeled down the empty road and into the small car park at the back of my building. Fluttershy was still gripping me tightly, obviously afraid from the trip, despite me staying in the slow lane on the motorway.
"You okay back there Fluttershy?" I asked as I put my foot down to stop the bike. I looked back and she shook her head. "Well, we're here now. Let's see if we can find your, Ponyville."
Fluttershy stood up and climbed off the bike and I followed suit. I helped her take the jacket and helmet off because her hands were shaking, before wheeling my bike to the garage around the back of the building. After I pulled down the door I led Fluttershy towards the back door, taking off my rucksack and carrying it in my hand by the strap. As I approached the door, it opened and one of the older tenants stepped out.
"Oh, hello Jamie." she said to me in her doddery old voice.
"Hello Miss Mayley. Off to the shops?" I asked.
"Yes dear. I see you've got your rucksack. Just been drawing?"
"Yes Miss Mayley. Sorry, can't talk, I have to help… Fluttershy, here." I stepped to the side so Miss Mayley could see her, cowering behind hair. I was still curious about her name.
"Oh, hello dearie. Fluttershy, I'm sure I recognize that name. I believe my granddaughter mentioned it once." Miss Mayley said to her.
"H-hello." Fluttershy said.
Miss Mayley cupped a hand to her ear. "Pardon? You'll have to forgive, me hearings going in me old age."
I stepped forward. "She said hello. Sorry, we really have to go." as much as I enjoyed these chats to her, they got tedious after too long.
"Alrighty then. Say hello to Jasmine for me." Miss Mayley walked away, around the side of the building. I walked through the door she had left open for me, Fluttershy following. I closed and locked the door behind her, and she spoke up.
"Who was that?" she asked quietly.
"Miss Mayley. She's the oldest person living here, and I exchange a few words with her."
"Oh." Fluttershy said quietly.
I made my way up the stairs to the fourth floor (that's Ground floor, 1st, etc) and pulled the keys out of my pocket. I twisted the key, letting loose the lock, and opened the door with a flourish.
"My flat." I said grandly. It was wholly unnecessary. My flat was standard, if anything. A short hallway had a door on either side leading to the bathroom on the right and the kitchen on the left. Past those the hall led to the living room, which held a sofa, coffee table which currently held my laptop, some of my better drawings and a small flat screen TV with a Nintendo Wii. Another hallway led off to the right, giving way to three more doors, two leading to the bedroom and a closet and the last leading to the spare room, where my girlfriend and I kept random junk. I closed the door, locked it and dropped the keys on a table with a jangle. "Make yourself at home. Put the kettle on if you want, or maybe I could get something to eat?" I asked, walking into the living room and dumping my rucksack by the sofa.
"I-I'm ok, thanks. Actually, could I have a daisy sandwich, you know, if that's alright with you."
I stopped and looked back at as she tested the sofa. This was insane. It's like she really believes she was a pony. Or was a pony. This was ridiculous. Before I could help her get back to where ever she was from, I need to figure her out.
"Can I ask you a few questions?" I asked, sitting down on the sofa.
"Um, sure." she sat down nervously in an armchair. A second later she screamed as a bundle of black and white fur leaped towards her. A moment later she uncovered her eyes to discover my cat Mits curling up in her lap.
"Don't worry about Mits, she's harmless. She seems to like you, though." I said.
Fluttershy reached out and gently stroked Mits, making her purr. I smiled at the sight. It wasn't often Mits warmed up to a visitor.
"Ok Fluttershy," I said, flipping open the laptop. "Where did you say you came from?"
"Ponyville." she said quietly, stroking Mits.
"And you said you were a pony?" I asked.
"Yes." she nodded as Mits purred again.
"But that's crazy. People don't turn into ponies. And ponies don't turn into people either." I said as the laptop played the opening chirp.
"But, I was a pony. Then, suddenly, I was that forest, wearing these clothes, and I had these," she held up hands. "And those." she pointed to her feet.
"And I suppose you had hooves before?" I asked as I opened Chrome.
"Yes." she nodded.
I looked at her and raised an eyebrow. She must be deranged. Or high. Looking into her eyes, they weren't bloodshot, and she didn't show any of the other usual signs of drug induced fantasies. That must mean she's crazy. Or suffering from sort of amnesia.
I typed Ponyville into Google, expecting a map location. What I got surprised me, to say the least. According to this, Ponyville was a town of ponies, in a cartoon world. I looked back up at Fluttershy, then had a thought. I typed her name into Google Images and sure enough a picture of a pony came up. I held the screen up and compared the two Fluttershy's. They both had the long pink hair, cyan eyes and I had to admit the faces looked similar, if that was possible. I shook my head. It wasn't. I ran through different possibilities in my head; was it some sort of joke? No, what would she have to gain from it? Maybe she hit her head and actually believed she was this character. No, that just didn't seem right. I had no idea to approach this, so I asked her a question.
"Did you have a light yellow coat?" I asked. She looked up and nodded. "And wings?" I asked. She nodded again. I went back to the laptop. That didn't prove anything. It wasn't until I scrolled down slightly and saw a humanized picture of the pony in question. My eyes widened in shock and I'm fairly sure my eyebrows we're somewhere in the upper atmosphere. They looked completely identical, bar the cartoon feel of the picture.
I shook my head again. Someone must have just drawn it of her, right?
Whatever the reason, I have to get to the bottom of it. "Have you ever heard of My Little Pony: Friendship is magic?" I asked. She shook her head. I wondered why I even asked, of course she wouldn't have. Other than some sort of head trauma, the only logical reason for her thinking she was once a pony was insanity. Then again, if she was insane why was she in the middle of the forest? And she certainly wasn't acting insane. I stood up and walked over to her, but she flinched when I reached out towards her and looked even more scared.
"Can I check your head?" I asked, showing her my palms. After a second she nodded and I continued. The first thing I noticed was that her hair was incredibly soft, and smelt of the forest she had been sitting in. I massaged her head, feeling for any kind of lump or scratch. Nothing.
"Well, you haven't hit your head. Far as I can tell anyway…" I muttered and stepped back. She was rocking Mits in her arms.
"Why is she called Mits?" Fluttershy-I may as well call her that until I find out who she really is-asked and looked up at me.
"Jas, my girlfriend, wanted to call her Mittens, but I wouldn't let her, so we call her Mits." I laughed at the memory of choosing Mits as a kitten from the other adorable bundles of fluff.
Fluttershy pointed at a picture on the wall behind the sofa. "Is that her?"
I looked back at where she was pointing. It was picture of me and Jas.
"Yeah." In the picture my hair was blond, because I hadn't dyed it brown back then. The picture had been taken at a concert, about three months ago. I looked back at Fluttershy. She honestly didn't look crazy and there was something about her that just makes me want to believe that she really is this character from this cartoon show, make me believe…
Well, the impossible.
I was brought back to reality when Fluttershy yawned.
"Tired?" I asked. She nodded. I looked out the window and was surprised to see the sky darkening. It had been about 6 o'clock when I found her in the forest, and I guess I'd been looking online for longer than I thought. I looked at my laptop. Nearly 9 o'clock.
"Well… are you sure you live in Ponyville?" She nodded and I thought about it. She didn't have anywhere to go if she actually believed she lived in a fictional town. And if she believed that, I couldn't think of how she would react when I told her it was in a cartoon. Especially if she was tired. I decided to play along until morning. "Well…" I trailed off, not quite sure how to continue. "I can't get you to wherever you live, so I guess you can stay here if you want."
"Oh, I don't want to be a bother, I'm sure there's somewhere else I can go…" she trailed off.
"Do you know anyone around here?" I asked. She shook her head.
"Would you really let me stay here?" she asked. Even if I'd already said no, I wouldn't have been able to say no again.
"Sure. You can have the bed, I'll take the couch. Just give me a minute to clean up the room a little." I said before making my way towards my room. I picked up any clothes scattered on the floor and a couple of pieces of rubbish then made my way back to the living room, dumping the rubbish in the bin en-route. When I stepped up to Fluttershy I noticed she was asleep, her chest rising and falling peacefully. I lured Mits out of her lap and carefully picked Fluttershy up, careful not to wake her. I needn't have worried; she was dead to the world. I carried her fireman style into my room and lifted up the duvet before laying her down fully dressed and pulling the duvet over her. She shifted in her sleep and smiled.
My heart nearly exploded a second time.
I stepped out and closed the door gently, making sure not to wake her.
