In Our World - Kindness
Chapter 10: Attempted Art
Previous Chapter Next ChapterWith a nod from Fluttershy, I stood up and walked over to my easel in the corner of the room. For the past few weeks it had just been sitting there collecting dust, but now I would have a chance to use it for the first time since I'd wanted to draw anything. I picked it up and carried it over. setting it down next to the TV. I undid the latch and the three legs popped open. I looked around, trying to remember where I'd left my art pencils.
"Thanks again for letting me draw you Fluttershy." I said as I spotted the metal case behind me on the TV stand. "I really need this money, I'm down to my last few quid, and I can't find inspiration in just anything." I picked up the pencil case and put it on the easels tray.
"Quid?" Fluttershy questioned.
"Sorry, it's a nickname for the money here. Well, in England anyway." I walked into the kitchen to grab one of the barstools while I tried to think of where I had last left a stack of good quality A3 paper. I was about to walk into the spare room to look for some, but remembered it was Fluttershy's temporary bedroom. I leant around the corner so I could see her.
"Can I go in?" I asked, pointing to the room's door.
"Of course." she smiled back at me.
"Thanks Shy." I asked, trying out the nickname. "Is it alright if I call you that?"
She nodded, still beaming. I smiled back and turned to what was now her room. I opened the door and saw it was pretty much as it had been the night before, except for the clothes Fluttershy had worn yesterday neatly folded and piled up on a box at the end of the bed. It was nice that she was neat if she was going to be a tenant here. I saw the corner of the paper sticking out from under a box.
"Uh oh." I muttered to myself. If the paper was bent then I wouldn't be able to use it. I went over and lifted the box off to get a good look. Well, it looked alright. I picked up the wad and dusted it off. Fine. Well, except for the top dozen or so sheets, but there were plenty more under that. I took half a dozen sheets and went back to Fluttershy in the living room.
She glanced up at me as I walked in.
"Alright, I'm ready to draw." I told her as I sat down on the barstool behind the easel.
"What do I do?" she asked as I pinned the paper to the easel board.
"Just sit there and I can draw you. You should probably get comfortable though, it'll probably take about an hour." I warned her.
"Okay." she smiled. Mits strode in from my bedroom and jumped onto the back of the sofa. I didn't recall seeing her leave, but she hadn't really been the same since she'd seen that ninja cat video on YouTube. She jumped down and nuzzled her way under Fluttershy's arm, purring happily.
I smiled. That would be a nice addition to the picture; she would help show off Fluttershy's personality and love of animals. I stopped myself before I started, though. Fluttershy was still in her – or Jas' – pyjamas. It would be better if she wore the clothes I'd found her in – they showed off her character better than I could in any drawing. I'd washed them and left them on the bathroom radiator to dry. They hadn't had labels of any kind, so I presumed they would be machine washable.
"Fluttershy, do you want to change into your clothes?" I asked.
"Um, okay." she nodded.
"Alright. The ones I found you in are in the bathroom, on the radiator. I'll leave you to get changed."
She nodded, stood up and walked into the bathroom. The door closed behind her and I heard the familiar click of the lock.
While I waited for her, Mits pawed her way over and sat on my foot, her trademark sign she wanted food. I stood up and tried to dislodge the ball of fur, but she simply wrapped her paws around my leg.
"If you insist." I muttered to no-one in particular. It wasn't the first time Mits did this, and it was too cute for me to mind much anyway. I swung open the cupboard door and grabbed the second to last can of cat food and the tin opener. I sighed when I remember it was a pull-tab can. I put the can opener back, cracked open the can and poured the food into Mits' bowl. While I was at it I thought I might as well changer her water. When I turned around, Mits' was sitting and pawing at her food. She looked up at me and meowed.
"Mits, why must thou be so picky?" I asked as I replaced the water.
The bathroom door clicked open and Fluttershy stepped out, fully changed. Her sweater was a little crinkled, and for some reason it annoyed me. Probably my OCD.
"Hello Fluttershy. Looking dazzling I see." I commented as I stepped up and pulled her sweater straight for her.
"Thank you." she murmured. She peered around me at Mits. "Come on kitty. Don't you want any food? You'll be hungry later if you don't." she pointed out. Mits meowed once then tucked into her food.
I looked from Fluttershy to Mits then back. "Wait, how…?" Closing my eyes, I held up my hands in defeat. "Shall we?" I asked, gesturing towards the doorway to the Living room.
She nodded, smiling. She walked in and sat down on the sofa in the same place she had before.
"Do you want to sit on the armchair?" I offered. It would certainly be more comfortable than the sofa for about an hour.
Fluttershy nodded and changed her seating. Mits prowled in and jumped onto the arm rest next to her. She crawled under Fluttershy's arm again and curled up in her lap.
"She knows I'm about to draw." I explained. "And she's a bit of an attention hog."
Fluttershy smiled. I picked up a pencil and drew a few little circles on a spare sheet to test it out. Deciding it was working just fine, I started on what I prayed would be a presentable piece of artwork that would win me some money. Well, the agnostic version of a prayer anyway.
After about ten minutes I'd drawn a basic outline of her and Mits, but when I looked up again I saw her starting to fidget.
"Something wrong?" I asked.
She looked thoughtful for a few seconds. "Well, you've been so kind to me, and I hardly know anything about you."
I kept drawing impassively as I pondered this. "So, you want to know more about me?" I asked just to be sure that's what she meant. She nodded quickly and I responded with a shrug. "Well, if you want I suppose, though it's not much of a story." I cautioned. I thought about where to start. I hadn't really poured my heart out to anyone before.
"Well, I was born in St Elizabeth's hospital and grew up near London with my mum and dad, I went to primary school, had some good friends, standard deal. It was alright living in the city, until we got burgled."
"You were burgled?" Fluttershy gasped.
"Yep. Bugger stole my Gameboy, but not much else. Scary as hell though. Anyway, we didn't like it, but we couldn't afford to move out somewhere else, so we just had to lump it. When I finished school a couple of years later, I moved up here to go to the University of Lincoln to study an art degree. That was where I met Steven, as well as about half a dozen of my other friends. I guess you'll meet some of them at the party tomorrow. Anyway, I finished with an A*, though nothing worth mentioning in anything else, and since then I've been drawing casually and trying to sell some of my art. This is the first time I've gotten a bite though."
Fluttershy contemplated this for several minutes. Then she asked me a question that made me falter in my drawing of her.
"How did you meet Jas?" she asked. When she saw me cringe, she blushed. "Oh, I'm sorry, it's none of my business if you don't want to talk about her." Fluttershy apologized.
I sighed as I continued drawing. "No, I might as well tell you. I met Jas on a stag night, funnily enough."
"Stag night?" Fluttershy questioned.
"Yeah. When a couple get married here, the groom and his friends celebrate, as does the bride and her friends, but separately." I explained. "Tom, the guy getting married, decided to schedule an hour at the spa. That was where I met Jas, about five months ago. We got on well, so we went on a couple of dates. I took her to the concert in that picture there. It was taken by her friend Amy. Two months ago she moved in so we could share the rent. Then… this. I don't know where she is now, but it's going to be harder to pay rent without her to help."
I finished adding the touches to Fluttershy's legs and skirt. I'd add colour when it was done. I moved on to the detail of her butter yellow jumper around the outline of Mits. She was quiet for the next few minutes. "Maybe I could get a job?" she suggested uncertainly.
I smiled. "That's a kind offer Fluttershy, but you don't have to do that. Besides, I'm not sure you'd be able to."
She looked up at me. "Why not?" she asked.
"Well, for a start, getting a job in this economy is hard as it is, but because you didn't go through the educational system, you don't have any qualifications. No-one can hire you without them." I explained.
"Oh." she sighed sadly.
"Besides, I'm sure we'll have found out how to get you home before it will do any good anyway."
She went quiet again. "Do you really think I'll be able to get back?" she asked.
Ooh, difficult topic. I'd been thinking about that a little, to get my mind off of thoughts about Jas as much as anything else. This professor we'd found seemed to be on the right track, and he'd said that travel between dimensions was possible. I was drawing a picture of the living, breathing proof of that now. But he'd said it was by means of technology unknown to humans. That meant it must be something from Equestria. If he was even right.
"Well, we know it's possible to get you back." I reasoned. She seemed to accept this for now and went back to being quiet, luckily not asking for details I didn't know yet.
"Thank you again Jamie, for helping me and looking after me." she said after a moment.
I smiled at her thanks. "I'd like to think anyone would do it." I liked to, but honestly, I didn't think just anyone would be as… hospitable. Earth wasn't as nice a place as Equestria.
Fluttershy was pretty silent after that. Mits' chest rose and fell in her lap, having fallen asleep. At least now she probably wouldn't run off before I'd finished, like she normally did. Eventually I started to notice Fluttershy looking out the window, obviously a little bored. Wordlessly, I stood up and walked over to the laptop. She made to get up but I ushered her back down.
"No no, you stay there." I knelt down and woke the computer from its sleeping state. I got another episode of My Little Pony up for her, and simultaneously opened a playlist with the whole first season on it. I turned it fully towards her.
"I presume you want to watch some more?" I asked.
She nodded so I hit play and went back to my piece of so called art. So far I'd mostly done her and Mits' bodies. Now I was going to move onto the most difficult part; her head.
I sat in intense concentration. More often than not I'd given up on a picture or started again simply because I hadn't gotten the face right. And this piece was especially important being as it was the deciding factor in whether they wanted to buy my art. The sound of the TV episode helped a little, as was my odd way. Sound or quiet noise generally helped soothe me while I drew, as opposed to distracting me. Fluttershy was enthralled with the episode in front of her. Now, concentrate.
A convenient hour later…
I laid the pencil down on the easels tray, done. It had been an hour and since I'd set up the laptop for Fluttershy to watch, and the picture was done. Every last bit of detail about her had been copied down in graphite onto the paper in front of me. I was happy with the result, which wasn't something that happened often. Fluttershy was drawn and I'd added small details like shading and whatnot. Now I was just pondering over whether to colour it.
Fluttershy realised I was done so stood up and walked over. Mits had woken up and stalked off a while ago. "Can I look?" she asked, halting before she would be able to see it.
I nodded and turned the easel to face her. I dropped the colour question as I studied her face for any kind of reaction. There was little need seeing as her face lit up as she looked over it.
"It's wonderful Jamie!" she exclaimed, slightly reaching out for it.
"Thank you." I beamed at her praise, though she was probably just saying it. "I'm not sure whether to colour it or not. What do you think?" I asked. I looked back over the art, checking for any mistakes. I was always paranoid about that I'd left some in. Content there were none, I picked up the pencil again and signed my name in the bottom left corner, showing that it was in fact done.
"It's so life like." she breathed, tracing Mits with her finger.
"Thank you Fluttershy, but you don't need to keep saying so. Thank you for letting me draw you. Now, I think it's time for some lunch. What do you say?" I asked.
"Okay. What do you have in mind?" she asked me.
I thought for a few seconds. "Well, there's not much. I think I might be able to scrounge together a couple of pennies to get something from the chip shop." I offered.
"Chip shop?" Fluttershy asked.
"Yeah. I'll explain on the way, but I think you'll like their chips." I assured her.
"Alright. if you think so." she agreed.
"Okay. One second, I'll get my wallet and we can go." I smiled at her as I walked over to the coffee table by the door where I thought I left it. It wasn't there. Shrugging, I walked into my bedroom to check my jeans from the other day. I was sure I'd left it on the table by the door. I stopped riffling through my jeans as the realization hit me. I dropped the jeans and sat there, appalled.
"Oh that bitch!" I shouted, then covered my mouth with a hand as I realised who was in the other room. Fluttershy peered around the door, frowning curiously. "'Scuse my French." I apologized.
"Is something wrong?" she asked.
"Yeah. A certain someone stole my wallet."
Fluttershy's frown turned angry. I waved it off after a second. "No point getting in a fuss about it. She's gone now, and she doesn't know my debit card number. There wasn't much cash in there anyway." I said, rising to my feet. "She still pikeed about thirty-five quid, though." I muttered.
Fluttershy just stared at me oddly. I waved it off. "More local lingo." I explained. That was becoming a recurring problem. I supposed that as the show was American the language would be as well.
I pulled the bottom drawer on the dresser open and grabbed the tin where I kept my spare cash. Luckily Jas hadn't found it, so it was unscathed. I took a tenner, deciding that would be enough for a chip shop meal. I left the bedroom and ushered Fluttershy towards the door where I took down one of Jas's jackets and offered it to her. She took it and I helped her into it, and then threw mine on quickly.
"Are we going to go on your, bike?" Fluttershy asked, questioning both how we would get there and the name of my vehicle as she put on her wig.
"No, it's only around the corner. Besides, my biking license is in my wallet, and I'll get arrested if I'm pulled over without it. Are you okay to walk? I could get it and come back if you want." I offered, remembering her reaction to the walking from when I had taken her into town.
"No." she shook her head determinedly, her voice surprisingly confident. "I can manage."
I grinned. "Alright then. After you Madame Fluttershy." I opened the door with a click and held it open for her.
She giggled and walked under my arm; I soon followed, locking the door behind me.
