Chapter 1: Prologue

Prologue

My eyes dart back and forth as I peer through the scorched trees overlooking the war torn field, searching for what I hope is not there. In the distance you can hear the echos of war as the battle rages on. Suddenly the snap of a twig has my eyes peer to the left as I raise my side arm from my hip. “Come out and face me...” I whisper to myself, hoping that it was just a figment of my imagination.

A gray colt not half my age bursts through the veil of bushes with a rifle clenched tightly in his hooves, looking frantically from tree to tree. My heat stops as I realize, he was the same colt from all those years ago. “Drop your weapon!” I yell hoping to strike fear into my opponent. What have you done? You just revealed your location, this is war! You can't just be kind to the enemy like that. The colt spun around to face the voice, immediately recognizing it. “You!” he venomously exclaims. I could see the fire in his eyes as he raises his rifle at me, while the fear of death climbs into the poor colt's mind. I stare into his soul for what seems like centuries.

I couldn't do it, not after what I had already done. The colt yells, “You're going to pay for what you did to my family!” you can hear the tears as he yells at me, only feet away.

When suddenly a flash emerges from the barrel of his rifle. I can feel the round tear through me. The pain I feel was not from the bullet but of memories past. I feel the warmth of my blood leave me as if I am being drained of all life. I hit the ground as if I am dead weight cast to the side. He had done it; he finally avenged his family. The young colt ran over to check if he needed to relieve his magazine of another round. Nearly sobbing the colt cries, “Now you understand my pain, you monster...” cut mid sentence a round flies over and finds it mark in the colts side, knocking him unconscious.

I look over to see my saving angel as my vision started to blur. “Captain! Are you there?” a distant voice screams. “Captain! Don't die on me here...” As the noise gets too blurred to understand, I see Ember, my sister, running towards my crippled body. She slides next to me, and before I knew what was happening she had picked me up and started pulling my broken body off somewhere. My vision starts to blacken until I can see no more.
