Chapter 1: The Assignment
“But I. . .” A voice rang out in the cold dark room, a Pegasus Lunar Royal Guard lay in the spotlight, the gaze of two very angry Alicorns scorned his skin, disappointment and anger ran across their face.
“No excuses, you fail have failed us for a second time, and endangered the life of my dearest sister, Princess Luna of the Night. I will not have faulty guards who lack discipline and pursue hunches and prey on innocent Ponies, what do you have to say for yourself Frost?” Princess Celestia’s voice was harsh and unforgiving when it came to matters that concerned her sister. She almost looked threatening in this pose, her large majestic white wings outstretched, her horn providing a faint glow that dimly lit both thrones and the area just below the large staircase up to the platform on which both thrones lay.
“Your heighness, I may have been working off of a hunch, but in all due respect, that hunch was correct, and Talos did send raiders after Luna. Again, I sincerely apologize for collateral damage, but I do distinctly remember you telling me to protect her life at all costs, even if that meant having her get a little roughed up.”
Frost could still feel the glare of the Alicorn upon him, and his dark grey coat and light dusky grey mane did nothing to help hide from the gaze. Frost had been recruited into the Pegasus Royal Guard at age 18, having been a personal guest at the castle after he had been saved by Luna when he was just a homeless colt, wondering the streets of Canterlot. He had previously been under scrutiny from the royal sisters after pursuing a lead that was a rumored coup to overthrow both of the princesses, this of course turned out to be a false lead, and was nothing more than a surprise party for the one year anniversary of Princess Luna’s return from exile on the moon, but it still scared most of the planners out of actually attending the party; Pinky Pie managed to still attend though.
“I have a broken wing because of you, and while I’m grateful my life is still intact, it does nothing to help heal the shock of you tackling and disabling two griffin assassin’s in broad daylight, those Ponies might never be the same because of it,” Princess Luna seemed to speak with an air of both harshness and understanding at the motives, but was none the less disappointed in its execution. “You were trained better than this, you were supposed to deal with the threat discreetly and in a covert manner, instead you beat a griffin to death and caused the other one to fly away with a broken talon.”
“And now,” Celestia interrupted, “We are on the verge of war with the Griffin Empire, I need to send an emissary to see Talos in Gryphus to do some damage control on the situation, increase security for Canterlot, I mean did you even consider the repercussions of your actions Frost?”
The Pegasus just hung his head low, he knew his actions were brash and irrational, though the motives were clear.
“Luna, would you excuse us?” Celestia asked, Luna obliged and walked off to her room to rest up. “Frost, follow me.”
This was it, getting fired, exile, execution, life in prison, they all seemed like bad options to Frost, and he didn’t know what to think. He reluctantly followed Celestia down a large hallway, deciding to take in the stunning architecture as he walked toward his impending doom. It was the hallway to the armory, was she trying to grab a weapon from the armory? Frost knew Celestia could magically bind his wings and bring him down with a magically levitated sword with ease, it would be discrete, simple; Frost was walking to his own death, he felt it.
The two of them took an abrupt turn before every reaching the large locked gates of the Canterlot Armory, and headed down a much less grand hall of which Frost had never been down before. This new sudden change in direction momentarily disoriented Frost, he quickly ran through his mind the various possible situations and escape routes in the area. No windows, only one door at the end of the hallway, Celestia would easily have him restrained if he flew the other way. No way out, Frost knew it.
“We’re almost there,” Celestia broke the eerie silence, she could sense that he was nervous, “Calm down, I’m not going to harm you in anyway, in fact, for your valiant effort and dedication to saving my sister’s life, I am going to reward you.” She smirked.
Okay, now Frost knew something was up. “What do you mean reward? Just a few moments ago you were grilling me in front of your Luna for harming her while, by the way, I was saving her life!” Frost grew tired of these psychological games that Celestia loves playing, he wanted straight forward answers for once.
“Straight forward? Now Frost if I only gave you straight forward answers what kind of Assassin trainer would I be, I need you to think like one if you’re going to be this quote-unquote ‘Ambassador’ to the Griffin King Talos, he must pay for the crimes he had committed, and I’m growing tired of diplomatic ‘solutions’ with the Griffins, we have enough issues keeping peace with the Outer Kingdoms to worry about internal conflicts.”
Frost forgot about her mind reading abilities, he not even sure why he wastes the energy talking around her.
“I’m not sure either,” Celestia commented.
“I guess I’m just more used to talking because I’m normally around, well, normal ponies, no offense.”
“None taken,” she paused at the door, it seemed to be lacking both a lock and handle, it baffled Frost who would construct such a door, what could possible lay behind it, and how did Celestia plan to open it?
“This here is the war room; it’s been out of use for over 120 years, and houses Equestrian military tactics and strategies, as such it is locked by a door that may only be opened using my personal magical signature.”
“Okay, I got that, but the question is, why have you brought me here? And what is this reward you we’re talking about?”
“Oh of course, I must have overlooked explaining this entire ordeal, or I might have just thought it in my head, sometime I forget if I’m talking to my sister or not. You are here to be reassigned to a special cover mission. Now I will be clear, what is said never leaves this room, and is of the most covert of matters. You are to use any and all resources at your disposal to eliminate Talos. But this is more than a simple assassination; I want you to separate him from his escorts and find out a motive for the plot. I trust you can accomplish this task normally?”
“Of course I can, but eliminating the Griffin King, that will take time, I hope you realize that.”
“For that reason I will grant you power overwhelming, temporary transformation to an Alicorn, and a good supply of weapons and armor, even a prototype firearm based on Griffin bandit design. You will be well equipped to deal with any and all threats that Talos has to throw at you.”
Frost nodded his head slowly, the words of his new mission echoed in his head, he almost forgot the part where he was to be mutated into an Alicorn, completely focusing on having been assigned to kill the leader of an entire nation.
“Come on,” Celestia interrupted his thoughts, “Let’s get you outfitted for this mission, you leave at midnight tonight, head north to the Graveyard of the Forgotten, an old friend I knew was buried there, it lies within the Forsaken Forest, it is in neutral territory, and as such will prevent any Griffin patrols from stopping you, just fly low and stay out of sight. Then when you separate Talos, end him.” Celestia spoke her ultimatum, she sentenced Talos to die by assassin hooves, and by such hooves Frost will follow his leader’s orders, to the letter.
Frost walked out of the armory, adorning a sleek reinforced black leather armor suit, equipped with a prototype GK-2 (Griffin Killer version 2) Repeating rifle and a single sleek machete style sword; both of which he swung and fired with his newfound horn that split his mane that adorned his forehead. His wingspan had been increased as a result of the transformation as well; they now contained an additional line of secondary feathers, the line which increased flight speed.
“How do I look?” He turned and asked his leader.
“Like someone I wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley.” Celestia smirked.
“Sounds good, I’ll leave in 0200 hours, may Celestia watch over my mission,” Frost spoke the ancient prayer soldiers used to say before heading off into battle.
“As touching as that prayer is, there is only so much support I can offer to you outside of my realm of control, I can keep communications with you through a long-range thought spell though. However, this is mainly up to you my prodigy, I must attend to an issue arising in nearby Ponyville tomorrow morning, so I must head off to bed and will not see your take off. You have all the magical knowledge of Starswirl the bearded, the wings of the most powerful Pegasus to have ever lived, and the mind of a trained warrior, make me proud Frost.”
Frost nodded slowly, taking in all that Celestia had told him. “I’ll do my best, see you in a while.”
“I trust you will, goodbye Frost, and good luck.”
Frost left the hallway and decided to take a quick stroll around the castle, he knew full well it may be the last time he sees it beautiful architecture and stunning stained glass windows. The guards gave him weary looks as he strolled around the castle grounds. While Celestia had informed the guards that there would be another Alicorn walking around the palace, it didn’t make them any less suspicious of Frost, though it seemed that no one recognized him from before when he was merely a Pegasus. It didn’t take long for the two hours to pass, and as the moon rose high into the sky, Frost walked out onto the balcony, the constellation that represented an Ursa Major hung above his head.
The Alicorn stretched out his wings and took to the skies. Frost flew in a mostly northward path, following the route laid out before him by Celestia. He had been informed that she would up at sunrise to help him with any logistical support on approaching the Griffin palace. As he flew north the Northern Equine Mountains gave way to the Forsaken Forest. Frost saw that an eerie fog hung over the lower layer of the forest, and seemed to call him inwards to it. He was able to brush it off for the most part, but it seemed to him odd that the forest would call to him.
The sun began to rise as he approached he approached the Graveyard of the Forgotten. A voice rang out in his head, a familiar one at that.
“Hello? Is this thing on? Frost can you hear me? It’s Celestia, come in Frost.”
Celestia? Is that you? Frost thought in his head, it was weird to think he was talking to a pony hundreds of miles away. Well, not really talking, but it was close enough for the stallion.
“Oh good, you can hear me, and don’t worry you get used to thinking to communicate long distance, I’m leaving for Ponyville in an hour, but I’ll still manage to keep contact with you; just stay on course and turn west at the Graveyard of the forgotten.”
Umm, Celestia, I feel as if the forest is calling to me, care to fill me in on anything?
“Well I’ve never heard of any Pegasus experiencing any sort of voices talking to them while flying overhead, I will fill you in on the history of the forest. Originally, the Forsaken Forest was known as the Everfall Forest, named such when Ponies cut down a section of the Everfree Forest to build Ponyville. Eventually after the first war with the Griffins 260 years ago, Equestria retreated its’ border from the forest, for it served no real purpose other than a buffer zone between us and the Griffins, the forests name was eventually changed when rumors that it was haunted with the ghosts of soldiers that had passed during the first war, not to mention basilisks, timberwolves, catoblepas, cockatrice, manticores, wyverns, and more. I even think there was a rumor a chimaera lives somewhere in the forest, but I’ll leave that for another day.”
Ok, Frost thought, but what about that line you said at the castle about an old friend being buried here?
“My dearest and closest Griffin friend, of which we named a day of the week after, Freya, was buried in that graveyard. She asked me personally to be buried in Equestria borders, while still remaining close to the Griffin capitol. She loved both nations equally so.”
Wait? Frost asked, you were friends with a Griffin? What gives? You’re sending me to kill their leader.
“This is different, Freya was the kindest Griffin to have ever lived, the majority of them are nothing more than savage war mongering creatures that have tried multiple times to kill me and my sister. Oh, I must go, the chariot has touched down in Ponyville, enough of a history lesson for now.”
The Graveyard
Frost heard a voice call out weakly from the forest. He paused and hovered in mid-air, and looked down below to find a break in the trees where a small ancient graveyard containing about 25 graves and a large tomb lay. He must be hallucinating things, he was sure of it.
Come, closer. The Graveyard, everything will become clear. The Graveyard.
Of all the stupid things to do, listening to a possible non-existent ghostly voice telling him to land in the mysterious and eerie fog that lay around the graveyard was probably near the top of the list, and Frost wasn’t about to fall for anything of that sort.
Come, The Graveyard, You must know, the truth.
Eh, what the hay? Frost thought, if it’s nothing than he can always take off later and make his way to his target later. He suddenly dived down toward the graveyard, eager to find out if this pursuit was for naught or would get him killed, hopefully it wasn’t the latter.
Landing adeptly on the ground, Frost took notice that the surrounding graves were ruined and for the most part unmarked. Only the tomb seemed to have any sort of symbol on it, a butterfly, super imposed on a custom mix of the Equestrian and Griffin flags. This must be the tomb of Freya, Frost thought to himself.
You have come, and now I will reveal.
There goes the voice again. Frost spun around looking for any sign of anything that could have made the noise, but the area was devoid of Pony or Griffin.
“Behind you young Alicorn.”
Frost jumped in the air a good few feet before landing back on the ground with a thud, turning around slowly to face his adversary. What he came face to face with was not as expected, for a spectral Griffin ghost lay in front of his snout.
“Who are you?”
“You already know who I am, reference a conversation you recently had with an old friend of mine.”
Frost thought for a second, before he finally placed his hoof on the identity of the specter. “Freya?”
“So she had told me about you, yes, I am Freya the Kind, I represent the spirit of Kindness.”
“Don’t you mean Element of Kindness?”
“No, for you see, there are seven wise spirits that once roamed this world, Sun, Moon, Knowledge, Honesty, Affability, Kindness, and Generosity. Celestia adapted most of them into what you know as the Elements of Harmony.”
“Okay, thanks for clearing that question up, now care to clear up why you called me down here?”
Freya looked dejected, if ghosts could look dejected that is. “There is more to this ‘mission’ than Celestia has led you to believe. For you see, King Talos the eighteenth, of the house Talos, is the distant descendent of my brother, King Talos the first. Which, in essence, means we are blood, thought distant. Celestia knows of this, and is not thinking of the repercussions of her brash actions, compassion must be shown over this situation.”
“Compassion? She sent me, an assassin, to kill your distant relative, what compassion can be shown in this situation?”
“I offer you this advice young Alicorn, for my time is short. Borders are merely an illusion, know that we are all living creatures on the inside, and never let anger control compassion.”
With that, the ghost of Freya fell into obscurity and eventually completely disappeared.
Goodluck Frost, save these nations from war, show a little kindness
“Thank you, Freya, I will not forget what you said.” Frost flared out his wings and prepared to take flight above the tree line. As he flew above the trees a voice rang out once again in his head.
“Frost? Are you there?” Celestia asked
I’m here Celestia, Frost thought back.
“I lost you there for a while, what happened? None of my communications got through to you.”
Frost wasn’t sure what to reply back with, so he decided to go straightforward and blunt. I talked with Freya, he thought.
“You did what? Freya has been dead for over 1500 years, did you walk by some noxious fumes in that forest or something?”
You know, even through thought I can tell when you’re lying, you know she is able to conjure her spirit don’t you? Frost asked back.
“Eh, I might have known a few things about allowing her to conjure her spirit into the physical realm for a time, was she the one calling to you?”
Indeed she was, she told me of her relation to King Talos XVIII, and that you must reconsider your actions or something along those lines.
“Yes well, Freya is only allowed to conjure her spirit as long as her blood line still walks the live world, but I had been thinking about how to keep her spirit alive, searching for a distant unnamed blood relative descendent would be the most obvious solution, but my search has come up with nothing.”
So, kill Talos or don’t kill Talos? Frost queried.
“Kill him, I’ll find a way to preserve Freya, but Talos must pay for his actions, no matter the cost.”
Very well Celestia, I will follow your instructions, Talos will die for his crimes, Frost thought back. By the way, what kind of spells do I know now?
“You should know an invisibility spell to help you sneak into the palace, I recommend using it as you come over the Gryphus mountains. I must attend to my court now. Good luck Frost.”
With that, Frost saw the Gryphus Mountains only a few minutes flight away.
