*A large drawn out sidewalk stretching as far as the eye can imagine, surrounded by large grey buildings, all meshing together into a bleak atmosphere of industry. Cars packing the streets for miles, horns and yells can be heard throughout the city, from angry drivers and pedestrians alike. The life in this city is gone. There are only husks of former people, quietly shambling throughout their daily lives, trying to avoid as much human contact as possible.*
"Where am I?"
I open my eyes to find.... nothing. I can't see my own hands in front of my face. In fact I can't even feel my hands. I start to panic. I am trying to do something, anything, but instead I see something. I see a white light. It starts as a small globe, slowly getting larger, longer, and wider until it covers everything. I hear a voice, and it’s a familiar and beautiful voice. It sounds like a woman’s voice, but more elegant, it’s comforting, somehow.
"Do not be alarmed, I am only here to give you a warning." A long silence follows. After what feels like a lifetime of nothing I hear it again. "Your life shall change, for the better, or for the worst. That is up to you to decide."
I try to gather my wits enough to ask one question. "What are you?”
The moment I say that, I am jolted up from what feels like a shock in my ears, as if being resurrected. I quickly fall off my bed and crawl into the corner of my room. I open my eyes, just to see my normal room. I blink my eyes a few times to try and get a hold of the situation. I let out a sigh, and said, "Oh, it was just a dream." I crawl over to my bedside table, slamming my fist into the alarm clock, shutting it off immediately.
I crack my neck a few times trying to wake up, and a large yawn comes from my mouth as if on cue. I stumble past the massive piles of dirty clothes scattered around my bedroom into my bathroom. I walk to the sink, twisting the knobs to turn on the cold water and I splash some in my face, trying to get myself awake. I look up into the small mirror above the sink, just to see my normal face. What a surprise. I'm not that ugly in my opinion, I have an average looking face, dark brown hair, cut fairly short, but still long enough to fall over my forehead slightly. Other than that my face is pretty clean, or at least as clean as I need it to be. I grab the towel near me and dry my face off, looking back into the mirror again, checking my mouth for anything that shouldn’t be there. Never know, I guess. After my routine check up I walk out of the bathroom, and into my closet. It takes me only about two seconds because my room is pretty small, just a bed, a bedside table, another set of drawers with a small TV on top, the doorway to the outside, the other door to my bathroom, and a small closet beside my bed.
I start looking through my closet, finding not too many clean things to wear. I find an olive green hoodie, the one I almost always wear. I grab that, and a white t-shirt with some design on it, I’m too tired to care right now. I've run out of clean things to search through, so I leave my closet looking around for anything else I would need. I find a pair of blue jeans; not too tight, but not too saggy, just the way I like them. Finally I grab my sneakers, nothing special really just white and black. I dress quickly, not really caring how neatly I wear things. I quickly check my pockets just in case of any lose change, I find my cell phone, my wallet with about 10 dollars inside. Wow, I’m Mr. Money bags alright. I also find an old ticket stub from a movie I saw over the weekend.
I try and remember what the movie was about. I think it was something about two idiots trying to solve some sort of high school drug ring. I think about what I did over the weekend, and it all came back to me, slowly, but surely. I wake up, drive out to the local mall, and buy a ticket to any random movie that I haven't seen yet; which at this point ends up being one I’ve already seen because I go there so often. I usually greet the staff, who has all come to know me by name. I go there so often, in fact, that I’ve become what they call a "preferred costumer." It’s not official but they give me plenty of discounts and such because I come there so often. It can bring a small smile to my face, knowing that people can be at least moderately friendly sometimes.
I go in and get my usual combo, a plain pretzel with nothing on it, a large cola, and a cup of nacho cheese, and as usual they give me the cheese for free which gets me slightly upbeat. As I walk down to my assigned theater I walk through the large red doors, and scan through the aisles, ultimately finding a trio of empty seats. Perfect. I don't like being near anyone when watching movies, even though I don't often have anyone to be with when watching these movies of habit. The movie starts, and everyone's voice come to a hush or a whisper. I just let out a yawn, dipping a piece of my pretzel into the luke warm cheese, and downing it with a gulp or two from my cola. As I watch the movie the plot goes as I expected, they find the drug ring, they fall in love, they are caught by the woman who they have fallen in love with, they reconcile, happy ever after blah, blah, blah.
I just roll my eyes as I watch the ending, the romance scene where the lovers kiss, it becomes too much and I just walk out of the theatre. As I walk out a few members of the staff wave a goodbye my way, I just give them a slight nod as I make my way outside. I leave the theatre and look over the edge of the mall's main plaza, watching people rushing back and forth, groups of people just chatting, even the mother of a small child yanking her stubborn kid's hand, her not wanting to leave. For some reason I just watch as the mother forcefully pulls the child away, meanwhile she is sobbing, saying that she didn't want something. I was utterly confused as I should have been. I didn't know this family or anything about them. Why was I even still watching?
As the mother and child pair started to leave the scene they were making with all of the crying the daughter was making, I looked away as I started losing interest. As I started to get up from my slouching position over the railing, I felt something hit me upside the head. It wasn't anything particularly heavy, just something small and annoying. I shook my head for a second, recovering from the random blow to the my skull, and I started to look around for what possibly could have hit me. I looked to my feet to find that projectile used to attack me, when I saw something very strange.
It looked to be some sort of small doll. It was grey with yellow hair. I picked it up for further inspection to find that it was something I never thought to be possible, a Derpy Hooves doll! Yes, I am a brony of epic proportions. I am a large fan of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, with my favorite pony being the fantastic Derpy Hooves (or Ditzy Doo, whichever you like). I had been following the show for a while, always looking for my favorite pony in the background of almost every episode. Don’t even get me started on the episode where she first spoke, that just made my heart flutter with joy! It takes a lot to make me happy and My Little Pony is definitely one of the top things that can bring me out of a bad mood.
I just looked at it for a moment, not knowing what to do with it. Should I leave it for the kid? Should I keep it? Did someone see me with it?
I couldn't think straight through my excitement, and I just put it in my pocket and quickly ran over to my car. I threw open the door, sat down, slammed it shut and just drove. Now I know how this sounds, he is making an awfully big deal over this doll, but being in this position, I had just found the closest thing in this world to my favorite character in the only thing that truly makes me happy, which just moments before I didn't even know existed. As I pulled up to the driveway I honestly can't describe how quickly I was able to get into the house, it was 10 seconds flat. The rest of the night I had stayed at my desktop, reading fan fictions as I would every night except looking to my side every few minutes, just to get a glance at the smiling, cross eyed, adorable face of my favorite thing in the world.
After that nice session of reminiscing I gathered my wits about me and I pulled out my cell phone to see what time it was.
"Shit!" I exclaimed. I quickly sprinted out of the house and into my car. It was eight o’clock, and only ten minutes before my classes started.
