Glissando - The start of something new

'Ugh, I don't want to get up yet... It's so nice and fuzzy and warm here in bed...'

Bon-bon stood over her unicorn friend as she watched her flip over and snuggle down into her blankets.

"Lyra."

'No Bon-bon, go away... I want five more minutes... Just let me enjoy something I'm good at, quiet.'

The earth pony sighed as her mint green friend pulled a pillow over her head.

'Here we go again...' thought Bon-bon as she leaned down and snatched the pillow up in her mouth, causing her musically inclined friend to pull the sheets over her head and give an un-amused kick.

"Lyra, get up. Act your age for Celestia's sake... It's almost noon."

Slowly the musician emerged from the depths of her covers, glaring at her best friend with an icy, dagger-like gaze through her frazzled bed-mane. The unicorn turned and glanced behind her at the notepad and quill from the night before. She yawned as the two objects were gently lifted in her magical aura and brought in front of her as she began to write.

Bon-bon shrugged the glare off with a roll of her eyes. Her gaze fell upon her friend's pride and joy: a golden lyre resting upon a stand across the room. Images and feelings from last night trickled back into the earth pony's mind, both were things she would have liked to reflect on were she not being poked incessantly by the unicorn's written reply.

"Yes Lyra, I see it. You can stop poking me now." Bon-bon retorted flatly as she turned her attention to the text.

It's also Friday, I have no plans. What is so stinking important, "Sugar rump"?

Now it was Bon-bon's turn to wield the gaze of icy daggers.

"Lyra, you know I hate being called stuff like that."

The notepad was swiftly pulled back as Lyra went to work. A few moments later the mint green pony handed the paper back with another yawn.

And you know I hate getting woken up, but you don't seem to pay much attention to that one simple request either.

Bon-bon looked up to see Lyra with a big snarky grin on her face. The earth pony shook her head dismissively and kept reading.

In any case, I'm up. What's so important that you got me up on a Friday where I had nothing scheduled?

"You got a letter in the mail," Bon-bon watched the mint green unicorn's ears perk, "it's from Twilight Sparkle."

And this was important enough to wake me up... why?

The blue and pink-maned mare smiled and silently laughed at how stubbornly difficult her best friend was in the morning.

"Well, where do you want me to start? First, you should be up anyway; it's a gorgeous day out and it wouldn't kill you to go enjoy a day as nice as this instead of sleeping in. Second, Twilight delivered it herself to the door. I don't know what you said to her, but she sounds eternally grateful. She said that she wanted to do something nice for you since you were so helpful to her yesterday."

Lyra stole a look back at her instrument with a wistful smile playing at the corners of her mouth as she recalled her talk with Twilight from yesterday. Bon-bon took note of it, but figured to ask about the smile later in favor of finishing her thought.

"Third, it's sealed with the royal mark of Princess Celestia herself." Lyra's eyes flew open in surprise as she threw her thoughts onto the page.

Well, what did it say?

"You're really slow when you wake up," chuckled the cream colored mare. "Aren't you?"

Sorry, I'm just a bit grumpy when I'm not able to wake up on my own. That and yesterday left me pretty drained.

"Well, with the way you're responding today, I can safely assume you have your spunk back. Anyway, as I was saying; the reason I woke you up was because I'm not the kind of mare to open somepony else's mail. Especially if it's endorsed by one of the princesses."

The mint colored musician shook her head apologetically as she set upon her notepad with her reply.

Alright, that's a pretty good reason. But for future reference, there's no need to be so abrupt with me you know.

"Point taken, I'll do my best to remember that," Bon-bon started. "But before I give this to you, just bear in mind that if this has one mention of the word 'Human' in it, I'm going to scream. It's bad enough that you're obsessed with them. The last thing that poor Twilight Sparkle needs is to get caught up in your fanaticism. Dealing with your obsession is bad enough; I don't need somepony else encouraging you." Bon-bon laughed.

Lyra blushed fiercely as she accepted the scroll from her friend and broke the seal.

'Human mythology is absolutely fascinating though! Especially this "sign-language" I keep reading about. I only wish that all my research didn't drive you insa-'

"Well, what does it say?" Interjected the earth pony as she unknowingly derailed Lyra's train of thought.

Lyra simply blinked in surprise as if being shaken from some sort of stupor, and looked down to the unfurled scroll:

Dear Lyra,

Enclosed in this letter I've brought you are two V.I.P. tickets to the next Grand Galloping Gala; one for you and one for a friend of your choosing (though I suspect I know who will be coming with you). Consider this a thank you gift for making me feel so much better after our 'conversation' yesterday.

In addition, I was able to hear your remarkable talent with your instrument. Upon remembering this, I asked my mentor to make arrangements to allow you to perform at the Gala if you so choose.

I wish there was more I could do to show my thanks, and I hope that you send me word of your decision as soon as possible!

Your loyal friend,
Twilight Sparkle

Bon-bon watched as Lyra dropped the scroll onto the bed-sheets and stared at the ceiling. Overtaken by her own curiosity, the earth pony quickly snatched up the note and rifled through the text.

She grinned and shook her best friend by the shoulders with her front hooves.

"Lyra! This is great! Remember all those years ago when you were sad about not getting your cutie mark? You kept telling me: 'I'm going to be a blank-flank forever!' and I kept telling you that you just needed the right opportunity? It's just like right now, you want all of Equestria to hear you? This is your chance!"

The mint colored unicorn grinned as she refocused her gaze from the ceiling to her friend. Everything that Bon-bon had said was completely true, opportunity was staring her in the face and all she had to do was reach out and take it.

Hastily Lyra's notepad and quill flew across the page as Bon-bon watched over the unicorn's shoulder.

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

Thank you for the tickets, I'm incredibly flattered that you would do something like this for somepony like me. Please tell Princess Celestia that I would be honored to perform at the Gala.
Bon-bon and I wouldn't pass this up in a million years.

Your grateful friend,

Lyra Heartstrings
