Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Betrayed. Furious. Mortified. Those were the feelings Sunset Shimmer was feeling right now.

The unicorn ran a hoof through her mane, silently sipping her black coffee. As depressed as she was feeling right now, she'd never miss a cup of coffee.

Even if Princess Celestia was going to kill her.

Hopefully, the Alicorn would take pity on her prized student and just throw her into the dungeons, if they still existed. Sunset never recalled seeing Celestia slaughter anypony, but there is always a first time, wasn't there...?

Sunset sneaked a look out of the local Ponyville cafe: Sugarcube Corner. The town she had been sent to was large, large enough to be called a city, but the small majority of ponies walking around threw the thought out of the window. According to her mentor, Sunset had been sent to Ponyville to prepare the Summer Sun celebration, an event which would apparently boost the unicorn's leadership skills, but Sunset wasn't convinced that the mission wasn't a punishment. Ponyville was a fairly attractive town, what with it's clear sky's and warm atmosphere, but the population of the place was laughably small. Sunset sighed. She would have been fine with this if she had been sent to Manehatten. Fillydelphia. Trottingham. Anywhere else. But no. Princess Celestia had forced her to help out the most uncouth town in history; 'Mudville,' as Sunset called it.

And the worst part of it? Sunset was pretty sure the celebration would be a disaster, resulting in punishment. It would be a bad reputation for the unicorn, having a punishment because she had failed to complete her first punishment. Celestia was a tolerant ruler, but considering the fuss Sunset had created beforehoof, it wouldn't be surprising to know that the unicorn would 'mysteriously disappeared' in the future.

Sighing, Sunset put down her cup of coffee and withdrew a parchment from her saddlebags, holding it aloft with her turquoise telekinesis. She took up her mug again to sip from it, but found no liquid dripping into her mouth. She had drank all of it. The unicorn let out a groan. Why was her life so terrible?

Sunset didn't have a long time to sulk, though; a pink earth pony with a poofy mane had come to offer her more coffee. Three balloons adorned her flank.

"Would you like more coffee, Miss-" The earth pony looked at Sunset with a similar expression a filly would use after finally solving a difficult Algebra question.

"Sunset," The unicorn butted in helpfully, "Sunset Shimmer."

The other pony let out a long gasp and fled, a pink blur streaking behind her. Sunset stared after the hyperactive pony, an offended look on her face.

"Well," Sunset said to nopony in particular, her voice heavy with sarcasm, "That was a polite pony."

She looked around, seeing the looks fellow ponies were giving her, "What?" Sunset snapped. The ponies immediately went back to their own buisness, a few of them whispering excitedly to eachother.

Sunset, left to her own devices, scanned the list she had long forgotten about. She had quite a few places to go and check on. Princess Celestia had additionally put a note at the bottom in brackets: 'Remember to make friends!' The unicorn resisted the urge to smack her head hard on the table. Of course. Celestia wouldn't just forget what she had tasked her student with. Apparently, making friends was more important than celebrating an event that would only take place once in a life time. Sunset vaguely wondered why she had agreed to be the Princess' student. Celestia seemed to have mental problems.

'Have you ever considered the fact that you might be the mental one?' Her mind asked.

'Shut up, brain.' Sunset snapped.

'You're only trying to avoid the truth.'

'Go and flush your head down the toilet.'

Now, Sunset was actually pondering over the fact that she might have problems. Fair enough, she had talked to herself, let alone had a conversation with her brain. That pink pony who had run off; the unicorn was sure that she had scared her away.

'A wonderful way to make friends.' Her brain spoke.

"Shut up!" Sunset banged her hoof against her forehead, as if trying to slap her brain. She was about to repeat the movement, but caught the glances of the Ponyville citizens. She blushed. Twice she had humilated herself. "Focus, Sunset."
