Dreaming in Peace
Chapter 1
I looked around the dimly lit pub at the three remaining tables and the two booths, the faded red leather of the booths chipping and drying out from misuse. The dim lights of the pub hung over the seats and swung in the open air from the door. She was a medium sized gray pony with eyes as blue, reminiscent of an ocean, and hair that was a dark jet sort of black, the kind you saw on the blackest cloudless nights; however, she had no aura of malice about her. It was a curious thing, really.
Walking up to the bar, she sat down and looked for… another bartender I suppose. I struck up a conversation. “Er… Hello. What’s your name? I couldn’t help notice… That… You’re, erm….” I didn’t know where I was going with this. It was a stupid, and I simply tripped over my tongue more than I got anything across. Out of some sense of pity for the socially awkward fool that was myself, she chanced a response.
“My name is Monochrome, why?” I jumped to attention in some sort of jerk reaction, and nearly yelled. “Silver! S-Silver Whisp, I mean. Silver Whisp.”
I sat there with a dumbfounded expression on my face, not expecting to make it this far. She laughed a bit at my complete silence. “Hey it’s all right. You’re one of the less nervous ponies I’ve met.” I tried to calm down; this was my chance to actually make an… acquaintance, if nothing else. “A-Ah, all right then… D-do you want some cider, it’s a special brew…” She furrowed an eyebrow. “Special huh? I didn’t come here for a disappointment. I’ll try some, then.” I let the mug fill up with the apple delicacy, and I set it down on the table, some of the foam frothing over the side of the drink. She looked from it to me and gulped it down eagerly with a thanks.
She set the wooden goblet down for a breath, looking impressed. “…Wow, this…. This is really good! I have to inquire about the ingredients.” I looked down, with an awkward smile. I would… I mean, I really would, but… Well, I mean…. It’s sort of a family secret, and, I… Well, I can trust you, right? It’s sort of the way it’s brewed, but most of it comes from the apples we use. I’ve only got one tree that makes the apples I need, it’s cross bred with an Sweet Apple Acres tree. We just let it go, it’s close enough to the Everfree that it can grow on it’s own. Some of the locals say that, well, that the cider’ll kill you for that or something, but it’s a load of crock.” Apparently, I struck a chord with her; I perked her interest and she shuffled closer to the bar. Really? I live near there. The large gray house on the outskirts of town, I see that tree all the time when I’m outside relaxing. I had no idea it was part Sweet Apple.” I looked at her and then realized “oh ya I think I saw you while I was picking apples out there once speaking of food I have a cupcake if you want it.”
I walked to the fridge and reached in and pulled out the rainbow coloured cupcake. “I don’t like cupcakes and Pinky Pie gave it to me so I couldn’t say no, so I was saving it for someone and well do you want it?” She looked at me for a moment and said “ummm, pinky gave it to you, oh what the hay ill take it” she looked at me for a moment still unsure and took a bite out of the colorful cupcake.
After that she made a sickly face and said “i-it doesn’t taste good, its kind of bad” she paused for a moment “I don’t fell very good” I gave her a worried look and I saw the distress in her eyes I walked her in to the main parlor of the pub where the cider keg and fire place were and sat her down on the couch her eyes all ready drooping. She said “thank you but I think ill b-”right then she passed out on the couch.
My first response was panic like what was in the cupcake or why would pinky put anything in the cupcake in general, but then I realized if pinky put something in the cupcake she would be coming for me. But in this case monochrome, that’s when I herd the door of the pub fly open and then slam quickly shut. Pinky stomped in and shouted out “silver come here, I have a surprise for you”
immediately I looked at mono still passed out on the couch. I ran to the back room and griped the gun that I had hidden in the back room. In my hooves I aimed it at the door to the part of the pub pinky was in. That’s when I noticed that this gun was made for unicorns so I couldn’t fit my hooves in to the small trigger guard so I cocked my hand back and was ready to throw it.
Pinkie barged in with a gun of her own she was surprised to see me still awake, let alone about to throw a gun at her. She cocked her head and noticed mono on the couch "I see you gave the cupcake to your little friend on the couch, it wasn’t her time but it will have to do.” Just then I noticed she had the gun pointed at mono and was about to pull the trigger when I flicked my wings open and dove at her and knocked the gun out of her hands. But she fired, and hit the cider barrel witch spilled into the fire. which lit its way up to the keg, and blew up it lit the whole roof on fire.
I ran to the couch and pulled mono onto my back and ran to the cellar, hoping the fire would take pinkies mind off of us. It didn’t she ran to the cellar right behind us, so I put the steel rod in the door as a lock I bent down to mono who I laid down on the raw mattress. I whispered in to her ear “wake up monochrome were in trouble we need help pinky’s trying to get us and you need to wake up.”
At that moment I saw her eyes flick open, and the amazing pools of blue she mumbled for a few moments then came to her barrings and sat up and looking around, she said with a large yawn. “Wha-what happened the last thing I remember is eating that cupcake.” I looked at her and told her the whole story about pinky pie and the gun her eyes widened and her jaw nearly dislocated at the thought of pinky trying to kill us she said “ so pinky’s trying to kill us the pubs on fire.” I looked at her “yes so....we should prepai-” just then pinky broke the door open.
The fire showing behind her she griped the handle of a newly sharpened knife red hot from the fire. She threw it towards me it hit me in the knee the heat singing the fur around the wound, I fell to the ground clenching my knee cap mono tried to hit pinky but she got hit in the face and garbed by the mane. She garbed me by the back of my mane and dragged across the cellar being knocked out on the stairs by the punch she landed as I struggled as we ascended. Passing out only to wake up somewhere much worse.
