We'll Fly Together
Chapter 1: Fly Far, Fly High, The Sky Is Yours, Pinkie Pie
It was a sunny morning in Ponyville, but warmth of the sun’s rays failed to reach anyone there. Ponies milled about their daily lives with straight faces, seemingly absent minded to the wondrous world around them. No one smiled, and no one laughed. It was if all of the happiness and cheer had vanished from their hearts.

Rainbow Dash was sitting outside on the edge of her cloud house, gazing sadly into the vast blue sky. She looked down at the city of Ponyville beneath her. She could make out ponies walking along, their bodies hanging low as if they were being weighed down by their own emotions. She jumped into the air and began beating her wings. She circled her cloud home before taking off at a leisurely pace. She flew over the Ponyville library where Twilight was housed. She thought about how old that tree had to be. It’d probably seen many events, some good, and some tragic, but it was still standing strong to this day.
She then flew over to Sweet Apple Acres. The pegasus landed at the base of the hill on the outskirts of the farm. She walked slowly up the hill, watching the sun’s rays as they filtered through the leaves. When Rainbow Dash made it to the top, she turned back and looked out upon the apple farm. All of the apple trees, with their leaves a striking shade of green. The delicious apples were ripe and glinted like gems in the sunlight. She noticed how quiet it was. A serenity normally unseen on the Apple clan’s plantation. The sound of hooves colliding with bark was nowhere to be heard.
Rainbow Dash took flight towards the edge of the Everfree Forest. She noticed an absence of animals around Fluttershy’s cottage. She’d normally be outside making her rounds to nurture and care for her woodland friends, but she was nowhere to be seen. She reminisced about her visits to Fluttershy. The animals would be running around happily enjoying their lives, birds would sing and flit about the sky, ever grateful to their kind caretaker.
Rainbow Dash then flew over to Carousel Boutique. She saw that the sign on the door read “closed”. She thought of Rarity inside, busy as a bee, happily making fabulous fashion wear for clients near and far. Rainbow Dash put her ear to the door, but didn’t hear any kind of movement inside.
Rainbow Dash once again spread her wings and flew to a place had become one of her favorite spots to be. She landed outside of Sugarcube Corner. The lights were off and it was empty inside. She thought of all the parties that she had here. All of the good cheer that spread throughout her and her friends while eating sweets and playing party games. All of the late nights of music and dance. All of the laughter.
She then took off and flew towards the clearing near the base of her cloud house. She landed in the field a short ways away, feeling the cool grass beneath her hooves. The cyan mare walked along towards her cloud house and stopped a few meters from the underside. Rainbow Dash sat down and looked past her house to the air-filled ocean above. She trembled a bit as a few tears breached her violet eyes and fell to the ground. She steeled herself as she wiped her eyes, then looked back to the sky and spoke.
It’s all my fault; I’m the one to blame. I couldn’t save you, I feel so lame.
We survived everything, me and you: From manticores to Nightmare Moon.
And with our friends along for the ride, life just seemed like one big slide.
Now that you’re gone, we’re stuck in a rut; It’s like our happiness is all dried up.
Twilight’s retreated deep into her studies, and though she won’t admit it, she could use a buddy.
Fluttershy’s been crying more and more, just seeing her down like that makes my eyes sore.
Rarity’s holed up in Carousel Boutique. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen her, or heard her speak.
Applejack seems to be taking this in stride, but I know her sadness is hidden behind her stubborn pride.
It’s as though the whole town has fallen ill, but I’ll bring joy and sunshine back to Ponyville.
The Cakes are throwing a party in remembrance of you, and I’ll make it seem like you’re there too.
I’ll make lots of jokes and give big laughs, because although you’re gone, your time hasn’t passed.
Your sense of humor just couldn’t be beat, You brought laughter to us all, and that’s no small feat.
For that, we will always be in your debt, for you were the bravest pony we’d ever met.
So wherever the wind chooses to take me, a part of you will always be a part of me.
From Ponyville to Canterlot, to Las Pegasus and after, in my heart will always be the element of laughter.
Applejack will get better, you know she will. She’ll be back to bucking apples again from then until.
Fluttershy will recover, I’ll make sure of that. If Iron Will taught her anything, it was how to bounce back.
Twilight will get better, especially with Spike’s help. There’s no chill of sadness that a smile won’t melt.
Rarity’s shut herself in, she’s completely melodramatic. But with a smile and laugh she’ll be right back at it.
There’s one more thing I’m dealing with now; I could never tell you my true feelings, but how?
You were funny, sweet, erratic, and crazy. Your joyous nature never ceased to amaze me.
Even through the worst and darkest of times, your smile was that light that never failed to shine.
I wanted to show you the world, the seas, and the skies, even though I’m the only one that could fly.
I’d’ve flown with you on my back, through the warm skies so clear. It’s so cold up there now, without you here.
Tears are now streaming down my face, for you’re a friend who’ll never be replaced.
But I‘m wearing a smile like you’d want me to, because you always said to smile when you’re feeling blue.
So I’ll be brave from here on in; laughing often and making new friends.
And don’t you worry, your tradition isn’t dead, as I’ll throw great parties in your stead.
I’ll blaze through the skies spreading sunshine and laughter, all across the world and into the hereafter.
I’ll smile on with the rest of our friends, until the day my time here comes to an end.
Cross my heart, cupcake in my eye, I’ll fly through the heavens for you when I die.
And then one day when I’m no longer here, I’ll see that pink pony that I hold so dear.
We’ll see each other high up in the sky. And then together, forever, we can fly.
I’ll always love you, Pinkie Pie.
Rainbow Dash, having said her peace to her beloved friend, felt a smile grace her lips as the sun continued its ascent. She got to her hooves and began making her way back towards Ponyville. She had work to do. Ponies weren’t going to laugh and cheer by themselves. As she hopped, skipped, and jumped back into town she suddenly felt surprisingly warm, which made her smile grow even larger. She noticed the vibrant flowers that marked her path. She noticed the light from the sun brightening as she went. She noticed how light she now felt while hopping, as if she’d been freed of her invisible bonds by the strength of friendship. But she didn’t notice the pink pony hopping right beside her with a smile that matched her own.
