Chapter 2: The First Two Hours

Previous Chapter
The First Two Hours

Octavia set her case down and unhooked the latches. She masterfully ran her bow across the strings, a glorious sound that can only be compared to the music of angels. She played her warm-ups and looked across the room at the white mare. Vinyl was hunched over, digging through a box of various records and CDs. Vinyl Scratch pulled out a record that read

“Neightoven’s Classics as preformed by Octavia and the Canterlot Orchestra” She giggled “What a long name, it’s so… silly.” She giggled again.

“Well at least it tells my listeners what they’re buying. Unlike your new album ‘Reverb’!” Octavia spoke.

“Geez… I was just messin’ you.” Scratch sighed. She began to dig through the records again, and pulled out a blank record. She threw it in the air and it landed on the turn table. She opened her computer and plugged her mix table in. she opened a program and got to work on a beat.

“Tavi, which song should I start remixing?”

Octavia, who was busy working out a tune on her cello, said “I don’t care, I’m trying to work” her words carried a sharp tone that seemed to upset the upbeat pony.

“Oh… okay.” They went on like this for several minutes, making small talk and dismissing one another without care.

“Hey Tavi, check it!” Scratch said, flipping a series of switches. Her table came alive with a fury of red and turquoise lights, that shined brightly and flashed with the beat of the music.

Bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh bundunnuh

The bass vibrated through Octavia’s bones. Then the cello kicked in. It preformed a descending scale that moved with a note every two pulses. The techno beat kicked in as the scale sped up and transformed into a single Octavia recorded, except it had a remix effect that made the last beat jump. The muscles in Octavia’s neck moved unwillingly and her head went with the beat. The song lasted several minutes, but when it ended Vinyl had a huge grin plastered on her face.

“You like?” Scratch asked.

“Y…. yeah.. it’s… cool.” She said.

“Oh… cool?” she asked.

“Yeah, cool.”

“Just cool?”

“YES! WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?  PHAT? RADICAL? “

“Geez, Tavi!”

“WHAT?”

“You’re… scaring me.”

“Yeah? Well, you’re IRRITATING ME!”

Vinyl shut her eyes and adjusted her glasses.

“sorry tavi.” She whispered. She sat at her computer and began to click around.

An hour passed while the two worked. Guilt gnawed at Octavia’s heart as she recalled exploding at the mare.

“Tavi?” scratch broke the silence.

“Hmm?”

“Do you… hate me?”
