Chapter 1: A Mare In Need

A Mare In Need

Comment, fav, enjoy!:D

The sun was hidden behind clouds, leaving the opportunity for the cool wind to blow its ferocious and icy breath upon the peaceful town of Ponyville. The air was crisp and everypony’s cheeks were rosy. The tips of their noses were as cold as they could be. At least they felt alive, surrounded by quiet, and the wintry white that swathed all of Ponyville. It caused ponies to stop their usual habits and shelter themselves in whatever shop, house, or school nearby to survive the horrible winter.

Everything was quiet. Not a peep out in the cold; only the sound of a mare begging for her life to be saved from the beasts that chased her...

“Is that all you need, Twilight?” Spike asked, walking up the stairs. When he was halfway up the steps, he questioned Twilight once again,“You don’t need help putting up those books when you’re finished?”

“Thank you, Spike.” Twilight smiled. “But I think I got it from here.” She flipped the page as she read the book that lay next to her. “Take a break, you need it.”

“Are you sure? ‘Cause I can just quickly assist you when you finish your book--” He quickly waved his claw. “Like that.”

Twilight giggled. “I appreciate your offer, but I think I can handle it myself.”

“But I can--”

“Seriously Spike,” Twilight deadpanned. “I’m fine.” She waved a hoof. “Go ahead and do what dragons your age do.”

“Alright,” Spike conceded, and continued to walk up the stairs. “But don’t be crying to me when you’re surrounded by books!” he called out when he was out of sight.

“Will do.” Twilight mumbled as she paid Spike no mind. Her eyes were stuck on the book and what interesting facts it had hidden between its pages.

Flipping to the next page with the tip of her muzzle, Twilight pored over the words before her with increasing fervor. The violet glow of her horn intensified, the books floating around her flickering and fading away, one by one, as their forgotten existence was no longer sustainable.

“Almost,” she whispered through gritted teeth, shivering slightly as the magical tempest kicked up a cold, harsh wind. She couldn’t let that distract her, though. Not with this much loose magic at her horn tip. “Alm—”

BOOM!

Twilight shielded her eyes on instinct as a dazzling illumination erupted at the centre of the library. A gust of wind blew her mane back with its mighty strength. When the light died down, her attention to the book was shattered as her eyes were drawn to the figure that had appeared in front of her.

It was a unicorn with mixed colours in her mane, her coat was a pale white and her cutie mark was a musical note. Smouldering ashes were underneath her hooves; an obvious result of the blast. Her glasses were shattered, revealing her cerise eyes as she gazed at Twilight with confusion plastering her face. “W-W-where am I?” She turned attention to Twilight. “Who are you?” She shook her head as a painful sensation shocked her brain. “Why am I here?”

The confused mare’s head swivelled around the room as she gazed at the bookshelves and the neatly stacked books on them with awe. As she moved her hooves forward in an attempt to walk, she tripped and fell onto the wooden floor. Her face smacked against it, and her eyes slowly drooped down until they were completely shut.

“A-A-Are you okay?”Twilight stuttered. “Hello?” She sat still, her eyes stuck on the motionless mare. Who is this mare? What brought her here, and how? I’ll have to ask her when she wakes up. She nodded to herself and set aside her plan for later, but for now she needed to deal with this mare. Instantly her eyes widened. “Spike!” she shouted towards the stairs. “Come downstairs and help me with this body!”

“BODY?!” a gullible tone shouted from up the stairs. “THERE’S A BODY DOWNSTAIRS, IN THE LIBRARY?!”

Twilight rolled her eyes at the confused dragon. “SHE’S NOT DEAD!”

“Then what is she?! A zombie or… or a--”

“Spike, just come downstairs and help me, please!”

Spike’s frantic stomps were easily heard as the small purple drake quickly ran down the stairs. “No way!” his claws clutched the banister as he observed the motionless unicorn from the bottom of the stairs. “How did she get here? There’s like a blizzard going on out there!” he exclaimed. “There’s no way she could have made it here without passing out.”

“I don’t know, Spike.” Twilight turned toward the mare, then back to him. “Do you know her by any chance?”

Spike rubbed a claw on his chin in thought. “She does look familiar, but I don’t really remember ever seeing her. Did you try asking her?”

Twilight stared at Spike, clearly unamused. “Really?”

Spike chuckled. “I’ll take that as a ‘no’.” He continued to walk downstairs. “So, any plans, Twilight?”

Twilight nodded. “First, help me get her to the bed.”

Spike raised an eyebrow. “And then?”

Twilight smiled. “Then we do some research on this unicorn to find out how she got here and why.”

Spike groaned and face palmed. “I should’ve known it would involve doing research.”

“Well you know me.” Twilight smiled. “Everything can be solved by research, theories and the magic of friendship.”

Spike shrugged. “Whatever you say Twilight.” He planted his claws on the mare and began to drag her across the floor. “Whatever you say.”

“Hey be careful with her!” Twilight called out to him. ”She’s a living being you know… she’s not an object!”

“WHATEVER!”

Twilight groaned and stormed after them.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The pale unicorn groggily shook her head, she felt something cold touch her back. The vibrant sound of a heart monitor rang in her ears. “Where… where am I?” she coughed.

She tried lifting a hoof to her throbbing head, but it wouldn’t budge. She tilted her head up to notice her forelegs and hind legs spread across a metal table, secured with metal clamps. “What...the..?” Her heart started to race. “What the hay is going on here!?”

She waggled her hooves inside the clamp, expecting it to loosen the clamp’s grasp, but it remained locked and tight. “Let me out of here!” she shuddered as beads of sweat began to form on her forehead. “You’ll be sorry if you don’t!”

“Oh good.” A voice said behind the unicorn. “You’re awake.”

The mare twisted her head where she thought she heard the voice from. “What kind of sick twisted crap is this?!” she shouted.

“Please calm down, I’m only trying to help you, and I can’t do that if you aren’t listening.”

She scorned. “By putting me on Celestia-knows-what!” she yelled. “You’re probably some sick twisted freak who gets a kick out of this!”

“Please, just listen to--”

“BUCK YOU AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY!”

The voice sighed. “Alright, fine. If you’re not going to listen, can you at least answer this question? And please answer it truthfully.”

The unicorn remained silent.

“Do remember your name by any chance? Do you know who you are?”

“Of course I do.” She chuckled, “It’s...it’s...” her lips stammered, her mouth opened but then shut again. Her eyes widened, she shook her head and looked away from Twilight, then she softly muttered. “I don’t remember.”

The clamps on unicorn’s hooves seemed to have loosened, and she was able to freely move her hooves again. She clutched the edges of the table as she slowly heaved herself up to spot a purple unicorn positioned near a machine. “Where am I?”

Twilight smiled. “You’re in the Oak Tree Library in Ponyville.” she informed. “I live here with my dragon. He helps me out around here when I need him.”

Her eyes widened. “DRAGON?!” she shrieked. You live with a DRAGON! ARE YOU CRAZY?!

Twilight gigged. “Don’t worry, he’s harmless. And besides; he’s a baby dragon.”

She groaned and massaged her forehead to ease the pain she was now feeling. She leaped off the table and landed on all four hooves. She stumbled a little bit, but she kept her balance and began trotting towards Twilight. “How did I get here?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.” Twilight said. “You just teleported here asking a bunch of questions then you… just passed out.” she levitated a glass filled with water to the white unicorn. “You‘re sure you don’t remember anything at all? ”

The unicorn shook her head. “I don’t remember anything at all.” she sighed and took a sip of the water Twilight gave her. “I can’t remember who I am or how I got here.” she turned away from Twilight. “I’m clueless.”

“Hey, don’t say that.” Twilight trotted over to the mare and rested a hoof on her shoulder. “I’ll try my best to help you remember who you are and try to figure out how you got here.” she smiled. “But only if you let me.”

She smiled back then nodded. “Okay.”

“Alrighty!” Twilight exclaimed. “We’ll start tomorrow and see what we get from there, but for now,” she turned around and glanced at the clock that hung on the wall. “Let’s get some sleep.”

The unicorn chuckled. “Yeah, I am pretty tired right now.” she yawned. “Where should I sleep?”

“The couch in the living room should be suitable enough.” Twilight suggested. “For now, we need to call you something until we find out your real name.” Twilight tapped a hoof on her chin as she stood in thought. Her eyes eventually settled on the pale unicorn’s cutie mark. “What about… Musical Blue?”

The nameless unicorn shook her head. “Nah, that’s not cool enough. How about...” She tapped her chin. “Musical Beat!” she exclaimed with a smile. “It sounds hip and cool.”

Twilight raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

Musical Beat nodded.

Twilight rubbed her chin. “You really like that name? She frowned. “You sure you don't want it to be what I suggested?”

Musical Beat nodded again. “Yeah. I mean, if you don’t have a better name?”

“No, no.” Twilight smiled. “So, Musical Beat it is. I like it."

Twilight yawned. “We’ll stick with that name, but it's getting late, so we're going to sleep.” she trotted up the stairs, when she was half way up the steps, she swiftly turned head towards the mare and giggled. “Musical Beat...” She then continued to trot upstairs.

“Spike?” Twilight shuffled to the right side of her bed where Spike’s basket was.  “Spike, are you awake?”

“Hmmm?”

“I can’t shake this feeling I have.” Twilight stared at the ceiling . “I can’t help to feel I’m going to fail at trying to help Beat remember who she is.” She sighed. “But I couldn’t just leave her like that. I couldn’t say no.

“She trusted me to help her, and I’m not too sure I’ll succeed in the end.” Twilight shook her head and tapped the pillow beside her as a brilliant idea surfaced inside her head. “Aha!” she exclaimed. “I can give Beat her own personal journal to record her thoughts and feelings, then after that happens, I can see if she has any dreams about her past!”

“Go to sleep, Twilight.” Spike grumbled as he turned around from Twilight and jerked his blankets along with him. “Do your thinking and planning tomorrow. Some of us need to sleep, you know.”

Twilight giggled. “Sorry.” She pulled her blankets up to her chin. “Good night, Spike.” She whispered as she drifted off to sleep. “Sleep tight.” she muttered.

Silence was soon heavy within the room, but they were both in too deep a slumber to hear the sound of the front door shutting as a certain unicorn mare left the library.
