The pre battle of Ponyville

Shepard and company ran down the streets of Ponyville their weapons at the ready. A griffin jumped out of a shadow and Shepard shot it in the head without thinking sending it sprawling. To Shepard’s great surprise the citizens of Ponyville were not panicking, instead they were calmly staying inside their houses and when the occasional griffin tried to gain entry he would be sent flying from a buck to the face. Unfortunately the griffin army begin employed by Cerberus was huge; Shepard and his crew had already killed several dozen but more just showed up immediately to take their place.

“Shepard we need to head for Main Square, if we can fortify that position they’ll never take the town!” Twilight called to him as she sent streaks of fire out to scorch a group of griffins angling in from above. Shepard nodded and changed course towards the town’s central square. It took ten minutes of heavy fighting before they got there but what met their eyes was nothing like they’d been expecting. All sides of the main square were enclosed in a large metal wall, along which stood ponies who were armed with unexpectedly advanced weaponry.

“State your business or we will open fire!” yelled one of them before another smacked him on the head and called down

“Sorry he’s knew, we’re opening one of the smaller gates for you, when you get in look for General Lyra.” That sent Twilight reeling in confusion.

“General Lyra, when did Lyra become a General of anything?” Twilight asked confusedly “The only thing she ever does is talk about humans.” As they walked through the small door which was opened for them a strange sight greeted their eyes. The center of Ponyville had been transformed into a military camp with green tents, quanza huts and even a small firing range.“What…the…BUCK!” Twilight whispered to herself, she’d never seen this kind of thing in Canterlot let alone Ponyville. Out of the controlled chaos of the encampment strolled a mint colored unicorn wearing a military jacket and a small cap.

“Commander Shepard it’s a pleasure to meet you my name is General Lyra, but you can call me Lyra.” Said Lyra as she walked forward “As you can see Commander I have the center of Ponyville secured but besides that I don’t have enough experienced troops to gain any ground.”

“Lyra what the buck, when did you become ‘General Lyra’?” Twilight asked incredulously, Lyra smiled and replied.

“Before I came here to Ponyville I served several years in the royal guard and I graduated top of my class from West Hoof military academy, before going on to fight several successive campaigns against both the Zebras and the Griffins. You didn’t think that I was just a weird pony obsessed with humans did you?” The smile on her face as Twilight’s look of shock grew larger and larger.

“But, what, how, but…” Twilight trailed off, the day was already too crazy for her to worry about this. “Ok so what’s the plan General?” she asked after she was done hyperventilating.

“Well as I said we have this square secure but lack the pony power to push any farther, so I’ve devised a simple stratagem that should allow us to at least gain back a few more blocks and hold onto them before the Princess arrives with the might of the Royal Army behind her.” Shepard looked at her skeptically.

“And that would be?” he asked her raising an eyebrow.

“We send you and your group to secure the Cake’s shop and then I decide on another course of action once we’ve achieved that objective.” Lyra told him, Shepard sighed it wasn’t a very complex strategy, but it still better than anything that he’d thought of up till this point.

“Lyra I have a question.” Twilight said, Lyra nodded for her to continue “why is it that after all of the other disasters that have befallen Ponyville that this is the first time that you’ve done this?” Twilight asked

“Well honestly because it hasn’t been necessary up to this point, thanks to you and your friends my assistance hasn’t been needed.” Lyra answered easily causing Twilight to scowl “Besides I doubt that you would have taken my help in the first place, what with me being the idiot who drags her marefriend off into Everfree to look for humans.” Lyra favored her with an ironic smile.

“You played the entire town?” Twilight said in astonishment.

“No I really am obsessed with humans and finding a live one is my dream, I just have…let’s call them hidden depths.” Lyra replied with a small grin.

“Have you seen any of my friends?” Twilight asked her Lyra nodded “Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and Rarity are in your library and scouts sighted Apple Jack approaching from her farm with her family in tow. Luckily none of her cousins are in town I shudder to think about having to feed all of them.” Lyra said before she trotted away to see what Bon Bon needed.

“So Lyra is obsessed with humans…that’s interesting, wouldn’t you say Shepard?” Garrus asked him.

“Garrus remember our chat about drinking at the gates of heaven?”

“Yeah…”

“Well if you don’t kill that train of thought you’ll be there waiting for me a lot longer.” Shepard told him causing Garrus to laugh then Shepard turned serious and began to pace back and forth, all of his crew knew what was coming but Twilight was mystified. “We came here as guests and the ponies of this town offered us a new home and their hospitality without question. These griffins are here to kill them or cart them off to slavery for some dark and unknown purpose. I will not stand for it, these griffins believe that ponies are weak; these griffins think that we are weak, are we going to accept that? Buck no we aren’t, we’re going to personally see to it that the griffins remember this day as the day that Commander Ethan Shepard and his valiant crew repulsed their assault on Ponyville. When the few survivors talk about this day make sure that they have to look over their shoulders in fear that one of us has snuck up on them, now let’s get out there and kick some flank!” his crew and several of the surrounding ponies broke into wild cheers, Twilight turned to Tali and quietly whispered.

“Does he always make dramatic speeches?” Tali nodded silently while Dash tackled Twilight into a hug and Rarity and Fluttershy followed at arriving for the hug a few seconds later. “Are you girls ok?” Twilight asked them worriedly.

“We had a slight scuffle with a few of the brutes but nothing that Tom and I couldn’t take care of.” Rarity told Twilight and got a mystified look in response.

“How did Tom help?”

“He made a very convincing argument that crushed the griffins’ brains under its complexity.” Rarity replied.

“Actually she threw Tom on them, but I guess if she wants to say it like that it’s up to her.” Dash said. “So what’s our plan I heard cheering?”

“Our group is basically going to go out kill everything in sight and then hold out for reinforcements.” Dash nodded to herself.

“Sounds like a good plan to me!” Dash told her unclipping her rifle and walking over towards Shepard.

“Alright I want this clean and by the books, we go out, kill everything that looks like a griffin then we hold as much ground as we can and hold out for reinforcements, any questions?” Shepard told his group once they were assembled in front of him, nopony said anything so Shepard nodded and led them towards the exit which would be opened just long enough for his group to exit. As they stepped out they found the streets of Ponyville deathly quiet you could have heard a feather hit the ground. The clouds overhead seemed to be moving in odd unnatural movements and the wind blew through without a sound ruffling Shepard’s mane. The very air itself seems to be holding it’s breath waiting, and watching.

“Kind of makes you think that any second now a group of griffins are going to jump out of a side street doesn’t it Commander?” Said Garrus jovially completely ruining the atmosphere, Shepard chuckled.

“Alright ponies let’s move, watch out for snipers or griffins hiding out of sight.” Shepard told his group and they set of down the street with the streaks of the setting sun at their backs.
