The Elements of Freedom: The Shadow King's Fall
Chapter 7: General Lunarus Goldenchord
Previous Chapter Next ChapterNexus' eyes shot open instantly and he shot upright. He looked around only to find Discord hovering over him reading a book.
"You know, I'm starting to see why Twilight loves these things so much. They're so entertaining! Even with the lack of pictures."
"Would you get out of here?" Nexus said annoyed.
"Fine. I can take a hint. I know when I'm not wanted." Discord said tossing the book he was reading blindly in Nexus' direction before hovering out.
"Faust, that guy needs to just leave me alone. What the hay was he reading anyways?" Nexus said levitating the book around the stacks he had amassed. "Unsung Heroes of Equestria? What's so entertaining about this?" Nexus said aloud as he opened up to the index.
He would have tossed the book aside if one name hadn't caught his eye. Under the honorable mentions, he spotted a name he was all too familiar with. General Lunarus. True, Nexus was an expert on the Evening Armada, but he'd never been able to find much of anything on his ancestor. He didn't even know what he looked like. Nexus flipped to the page in question and nearly froze at what he saw.
A copy of an oil painting depicting a black alicorn in a suit of dark blue armor without a helmet. A small smile was on his muzzle as he stood next to Princess Luna who also had a smile on her face. The black alicorn's coat had the appearance of having a light, pearly sheen to it, not as noticeable at a glance but easily there when you looked at him. The name above the picture hit him harder than the golden treble cleft cutie mark on the black alicorn's flank.
General Lunarus Goldenchord of the Fallen Crystal Empire: Evening Armada Metal of Honor Recipient. Nexus couldn't hold back his thoughts. They raced as fast as his eyes across the description of his ancestor.
Little is known about General Lunarus Goldenchord other than he fought for Princess Luna during the Civil War. Most records from the war were destroyed by order but what survived is extraordinary. Theories abound that the legendary Elements of Harmony were not the only magical artifacts used in the war. Goldenchord was thought to hold artifacts that were as/if not more powerful. The main theory is that the metal he wore on his breast plate was the source of his power rather than his royal status.
It is unknown as to whether he was a relative to the Princess' but it was obvious that he had a close relationship to Princess Luna. He was said to never leave her side until necessary. Perhaps he was a little brother that loved his closest sister more than the eldest. Though not enough it would seem: In the records from Celestia, he came to her and warned her of the attack on the castle. Though he was a Metal of Honor recipient, he is their most infamous traitor. Goldenchord died fifteen years after the war leaving his wife and only daughter in Canterlot, the new residence of Princess Celestia.
Two paragraphs? That's all? A pony with such a great history has two paragraphs of information? What about what he did before the war? The Crystal Empire? Was that all fake; all from his imagination. Nexus sighed and leaned back into the chair he was sitting in. The entire thing suddenly lurched and started to topple. Nexus put his forelegs out to brace himself but the chair stopped at a forty-five degree angle.
Nexus looked down and saw a metal bar holding the chair's right front leg to the floor. A loud click followed the chair stopping and a mass amount of dust shook off of the shelves to his right. Two sections of the shelves pushed out and started in opposite directions. Nexus rolled out of the chair and watched the book shelves open wide enough for him to be able to spread his mechanized wings and still not touch either side of the cases.
He slowly approached the doorway that was created and peered in. He couldn't see out of the two stained glass windows at the back of the room, but he could see the gray, predawn light filtering in through the colored glass. One window was of a sun rise and the other of the middle of the night. On either side, two lounge sofa's, and two book shelves sat covered in dust. Red carpet went from wall to wall with a wooden podium sitting in the middle of it all.
A large brown book with two golden images of alicorns on its cover sat upon it. Nexus would've opened that first if something under the couch to his right hadn't caught his eye. A much smaller, leather bound book and a piece of parchment folded over it. Nexus levitated both out from under the couch and looked them over. The book was a blank, brown leather bound book the size of a user's manual. The parchment wasn't too much larger and was bound to it with twine.
Nexus untied the parchment from the book and read the note first. The top said For Princess Luna. Nexus wasn't one for invading privacy so he opened the front cover of the book first. Property of Lunarus Goldenchord Private Log, it read. Nexus wasn't sure if Discord was about to pop out of the cover or what, but he was certain this wasn't a dream. He flipped through the pages to make sure this wasn't some kind of prank. Paragraph upon paragraph of life passed by in a few seconds. As Nexus hit the last few pages, something wrapped in a black cloth bearing Goldenchord's cutie mark fell to the floor. Nexus wrapped that in a magical field and unraveled the cloth.
Under the black handkerchief a small metal, not much larger than a silver star lay in his hoof. The ribbon above the metal was black with a white stripe going down the middle. The metal hung from the ribbon by two small, short, golden chains. Nexus noticed what it was immediately. The metal wasn't technically metal; it was a smooth cut gem held in a golden frame that fit the gem perfectly. A cyan blue crescent moon sat with the prongs pointing up with a horn through the middle with a star on the tip. Two wings were spread wide from either side of the moon. It was Nexus' cutie mark, General Lunarus' Medal of Honor.
