The Elements of Freedom: The Shadow King's Fall
Chapter 42: Honor All Alone
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAs much as he tried to hide it, his little problem was still very visible. Under normal circumstances, even war time, Nexus would be heckling him to no end about it. But he felt far from normal. Nexus still felt the pull of darkness on his soul. The pull was so strong that he could drown in it. The power was intense, he could still feel it coercing through his veins. It scared him. He knew he was afraid of it but he wasn't sure if it was really fear or the power of the fear Sombra gave him.
He had to shake it off for now. Nexus opened the door and his "golden troops" walked in and shut it behind themselves quickly.
"Good to see you're up and Adam there Brand." Hestaria said holding back a giggle. Brand blushed and scowled at her, Nexus only glared in her direction. "Ha… So, what's the plan?"
"I was just about to ask the same thing."
"Easy, all of you get as many as you can off this ship and I blow the powder reserves. Simple." Nexus replied.
"He's right, I don't like it."
"You can't fight with that thing in your way." Nexus said trying to keep his eyes off of the distraction. "Besides, Sombra can't be killed. So I may as well knock him out for another few thousand years."
"Okay, either somepony's writing you wrong or you haven't paid attention to what's worked so far." Hestaria said.
"What is it with you and Discord mentioning a writer?"
"Whatever it is Stari's right. Alone, we've gotten our asses handed to us." Ephialtes butted in.
"United we stand." Knight added.
"Together we thrive." Thunder said cocking his rifle.
"I know. But as it is, I'll be dead when I get back. Better I die as a hero not a traitor."
"No matter what you say Captain, we're with you the whole way." Ephialtes said. "Through black and blue."
"Was that necessary?"
"It lightened the mood didn't it?"
"The point is we're staying with you as long as we have to."
"It's a dangerous job. Even if there's another plan, there's almost no chance of any of us getting a ride back."
"Danger's our specialty Nexus." Silver added. Autumn and Fixette are on the other ships, no way am I letting them go out without my say in the matter."
"And we're not letting you go out that way either Nex." Ephialtes said.
"Captain's go down with their ships." Brand said. "You take this down I'm going with it."
"No you're not. You're going to free your troops and drop the escape pods. They can't be on board when anything goes down. Even if there was another way to do this, this ship's going down, and you're not going to be on it. And seeing as you're a functional cripple for the next few hours, you don't have a say."
"But-" Brand's eyes glazed over suddenly and he shook it off quickly. "Ugh, you're right."
"Did…Did Firebrand say what I think he just said?" Knight asked.
"I did. He's right, I can't help you defeat Sombra. It has to be all of you."
"What'd you mean? I'm the only one strong enough to even beat him." Nexus said.
"From the reports your cosine wrote, he said you all complimented each other in combat to the point of it being near perfection. You six were destined to do great things, and this is that thing. Win or lose, you'll all go down in history as a symbol of what to fight for."
"I'm not following." Ephialtes said.
"Just do what you can, I'll start ejecting the pods." Firebrand started out the door walking kind of odd with his not so little impairment before turning to Nexus. "And Nexus, I think it's time for plan B." Firebrand quickly turned and started barking orders.
What was that all about? Plan B, what was that suppose to- Nexus quickly spun around and saw the safe in the back of the room behind an empty desk. How Brand knew that was beyond him, but he was right. It was time for him to end this, and they were his only option.
"Alright," Nexus said walking over to the safe and bucking the door in to the point where it could swing on its own hinges. In the back, the long wooden box that held the Elements in it sat untouched. "We're going to do this now. Keep a small distance behind me on the way out."
He opened the box and levitated out the five stone balls and Goldenchord's Metal of Honor. He pushed the door out and just as the others were about to follow, he slammed it shut and toppled a few supply crates in front of the door.
"What the! Nexus!" Ephialtes shouted from behind the door. "Don't you blow that powder!"
"I'm not, but what I'm about to do is just as stupid. When this is over, somepony on the other ships will get you out. I can't have you in my way of killing this bastard once and for all." Nexus said running for the nearest latter.
"Nexus! Don't do this! Whatever you're doing don't do it!" Hestaria shouted after him. But it was too late, he was already starting up the first flight of stairs.
Sombra was still looking over plans in his Firebrand form when there was a commotion on the top deck.
"Sombra!" Nexus shouted.
Sombra stared to the door and was greeted by it exploding in his face. Splinters tore into his flesh and threw him back. Nexus walked in and put up a field around the door so no changelings could enter. He still held the stone balls in his telekinetic grasp as Sombra started to recover.
"So, you have broken my spell?" Sombra said seeing Nexus' change in eye color.
"I've broken more than that." Nexus said taking a stance with his chest, and the Metal of Honor out.
"Hm, you also have a new set of toys. Let us see what they do."
"Gladly."
Nexus concentrated his spark to the metal. The stone spheres levitated themselves into a pentagon shape. The metal glowed along with the balls as electricity arced off of them all. With a powerful *CRACK-POW* followed by a low rumble that resonated for miles, Nexus unleashed the most powerful bolt of magically charged lightening he'd ever used. Everything went white as the bolt slammed into Sombra and turned him to dust while shattered the back section of the ship. Nexus fell to his knees and let the balls do the same. Fire sprang out from engine room behind him and smoke curled up out of the massive hold in the ship.
"That's it." Nexus said panting.
"Indeed. Is that it?" Sombra's voice said as the black smoke that was starting to trail behind the ship.
"No… It's impossible…"
"No, what's impossible is you believing you could harness the elements to be able to defeat me." Sombra said as his head reformed in the smoke. "I am far too powerful to even be rendered powerless by anything less than Faust herself. And she cannot help you."
"That was 1.21 gigawatts of pure power! There shouldn't even be a you left to reform!"
"I have absorbed all of the power in the amulet." He said as it reformed around his neck. "Now it's my turn."
The air around them suddenly got cold and moist. Nexus' ears started to pop as the pressure started to go down. They were going down. There were two loud low booms and everything suddenly everything became weightless. Sombra froze the balloons! They just burst!
"Now we see the resilience of the famed Golden Bloodline!"
Nexus thought faster than he would have thought possible, he held his breath and concentrated all of his magic to the metal. Everything around him glowed blue with a protective field as they plummeted. He only hopped he'd been able to put a field around the front hold. He opened his eyes and saw the balls floating in front of his eyes, or rather falling with him. They weren't strong enough. Nexus realized he couldn't hear anymore, then his ears popped and the roar of the wind slammed into his ear drums. His eyes snapped shut again just as he caught a glimpse of one of the balls glowing purple and mixing with his fields. Then, a loud crashing noise overtook everything else and then the world turned into the sound of running water as the blood rushed back to his limbs and ears.

Nexus: Why am I being so stupid! Vince!
Me: Hey, don't look at me. This is how you are at the moment.
Nexus: A suicidal moron that doesn't think his plans through fully? You need writing classes.
Me: It'll make sense later, I promise. And you're going to love the ending. Especially when you go back to Dust.
Nexus: Oh yeah, I forgot about her.
Me: Exactly.
Nexus: What?
Me: Nothing. I'm enjoying the hinting of the future.
