The story is about a pony named Midnight tales, the mayor of a small village named Evenbrook, which lays on the edge of founded Equestira. As with this position, they have been neglected by Princess Celestia, and have instead been raised under the moon of Princess Luna. As such, they have adapted to the darkness of night. This story is about the struggle of Midinght Tales, the village mayor to help Princess Luna, who had now become Nightmare Moon, to create an eternal night. He, along with other members of his village attempt to bring Celestia down, and take her power. Midnight tales traveled to Canterlot, disguised as a royal guard, in attempt to capture the Princesses' power. so that Nightmare Moon may create an endless night. However, as the story progresses, Midnight Tales becomes less and less sure if what he is doing is right. But his stubborn attitude lead him to eventually bring his village to ruin, under the fighting princesses. In the end, Midnight is left with nothing. His people dead, his home destroyed, and himself being cursed by Princess Celestia, he leads himself to a self imposed exile for the next one thousand years, where he slowly begins to deteriorate. The story ends one thousand years later, when Luna returns as a princess, free from Nightmare Moon. She returns to find Midnight, and give him a second chance at life. She wipes his memory, and returns him to a young colt. The end hints to Midnight becoming Twilight's new apprentice, this is to set up for a sequel.
