Chapter 1: Showing Off
All the fillies watched in amazement, while Scootaloo bragged to her friends about her role model, Rainbow Dash. As Scoot went through the list of why the older pegasus was so amazing, the small crowd of young unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies looked up lovingly at her sky blue body and scruffy rainbow hair, an occasional chorus of “Ooh!”s and “Ah!”s was all the amazed fillies could say.
“…Oh yeah! And she’s the fastest flyers in the whole of Equestria! She can clear the sky of clouds in ten seconds flat!”
At this statement, Rainbow’s ears perked up. She looked down at Scoot’s little pleading face. “Rainbow Daaaaash, because you’re my bestest friend, like, ever, can you show me and the girls a quick ten seconds of awesome?”
Dash hesitated. Scoot did this so often, and Dash wondered how she knew so many ponies that hadn’t watched her clear the skies.
But then, from behind her, she saw a glimpse of yellow flank and pink cutie mark. Turning her head, she saw Fluttershy. Her cute green-blue eyes were on Rainbow, watching, waiting. Rainbow looked at her, and she felt butterflies in her stomach. But she sighed, knowing that Fluttershy will never know how much she loved her.
Rainbow Dash thought for a second, and looked back down at Scootaloo, who was repeating the words “Pretty please” over and over and over again, which was slowly beginning to annoy Dash.
“Ten seconds? Are you kidding me?” Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Fluttershy’s puzzled look. The crowd of fillies had the same expression of their faces; Scoot’s being the most confused. Dash looked up at the sky. She thought she’d better show off while she crush was spectating. “I could do it in seven seconds!” In unison, everypony gasped, and all was silent.
She looked back at Fluttershy’s face, and was now confused herself; the yellow pegasus had a devious, almost evil look on her face.
The fillies cheered as she took off, eyes glued to the bolt of blue clearing the skies. And seven seconds later, as promised, the skies were clear, besides Rainbow Dash hovering above the crowd of fillies.
“There! What did I say? The fastest pegasus in all of Equestria!” She looked downwards, first at Scoot and her friends, and then behind her, to where Fluttershy was once stood. Where is she? Rainbow thought. That thought was swiftly interrupted by kidney shock followed by an adorable giggle.
When Dash had regained herself - feeling quite humiliated - she flew up to her trickster, who was trying to stop her laughter with a dainty hoof over her mouth. “I’m so sorry Rainbow, but, well, it was too hard to resist, with all that silly talk about being the fastest in Equestria and all…”
“WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!” Scootaloo had a look of rage in her eyes, hearing someone talk bad about her role model.
Fluttershy blushed, and flew closer to the furious orange filly, hovering close enough to talk to her, but far enough away to avoid Scoot hitting her, the filly jumping towards the sky and lashing out with her hooves. “I’m terribly sorry, but you’ve been lying to your friends here. I don’t want to brag, but Rainbow’s showing off reminded me of the true fastest pegasus. I’m just as fast, if not faster than Dash here…”
Fluttershy was cut short. “PROVE IT!!” Scootaloo demanded.
“Yeah, prove it.” Fluttershy looked up, and hovering above her, blocking out the sun, was the silhouette of her friend. Her face was enraged; Fluttershy knew how much Dash hated losing and being proved wrong. This was risky, what she was doing, she could lose a good friend due to this.
Fluttershy began to wonder why she had said anything at all…
