Elements of Torment
Chapter 1: Twilight’s Ascension
Finally done organizing my library after a long weekend of studying, Twilight thought to herself, if only Spike were still here. The thought of the day he flew off struck her: it had been over a year since she last saw that dragon. He had finally outgrown his home here in Ponyville and had to go find a cave fit for a dragon and his belongings. Twilight could only think about how she missed his cute little face and how he used to help around the library. She shook her head, BAGH, quit it, youre gonna start crying again!
The tears came anyways, it was only natural, she was pretty much a mother to him. Stop it Twilight, she thought. Twilight slammed herself on the bed, the shivers were coming back, come on Twilight you cant break down every time you think of him, it took you two whole weeks when he first left just to stop crying. Its was surprising to think that it only takes a dragon ten years to reach full growth. She stood up from her bed and walked to the door, maybe a walk will cheer me up, or I could go see Pinkie, shes always good at making me smile.
Twilights hoof paused at the door, the room lit up a bright green, a color she had not seen for a year or two in the same manner. It was a flame, the same kind that would appear every time Princess Celestia sent her a letter when Spike was around. Thats what she made her mail box do now that he was gone. She slowly made her way over to the half burnt, but oddly not rolled up letter. In fact, it didn't seem to have the royal clasp on it at all. She looked it over, the writing seemed to be rushed and barely legible:
Twilight,
I need you at the Castle at once,
You are needed alone, your friends are not invited!
~Luna
Luna, The unicorn thought. She has never written me before, she usually just visits once a year on Nightmare night. Well I had better get up to the castle instead of questioning royalty, but I still wonder why she would not want all of us there? Twilight closed her eyes and envisioned the castle gates of Canterlot, and with a slight pop she vanished and reappeared moments later before the glorious castle... but it was somehow different. Gloom filled the air, the once cheery castle village was dark and gave chills to Twilight. Twilight began her way through the gates into the main courtyard. Nopony was around, which was odd. Normally, Canterlot had ponies everywhere, buying and selling their wares. Worry spurred Twilights legs to move faster. She reached the castle gates and pushed one open, a feat usually left to AppleJack, but Twilight and the girls had all grown in the last few years and the feat was something minor to the lavender pony now. It didnt take long to find the princesses, they were located where they normally sat during that time of day, in the Room of Thrones. But there was a minor difference: instead of two thrones where Celestia and, on occasion, Luna sat, there was now one throne surrounded by an odd aura. Twilight eased her way to the princesses knowing full well that they knew she was there.
Celestia, Twilight bowed, Luna, its good to see you both... Its been a long time.
Indeed, it has Miss Sparkle, its been too long but pleasantries are not why we are here, Luna stated, not taking her gaze from the throne. Twilight noticed something off about how Luna and Celestia were sitting. They seemed to wobble almost as if...tired.
What is going on here, why are the Thrones of Night and Day gone? The chosen student looked to Celestia for an answer but she did not budge.
Celestia was keeping her concentration on something and instead Twilight heard Luna answer. Shes too proud to admit it, but our time is finally over, Miss Sparkle.
What does that mean, your time is over?
Exactly how it sounds you fool! The Elements of Harmony have decided it is no longer our rule that belongs here in Equestria. Luna stepped back giving up on the spell she was concentrating on and looked toward Twilight. But the only problem is the Elements have chosen one instead of two ponies and we dont know why. Luna walked over to her sister and placed a hoof on her shoulder, unfazed by her touch, Celestia continued the spell.
Sister, that is enough, there is nothing you can do now. We have been at it for hours and to no avail, she turned away from the throne, its time you tell your so called student what her future holds for her.
Celestias spell started to fade until there was no magical presence in the air. I knew this day would come as soon as the Elements chose you and your friends, but you all were just so young, she coughed. Twilights urges for her to rest were stopped by Luna who suggested she listen. The Elements represent the essence of pure Harmony, and because they exist there was an opposite power...
Chaos, but we already defeated Discord what does this have to do with... SMACK!
Twilight clutched her cheek which now stung and stared in surprise at the Princess who was now facing Twilight, tears rolling down her face and an angry look about her, I thought you were smarter than that! Think, Twilight, think! Chaos is one element alone in the body of Discord, just as the element of Magic resides within you!
She slumped down almost as if she was using what strength she had left just to stand and talk. Twilight turned to Luna who was still standing behind her, What does she mean by all of this?
Are you deaf, Miss Sparkle, or did you not pay any heed to the words my sister spoke? But I guess seeing as what you are i guess its only natural to ignore the light from which you came?! she was shouting now, as tears swept her face.
Twilight turned now to Celestia, Princess what is going on, what is all this nonsense? I can't make anything of it, I... Twilight looked from Celestia to Luna in confusion, Light from which I came? Discord was only one just like me? What does this all mean?
Twilight Sparkle, Celestia breathed, my most faithful student... after Luna was banished for more than nine hundred years I controlled both the essence of light and darkness, she spoke quietly now, which scared Twilight. She had never seen her teacher in such shape before More than just raising the sun and moon, i had to keep both in check but it was not easy.
Twilight conjured a pillow at the Princess's head urging her to rest but Celestia went on, for nine hundred years i had many close calls with the darkness and light inside me but i was able to fight them back, but one day the light and the darkness collided in such a manner that was unbearable and in the collision... She paused tears flowing down her cheeks. Twilight...
Before Twilight could answer her, a flash of light blinded the unicorn. Only white could be seen for a few moments, then darkness....
