Princess Celestia is dead and the Nightmare Queen rules from Canterlot in the name of Izrador. Orcs occupy the nation. The ponies are enslaved. Princess Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's last and greatest student, leads what resistance remains from the Everfree Forest.
