Equestria As We Knew It

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Six months ago, I became a princess. And it has been the craziest six months of my life.

Six months ago, I was a regular unicorn who lived a regular life in Ponyville. Sure, I was the student of Princess Celestia, and sure, I had saved Equestria on multiple occasions, but that's not that important. Nopony really cared about me six months ago, and I liked that. I could just live my life with my friends in peace.

But then I got an honorary pair of wings.

It's not like I don't like being a member of royalty, I... just never expected it. I've tried to live my normal life again after the coronation, but it's hard when everypony refers to you as 'princess' instead of just Twilight and when you're supposed to be on the equal ranks of Celestia. Which I'm not. I'm just a normal pony who just happens to be princess. I'm not more special than anypony else.

These are the the thoughts that run through my head as I prepare for my anniversary dinner here in Canterlot. I decide to put on my crown, just for the occasion, and I look at myself in the mirror. No, it just doesn't feel right, I think to myself. So I levitate the crown off my head, brush my mane out a little bit, and look out the window.

From where I'm staying in the castle, I can see Celestia and Luna out on their balcony, doing their duties. There horns are glowing brightly as Celestia lowers the sun and Luna raises the moon. The sky is filled with gorgeous shades of orange and yellow as the sun sets. This is definitely the most beautiful time of day. But the moment doesn't last long as the sky from a strange shade of purple to a dark blue and finally black. Once the sky is completely dark, I watch the two sisters step inside, about to head to the table for the dinner. I stand there for a few minutes, lost in my own thoughts. Finally, I force myself to put on the crown, step outside my room, and head to the dining hall.

"There's the mare of hour!" says Applejack, followed by cheers from everypony else. I can see Celestia, Luna, all my friends, Spike, and even Shining Armor gathered around a large round table, all smiling and staring at me. I make my way to my chair without a word.

"Thank you, everypony," I say as I sit down. "I'm glad you could all make it."

"I can't believe it's been six months!" says Spike, who is sitting in the seat next to me. "I mean, it feels like yesterday we were all gathered at the coronation ceremony!" He pats me on the back as I smile and blush.

"Why, your crown looks absolutely marvelous on you tonight!" says Rarity. I knew she would be the first one to complement on that.

"I'm so proud of you, Twily!" Shining Armor says.

And it goes on and on, everypony commenting on how great I have been as a princess and how they couldn't believe it's been six months and so on. Finally, Princess Celestia speaks.

"So how does it feel, Twilight? Do you enjoy being a princess?"

As much as I want to say no, I hate being a princess, I hate all the responsibilities, I hate the way other ponies think that I'm somehow better than them, I have no choice. I gulp and silently nod.

"Good, I'm glad to hear that."

Feeling self-conscious and awkward, I try to change the subject. "So, are you all ready for next week?"

Luna, who has been strangely quiet this whole time, decides to speak up. "Why, yes! It's going to be one of the most scientifically important events in history!" Everypony else looks at me and Luna, confused.

"You haven't heard?" she says, shocked. "An asteroid is going to hit the moon Friday night!" Everyone just stares at us like we're crazy.

"Wait.. it's ACTUALLY going to hit the moon?" says Rainbow Dash. Luna and I nod simultaneously. "Then does that mean the moon is going to EXPLODE?"

"That would be so cool!" Pinkie Pie jumps in before I can answer. "A million pieces of the moon will rain down everywhere all over Equestria! We could each have our own piece! Hmm... I wonder what moon tastes like... you think it actually tastes like cheese?"

Ignoring Pinkie Pie, Celestia speaks up. "Why yes, I recall you telling me about this one time, sister. It is going to be an astronomical phenomenon." she looks at me. "Would  you and your friends like to stay in Canterlot for a few more days so we could all watch the event together?"

I grin with delight. "We would be honored, Princess Celestia." And with that, several unicorns come bursting through the door, each levitating a tray of delicious food. We immediately dig in, not talking much and focusing more on the food.

It was a nice night, overall. Despite the awkwardness at first, everything turned out to be okay. I just wish I had the courage to tell Celestia that being a princess isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
