Sons of Night
Chapter 1: Getting Started
He stood there, his black wings with blue tips elongated to the max, staring over the lunar landscape. He smiled at the calming scene of the stars in the distance. A voice behind him made him jump, “Zyrex, stargazing again?”
He shrugged, “Got a problem with it Nezia? More importantly, why are you here? You’re usually on Earth, meddling with mortal affairs.”
She walked closer, her white wings folded behind her, “I stopped world war three from happening for the tenth time, so might as well check on you. The humans are a race doomed to kill themselves.”
Zyrex nodded in response. He turned back towards the Earth, smirking, “You know what, why not help them?” She looked at him confusedly. Letting out a sigh, “They already think the world will end this year, so why not make it happen? I hear that some humans want the events of Fallout: 3 to happen, so why not oblige?”
“Because that would involve destroying entire nations!”
“You’re too nice, Nezia.”
“You’re too cold, Zyrex.”
“Then I should go my own way, and you yours. You stay here with these foolish humans, and I’ll find another world to either aid or destroy. Agreed?”
Nezia stood there with her hand on her chin, contemplating whether or not to agree. ‘Knowing Zyrex, he wouldn’t destroy the world, but would most likely just have some fun. Crude fun. Either way, I could always stop him at the last second... Might as well. Wouldn’t have to worry about him messing with me anymore.’
She gave him a nod, and his wings folded behind his back. He walked up to her and extended his hand, which she took and shook. “Now I have to collect Renos...”
“You called?” They both turned to the new voice, finding a boy with black hair, red eyes, and black wings with red streaks going across them. “Are we leaving this pitiful world? Because I can think of a very pleasant one.”
Zyrex gave him a nod, “She won’t let us have our fun, so yes, we are leaving.”
“Thank Celestia.”
Nezia just shook her head and teleported away with a flash of light. Zyrex walked over to Renos, “Who’s Celestia?”
“The current ruler of Equestria. For someone who likes destroying worlds, you sure don’t keep up with current affairs.” Renos laughed cruelly.
Zyrex shrugged, “I don’t like destroying worlds, I just like having some fun. Anyway, are we going to ‘Equestria’ or not?”
“Hell yeah. It’ll be fun to screw with those ponies again.”
“Again? You’ve been there before?”
“The reason they have Equestria is me. I’m the one who screwed up their old place with the winter spirits. Technically I helped them. They owe me. Time to pay up.”
Zyrex facepalmed, “What makes you think they remember? It’s been a few hundred years, hasn’t it?”
“Idiot. They have a play about it at Canterlot every year. Every year, they forget me. Every year, they act like friendship discovered it. I’m getting pushed out of the picture. I think we should remind them who’s really in control here.”
Zyrex smirked, “Shall we invade the town and wreak some havoc on the way there?”
“Nah, I think that we should befriend some of them, then cause emotional trauma. It’s way more painful that way.”
“You always know the best ways to bring pain.” Zyrex brought his right hand to his face and with a snap, they teleported away.

The two materialized on a roof in the capital city of Canterlot. It was night and raining, just the way they liked it. Right as they were about to fly off, they heard some voices below. They moved to the edge of the building, catching a glimpse of two stallions bullying a light grey pegasus in the dim moonlight.
“What the hell’s going on here?” Renos asked, the rage evident in his voice.
All of the ponies looked upwards, but couldn’t make out the figures on the roof.
“Why the hay are you pushing into our business?” The brown, larger stallion asked. “You probably don’t even know how to fight. Get lost before we decide to kick your flanks!”
Zyrex smiled as lightning struck, illuminating the two of them long enough for the trio of ponies below them to make out their glimmering eyes. “You know, I just don’t see that happening.”
“Ditto. I was bullied once. You know where those bullies are now? All over the damn place!” Renos exclaimed proudly.
Zyrex leaped down, landing inches directly in front of the pegasus. “I would advise you two to run home before we decide to get violent and make you meet the same fate.”
The two terrified stallions, confronted with the blue streaked pony shrouded in shadow, ran as fast as their four hooves could carry them, their horrified neighing fading into the distance.
Zyrex turned to the petrified pegasus, “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, you oka-” Renos’ voice cut off. He felt an emotion he didn’t know that he could feel.
“I’m okay. T-t-thank you for intervening.” The pegasus’ voice trembled slightly from the fear of her saviors.
“No problem. Would you mind telling us what day it is?” Zyrex asked, looking around to make sure there were no other ponies who might have seen the incident.
“It’s Hearth’s Warming Eve tonight. We’re celebrating the founding of Equestria thanks to friendship 400 years ago.” The pegasus replied.
“Heart’s Warming Eve, eh?” replied Zyrex. “That holiday is interesting for us, isn’t it Renos?” Zyrex turned around, only to find that Renos was still on the roof, frozen by some unknown force. “Renos? Yoohoo, Renos? Something going on over there?”
Renos shook his head vigorously. “Nothing at all, just a little cold out here. That’s it.”
Zyrex shook his head while smiling. “There’s a pageant for it, correct?” The pegasus hesitantly nodded her head. “Can you take us there?”
“Sure!” the pegasus replied. “Everypony should go to the Heart’s Warming pageant!”
“S-s-sounds fun.” Renos said with a noticeable stutter. “By the way, what’s y-y-your name?”
“My name is Derpy Hooves.” The pegasus said calmly, warming up to the duo. “Ponies call my Derpy for short. You can too, I guess. Call me Derpy I mean.”
“Great, we all know each other, since you already heard our names. Can we get to the pageant now?” Zyrex asked rudely.
Renos replied to Zyrex’s remark with one of his own. “No need to be so impolite Zyrex. I’m Renos, and this is Zyrex. He’s a little impatient, as you can see.”
Zyrex shook his head playfully, “Yes, forgive my attitude. I am just eager to see just how friendship formed this country.” By the end of his sentence, he had to control the urge to laugh.
Derpy was still clueless to his emotions, and motioned them to follow her. With a shrug from both, the trio made way for Canterlot Castle.

There were hundreds of ponies gathered in the main hall, each of the three main races. Pegasus, unicorn, and earth, all staring at the stage. Zyrex nudged Renos, and with a whisper he said, “I think it’s time to get the show started.”
“Maybe I changed my mind. Why should we destroy Equestria? It’s not that important, let’s go destroy Earth or Pandora instead.” Renos replied.
“You’re getting soft on me, Renos. And since when have I ever listened to you?” After finishing his sentence, he disappeared with a cloud of black smoke where he once. Renos scanned the entire room until his eyes rested above the stage.
Zyrex floated there in his original form, smirking. The ponies in the room just took notice to the creature and stared, whereas others decided to scream in terror. “Isn’t that lovely. Do you treat all new arrivals this way?” He outstretched his left hand and placed a barrier on the two main doors, forcing all of the ponies to stay in the one room.
He landed on the stage next to a started baby dragon. He crouched down to its level, “There’s no need to be afraid...” He got up and turned to the crowd, mumbling a word under his breath, “...Yet.”
“There’s no need to be afraid ever!” Renos screamed angrily. He jumped into the air, wings beating rapidly, and flew at full speed towards Zyrex. He caught him off guard, and the two tumbled behind the red curtain.
Zyrex threw him off and with a flap of his wings, got to his feet. “Seriously? You rammed me?”
“I had to! You were going to destro- oh.” Renos’ voice cut off when he realized that they were being watched by 6 pairs of eyes.
“Who are you eggheads, and why are you in the dressing room? You aren’t part of the cast!” A rainbow maned pony shouted angrily.
The ponies just noticed the form Zyrex was in, and the rainbow maned pony prepared to charge at him. “You’ve got to be kidding me...”
She charged, but in the middle of her charge, she found herself floating in the air with a black aura around her. Her eyes fell upon the winged creature, glaring out of anger. “Put me down!” He gave her a smile and threw her to the side. She collided with one of the tables and remained lying there.
Zyrex walked in front of her and knelt, her shaking in fear. “Zyrex!” His head shot around towards Renos.
“I’m not going to let you destroy Equestria! You mad bro?”
Zyrex stood up and shifted his entire body at his brother, “You’re starting to sound like Nezia.”
A lavender unicorn made a flash from her horn, causing him to look at her while Renos charged at him. By the time Zyrex turned to face him, he had been rammed into and flung out the window (which was open for some reason). He just smiled and let himself fall, knowing that the fall wouldn’t be a problem.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “He’s going to be pissed...”
Turning around, he heard one of the ponies call to him, “Thank you, uhh...”
“My name is-”
“Renos.” They all turned towards the window, seeing the same figure as before floating in the room. “You should know better, brother.”
“Brother?!” All the ponies, even the downed one, screamed in unison.

“B-But he’s a pony, and you’re a...Whatever you are!” The lavender unicorn shouted towards Zyrex.
Within a matter of nanoseconds, he was directly in front of the her, “Looks can be deceiving.” He outstretched his hand and put it on her forehead, the aura surrounding them both. After a few hushed moments, he let go and she went limp.
“Twilight Sparkle, eh? Think I snuffed that out for a while.” He turned to the cowering ponies, excluding Renos. Zyrex let out a sigh, “I released the barrier a while ago, and she’s fine. She’ll wake up soon, but I think Celestia would like to have a word with us, Renos.” With a nod, the two disappeared, leaving the ponies wondering who exactly they were and what they wanted.
Dash got up and wobbled in front of her friends. Shaking, “What the hay just happened?”
