The Rainbow In the Rough

Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter One

A few clouds slowly drifted by in the warm afternoon sun. The few shadows they casted moved pasted one of the windows of Carousel Boutique. They caused the Rarity to pause her work and take a look out the window. She let out a dreamy sigh as a rainbow blur came in and broke apart the clouds.

“Oh, Rarity... What are you going to do with yourself?” Her eyes never left the sky as the cyan mare with the rainbow mane boasted to the other weather team members. She knew that the mare never means it; in fact, she knew it was trying to get others to do their best. Sadly, it never came off that way to most. A meow came from behind her to pull her back to what she was doing before she got lost looking at the sky.

“I’m sorry, Opal dear. Mommy just got sidetrack for a bit.” Rarity made her way back to her workstation and give Opalescence a little pat before eyeing what she had started before her little sky gazing. Opal purred and jumped down floor, feeling her job of getting her owner back on track was finished. Rarity let out a sigh as she looked over the dresses for her five friends. The gala was coming around again and she was not going to be caught dead wearing the same dress as last year, and the same thing would happen for her friends.

All the dresses where finished, she just need to get her friends to stop by to try them on so that she could make the final changes. Rarity had no trouble getting Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie to come over, but it was the other three that she had the real trouble with. Applejack was always too busy working to swing by, Twilight never seemed to put down a book or stop testing things she just learned, and lastly, Rainbow Dash was trying out a new trick or she was actively avoiding her.

There was only one time in which she could keep that girl in one place was with a double chocolate chip chocolate muffin. Rarity would never even take a bite unless she was able to do a five hour work out and a three hour spa visit afterward. Another sigh found its way into the world as she realized that only one store in town made those muffins.

She didn’t waste anymore time, leaving everything in its rightful place in her organized mess. Throwing on her saddlebags and grabbing a few bits for the muffin, Rarity left in hopes of bring back that one Wonderbolt, Rainbow Dash, back. Her mind began to drift to thoughts of Rainbow’s mane blowing in the wind as she flew by. Giving her head one quick shake to rid of the images that came to it.

The walk to Sugarcube Corner was rather nice. Rainbow and her weather team did a good job at keeping number of clouds low. There was enough to give shadows for ponies who needed a break from the sun. Soon a nice walk like this had to end as Rarity made it to the front steps of the store. It wasn't like she didn't want to stop by, she just didn’t want to walk into another random party Pinkie would throw.

Taking a deep breath, Rarity opened the door and made her way to the counter. So far there wasn’t any loud bangs and confetti falling all around her. Once she made it to the counter, Rarity found a smiling Mrs. Cake.

“Hello there, Rarity. What can I do for you today?”

“I just need one double chocolate chip chocolate muffin, please.”  Rarity just kept looking around; she really didn’t want to be there if another party started. Mrs. Cake raised a brow as Rarity looked like she was trying to hide something. Not finding it any of her business why the young mare would be acting this way, she just want to the back of the store to find the muffin.

Mrs. Cake wasn’t gone long. The blue mare with the pink frosting-color mane came back with a muffin that would have Derpy beating down the door. Rarity smiled as Mrs. Cake placed the muffin in a little box and tied it shut with a little bow. Rarity pulled out the bits needed to pay for it and once Mrs. Cake finished the transaction, Rarity had placed the muffin in her bags.

Once she thanked Mrs. Cake, Rarity was rushing out the door. Right as the door closed, there was an explosion of confetti and a pink mare jumped out of nowhere shouting “surprise!” as loud as she possibly could.

“Hey, where did she go?” Pinkie looked around for her friend.

“She left, dear. She seemed to be in rush or something. I’m sure she will stay long enough for another party later.” Mrs. Cake walked next to Pinke and put her forehoof around her as they walked back behind the counter. Pinkie nodded and smiled as the smelled of freshly baked good drift past her nose.

Outside, Rarity was rushing back to her shop to drop off the muffin before trying to find Rainbow Dash. Before even making it to the door, her magic had it opened up as soon as hit the first step. Rushing into the little kitchen and dropping off the muffin, Rarity was right back outside with her eye to the sky for that cyan mare.

Luck seem to be on her side as she watched a rainbow streak across the sky. Not wishing to lose her, Rarity gave chase. After bumping into a few ponies along the way and saying sorry, after what felt like a hours of running, Rarity came to a tree at Sweet Apple Acres with a bright rainbow color tail hanging down from it.

“Hello, Rainbow Dash. Might I have a word with you for a minute?” she called up hoping that the mare hadn’t fallen asleep just yet. The leaves began to shake as Rainbow dropped down from the tree and let out a yawn as she gave Rarity a sleepy-eyed stare down.

“What can I do for you, Rarity?” Rainbow moved a hoof to cover her mouth as she let another yawn out. Rarity was fighting to keep her blush under control. The way Rainbow’s mane was sticking out in every direction more so than usual looked really good on her.

“I need you to come by the shop so that I can make some final changes before the Gala.” Rarity could hear the faint groan coming from Rainbow Dash. “Did I forget to say that there is a double chocolate chip chocolate muffin for you if you can do this for me?” Just saying chocolate was enough to get Rainbow’s mouth watering.

Rainbow nodded and started to race to Carousel Boutique, leaving a grinding Rarity behind. Her eyes watch Rainbow’s flank rush off and she gave her head another shake. “Get your head out of the gutter, Rarity. That is no way for a lady to behave.” She rushed after her.
