Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Wonderbolts' Spring Spectacular
Previous Chapter Next ChapterChapter 3: Wonderbolts’ Spring Spectacular
There was a cool breeze throughout all of ponyville. The flowers were in blossom from the new coming of spring and there was not a cloud in the sky. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day to watch the Wonderbolts in all their glory. Rainbow Dash headed over to Fluttershy’s house. Rainbow had had two tickets, and was ready to spend the day watching the Wonderbolts with her pegasus friend. Though Fluttershy hadn’t been a huge fan of the Wonderbolts, she had gone with Rainbow many times since they were fillies.
When Rainbow had landed she found Fluttershy feeding her pets. Spring had just started a few weeks ago, and unlike her animal loving friend, Rainbow’s job as a weather pegasus had been a lot more lax during Spring. Rainbow just watched as Fluttershy finished preparing the last dish for Angel. The bunny’s meal was much more elaborate than the others and was in a bowl filled to the brim with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
“You know, that bunny is spoiled.” Rainbow asserted finally announcing her presence to Fluttershy. “Oh no, it really isn’t too much,” the kind pegasus looked up to greet her, “besides Angel bunny deserves it.”
“I’m not so sure about that,” Angel shot an obnoxious glance towards Rainbow before returning to his intricate breakfast. “Okay so are we all ready to set out?” Rainbow asked finally breaking the silence. “Yeah, um let me just make sure the animals will be fine, I’m not sure they’ll be fine.” Rainbow sighed as she waited for Fluttershy; Angel had ended up pushing the timid mare out of the house. “Okay, but um, are you sure that you’ll be fine?” The only reply was the slamming of the door. “See I told you’ll they’ll be okay, now lets hurry up, I don’t want to miss a thing.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
The two pegasi took their seats. Rainbow looked back, she exhaled in relief. They had just beaten the rush, had they been any later they have had to wait in the lengthy line. She loosened up, trying to get comfortable in her seat, as they waited for the show to begin.
While they waited for the show to start, the two friends talked about their past experiences at various Wonderbolts shows. “and remember that time when you got drunk and started flirting with Lightning Streak?” at this the timid mare blushed, “yeah” she had answered just barely audible. Although Fluttershy would only occasionally drink, Rainbow seemed to have a ton of stories of her doing ‘awesome’ things while being drunk; at least that was the way Rainbow saw it, to Fluttershy it was much more embarrassing. “I still can’t believe he took you home” the yellow pegasus had turned completely red, “well it was only because I was drunk, he was just being nice.” Rainbow shot her an accusing look, but before she could press further an array of fireworks, cheers, and an announcer cut her off.
“GOOD EVENING MARES AND GENTLECOLTS. TONIGHT WE WILL BE PRESENTING THE WONDERBOLTS SPRING SPECTACTULAR.”
With this the crowd roared, even louder than before, among them was Rainbow, cheering at the top of her lungs. Fluttershy was also cheering loudly, but compared to any other attendee she was still soundless.
“WE HAVE A GREAT LINE UP FOR YOU GUYS, WE HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY THE SHOW.”
The announcer was quiet and now the only noise coming out of the speaker was music. From the opposite side of the bleachers the Wonderbolts flew in. Although they had their uniforms on, Rainbow could identify them easily. Fire Streak, High Winds, Lightning Streak, Blaze, and Wave Chill. This had been the first team; In order to have over-the-top action and endure the lengthy show the Wonderbolts were split into two teams, usually composed of four or five members. This was the warm up, for both the fans and the Wonderbolts. They didn’t want to give away any tricks too early and they used this as an opportunity to stretch their wings with some simple yet crowd pleasing moves.
Rainbow had seen these tricks and even knew how to do perform some of them flawlessly, but they still captivated her. There was something about seeing the Wonderbolts perform that brought her back to her filly days were she had been enthralled by the wonder of these “impossibilities”. If it had been anyone else, she wouldn’t be nearly as fascinated, but she had the upmost respect for the Wonderbolts; at least for most members, she had seen these pegasi perform for years and never doubted them once, but this new member couldn’t possibly be a better flyer than her. He was a Wonderbolt though, and Rainbow didn’t want to crush any dreams he might have and get him kicked from the team, she just wanted a spot on the team. But for now, Rainbow could care less. That thought had been at the back of her mind and for now she was now she was stuck in a grip of astonishment and admiration.
The first routine of the night ended with the ‘Streak bros. Tornado’ a name created by some of the fans. Fire Streak and Lightning Streak were known to be on the same group during most of their shows, so the duo was easily given the title of the ‘Streak brothers’. Since that discovery they had been known to perform many dual tricks. One of their more popular tricks was the Tornado, in which they both flew high, above the line of sight from any other ponies and descended at break neck speed. The usual smoke trail that followed Fire and Lightning would change colors to a nearly glowing red and blue respectively. Along with the descent they would spiral around each other creating a red and blue ‘tornado’ and moments before crashing into the ground they would separate into opposite directions. The crowd loved it.
Almost without a break, the second team flew in. Soarin’, Spitfire, Fleetfoot, Rapidfire and… and…the new guy? That was Rainbow’s best guess, but by now she had expected it to be him.
This time around the action picked up. Rapidfire and Fleetfoot both did a bronco bomb, simultaneously. Soarin’ and Spitfire were also a great duo, they were perfectly in sync. This flawlessness didn’t come easy, but many ponies were willing to bet that if they were continuously together they would be doing something other than polishing drills. As for the new guy, he wasn’t doing anything to demanding. He was mostly adding to the effect rather than showing his own movies. Still, there was no denying he could fly and he didn’t seem to be trying at all.
After the team two was finished team one took their place. It went like that for a while and with each round Rainbow had practically lost her voice. In the seat next to her, Fluttershy had been quiet, aside from the occasional “Yay.” She was mesmerized in amazement almost as much as Rainbow, but didn’t express in nearly as loudly. Normally, Fluttershy would have been louder by now, but her first cup of cider was still full. Buck, I wanted her to get drunk, it would have made another great story, Rainbow quickly imagined her coy friend turn into a social and daring pegasus, before returning her gaze to the Wonderbolts.
There was a brief intermission, which Rainbow used to get Fluttershy another glass of cider in hopes that she would finish the first. Fluttershy, feeling guilty that her friend had wasted her money, reluctantly drank her first cup and a little of the second. Rainbow gave her yellow friend a questioning look hoping she would finish her second cup, but the announcer saved the gentle mare.
“MARES AND GENTLECOLTS, IT IS TIME FOR THE GRAND FINALE”
The pegasi eagerly took their seats. The short intermission provided a break for the Wonderbolts too; the finale included both teams, except something was off, the new guy wasn’t there. Guess he couldn’t handle it. Rainbow felt slightly sorry for the rookie, but now she was sure she could out fly him. The Wonderbolts had pulled out all the stops; it was difficult to take it all in, even for Rainbow. The all had their own showcase, in which they would one would get the spotlight while the others added to the effect. After Spitfire, the last one to perform her showcase, they all went into a flurry of astounding tricks, it originally seemed chaotic, but it was all organized and in sync.
Suddenly, there was a transition. All the pegasi had gone from the haste to a much more calm state of flying. The ‘Streak Bros.’ did a variation of their tornado, but instead of a death-defying drop they created a circle, looking like coy fish following each other in perpetual motion. The others, followed by a trail of smoke, casually flew around the field; it seemed as if they were setting the stage for something.
“LOOK” Somepony yelled. Everybody in the audience shifted their heads to the sky. In the far distance, some pegasus was coming towards them at an incredible speed. Sparks started to fly from behind the pegasus as a blinding beam of light started to take form behind him. Is that a….? Everyone was looking, mouth agape at the pegasus flying straight towards them. Soon the beam of light became clear. Unlike any other Wonderbolt, the light was just that, not the trademark smoke. He was probably miles away, but before anyone could react to the momentous feat he had reached the stadium. He went through the circle created by the Streaks and within feet of the ground flew directly up. About two hundred feet in the air, the ray separated from him and he continued another hundred feet, before going for another dive. The tip of the light just waited in air as the end of it was waiting to catch up. The crowd was full of gasps as the Wonderbolt quickly approached the ground. The male pegasus hit the ground with enough force to create a large explosion of sound and simultaneously the tail of the light had caught up and created an outburst of light. The light then transformed, WONDERBOLTS was now written across the sky in a firework-like display. The crowd went wild.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, that was the most amazing thing I have seen. EVER. Rainbow and Fluttershy cheered, Rainbow exceeding anyone in the stadium and Fluttershy able to match them. It wasn’t a sonic rainboom, but something similar to it. No one had known exactly what they had just seen, but for that moment, nothing else could compare.
(Author’s Note: I hoped you guys like it, I didn’t bother to edit it, but I’m not too sure if I’m good at painting a picture with words. Hopefully it all looked as cool in your head. Also I still can’t seem to figure out what is wrong with the comment system, everytime I click ‘add a comment’ it directs me to the main page without posting my comment. Any ideas?)
