Chapter 1: The New Wonderbolt

Rainbow Dash had been as excited as ever to see the Wonderbolts perform. She looked at her tickets to the air show; something about them stuck out and filled her with anticipation. This was the first Wonderbolts performance of the new year, and was the most important as they usually premiered some amazing new tricks that never failed to impress.

“Only a few more days, I can’t wait!!!” Rainbow said excitedly. There had been a lot of speculation, everypony had been talking about the show. “I wonder what they’re gonna do this year,” Rainbow pondered before shrugging it off quickly. She glanced at her walls, filled with posters of the Wonderbolts and its members. She had kept the same interest in the Wonderbolts that she had from her filly years and although most ponies had shared her enthusiasm with the Wonderbolts, she still felt slightly embarrassed to have made few modifications to her room.

Rainbow spent the night looking at some at the paraphernalia she had collected from the previous years, each one building her excitement for the coming days. She remembered her first air show. She was just a filly, but she remembered it like it was yesterday. The highlights of that show, and every other show, played through her mind. She remembered seeing Storm Cloud perform the first Buccaneer Blitz, and the time her dad told her about Blue Yonder, the first pegasus to ever break the sound barrier.

She wished she could have seen it in person, but she it happened way before her time. Rainbow was able to find a scrapbook containing some newspaper clippings her dad had saved. BLUE YONDER BREAKS MORE THAN THE SOUND BARRIER. It was nearly a tragedy, since he was the first pegasus to ever go that fast the doctors didn’t know the effect on the body. He strained his wings and had broken a few of his bones upon the sketchy landing. Still, with the help of some of the other Wonderbolts he was able to take his bow.

Although Rainbow hadn’t been the first to break the sound barrier, she was the first to perform a sonic rainboom. After Blue Yonder’s incident many ponies saw the sonic rainboom as just an impossibility, and a hopeless endeavor, but she had proved them wrong. She took comfort in knowing that as she fell back to sleep.

Rainbow Dash surveyed her surroundings. It was pitch black and she carefully moved around while calling out, hoping to get a response. Nothing. She had continued this for a few minutes, still nothing. “OW” Rainbow had walked straight into something metal. She felt around the object and discovered it was quite large, feeling like a wall of cold steel.

“Hello Mares and Gentlecolts,” a voice appeared. Although the voice was loud, it seemed distant. Before Rainbow could respond, the lights had turned on around her revealing that she was in a locker room and, was in fact, leaning against a wall of lockers. “Hey kid, hurry up that’s your cue.” A raspy voice called out. Rainbow took a while to take it all in after the brief sensory overload. She came face-to-face with a stern pegasus. He was definitely an aged pony, but years of what seemed to be hard work and experience gave him a stable appearance.

“Didn’t you hear me kid, hurry up!” the stallion had raised his voice this time. Rainbow was taken by surprise but walked to the newly found walkway that the pony was intently pointing her to. She could hear the voice from before, seeming closer and closer with each step. Before she could reach the end, the pegasus from before called back to her. “Don’t forget your goggles kid.” Rainbow turned around and grabbed the goggles from the stallion before giving him a confused look. “You’re supposed to wear them for the show… rookie” the stallion finally replied but making sure to lower his voice on that last remark. Rainbow hadn’t heard it, but as she went to put on her the goggles on she noticed something that she hadn’t taken the time to notice before. She was fully dressed, but not just in any apparel… she was in a Wonderbolts uniform.

“And without further ado….”

“Hurry up, you have to be out there now” and with a push, Rainbow had found herself out of the locker room and into a much bigger venue. She was blinded by the light. This is getting old, Rainbow thought as she rubbed her eyes to adjust to the new spotlight.

She had missed what the announcer had said, but it had lead to cheers from what sounded like thousands.  She found herself in the middle of a field, above her the other Wonderbolts had flown in. Rainbow knew what she had to do, she took off flying with them. She found it surprisingly easy to fit in with their complicated drills. She didn’t know how, but she was able to predict where they others were going to be and where she had to be.

The show consisted of many loop de loops, upside down flying, a buccaneer blitz or two, and lastly finished with a sonic rainboom. Rainbow was breathless, from both the tiring show and how awesome it was. After the performance she joined the rest of the Wonderbolts, who had been getting ready to bow to the audience. As she stood in the middle, between two of her favorite wonderbolts, Soarin' and Spitfire, something caught her eye. Out of nowhere, a small sparkling object materialized. She tried to make it out, but before she could it smacked her across the side of her face. Rainbow winced in pain, and was ready to curse out the pony that threw that; she turned to the crowd and found that there were many similar objects, each varying in size, heading towards her. There was no way she could have avoided them all.

Rainbow Dash woke up in shock still stuck in her dream, trying to avoid getting hit. She noticed her surroundings and came back into reality. “Maybe being showered in diamonds isn’t the best idea after all,” she muttered to herself before readjusting herself and falling back to sleep.

Rainbow had woke up luckily without the help any gems or rocks. She had been enthusiastic as she the night before. Probably even more so as today the Wonderbolts were holding a conference to discuss this upcoming season. It was also to build hype and anticipation for their upcoming performance. The first show of the season was one of the most popular events and had one of the best turnouts.

After her morning routine Rainbow headed off towards the conference. Maybe they’ll reveal some new tricks early, or maybe I can get an autograph from Spitfire, Rainbow imagined on the way to the conference.

The crowd was thick; Rainbow tried to wiggle and inch her way through, but only got about halfway before not being able to move any further. Why couldn’t it be outside? I would be able to fly up and get a better view.  It didn’t matter though, she had a good view and the Wonderbolts had stepped on the stage leaving her with little time to complain.

The interview was filled with many questions that any non-wonderbolts fan would be turned off by, but not Rainbow Dash. The Wonderbolts had a very casual look about them, they were able to joke around with fans and answer questions about their personal lives, even though they were supposed to be professional.

“Okay everypony, calm down real quick” Spitfire announced with a chuckle at the last joke she made. “I know we have been very casual so far, but its time to get to business.” With that the laughter died down. Waiting for silence she continued, “I think its time to introduce our new rookie…” on that word the room was full of gasps, even Rainbow was taken by surprise. It had been a while since they had taken a new recruit and, as far as Rainbow could remember, there had been no recent tryouts. A male pegasus who was the only one wearing a uniform, had sitting nonchalantly behind the known members, took his place next to Spitfire. “This stallion here may be the fastest flyer I have seen, except for me,” Spitfire claimed in good humor, “seriously though, this guy right here has potential, we hope that you guys welcome him as we have.” Rainbow couldn’t believe her ears, surely she could beat this new comer in a race any day. She ready to challenge him, but the flood of reporter ponies, all wanting to get the scoop on this rookie, prevented any chance she had of talking.

(Author’s note: This is my first fic, please provide constructive criticism. Also if you guys like it enough I will continue, but before I do I want to ask for any suggestions for a name for the new Wonderbolt. Also I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me with a picture for this fic, I purposely left out any details for describing him so you had room to work with if you wanted to help; I want him to be opposite of Rainbow and lightning themed (or similar to it) as she represents a clear sky in color. I know its kinda asking a lot, but it is completely optional, so don’t hate me too much for asking.)
