Midnight
Chapter 1: Midnight travels
“Mommy, please! Don't!” Midnight screamed as her father picked up the last of her belongings and placed them outside. “Daddy stop!”
“Don't look at us like we're the monsters!” her mother cried back, looking at her daughter with hatred. “It's your fault you're a freak!” Ember Heart spat. Midnight had always been a freak, causing ponies to stare and talk about Ember Heart and her husband like they were bad ponies. Her husband had a blank expression on his face, as if he were trying to fast forward this entire ordeal. Midnight's father had always been decent to her, always giving her kind words of advice when her mother wasn't looking. But now that kindness had disappeared when his wife had finally 'had enough' of their daughter.
“GET OUT!” Her mother squealed. Midnight looked to her father, willing him to do something, but he only shook his head negatively. Midnight blinked tears out of her one good eye, banishing all thoughts of ever being accepted into her family. Ponies would always be scared of her, she just had to accept that.
“If you want me gone, I'm gone. I will never come back.” She shook her head, silver mane falling over her face as she enchanted her bags and flew off into the night.
It had begun raining two hours before dawn, and Midnight realized she would need a shelter. Being a filly as young as she was( a bit older then the cutie mark crusaders), she couldn't fly for long or hold a spell forever, she didn't get very far from home. She discovered a small opening within a pile of rocks by the road, and climbing inside she was soon hit with the fact that all of her possessions were ruined by the rain, and then the rest of what happened soon sank in. She sniffled, biting her lip before she could take it no longer and wailed into the thundering rain.
“WHY CAN'T YOU LOVE ME!? Why can no one love me? Am I that disgusting!? WHAT AM I?” She flailed her wings, wishing she could just be normal. Midnight sighed when she realized no one would answer her, that she was alone. She curled her night colored wings around herself in sorrow, crying for hours until she finally wore down and slept.
Midnight was awaken by a jab to the side. She murmured, cringing away from the pressure. Another jab to the side made her jolt sharply and hit her head on the rocks above.
“Are you alive?” A small voice said.
No. I appear to be dead. Thank you for asking. She thought, but begrudgingly gave out a 'yes' and pulled herself out of her temporary bed.
“O-oh....Oh dear Celestia!” The pony responsible for the jabbing gasped, dropping her stick and fleeing in the opposite direction.
“Thanks for the help!” Midnight called after sarcastically, pulling herself to walk along on her trip to nowhere. She sighed. Some ponies were born with wings or a horn, but she was cursed with both. That and the inability to understand why she was so freakish in the first place. At least it was near dusk, and she could move without causing any more trouble then necessary. However, it would be a very long night.
As Midnight strolled through a path cloaked with forest, she heard the faint whisper of ponies. She thought about going the opposite direction, but her curiosity pulled her towards the noise.
“....--hy you love books so much, I'll never understand it.” a little colt rolled his eyes.
“Of course you wouldn't. You don't understand the enlightenment one achieves by reading. One day, I will read every book ever written, and then I will be the smartest pony in Equestria!” The other colt said excitedly.
“The only way you could ever read every book written is to go to the Great Library, and everyone knows that the Princess only allows smart ponies in there!” The first colt snorted. “Besides, how will you ever get to Canterlot? Your dad's a janitor.”
“I will someday! Just you wait! I'll show yo--”
“Uhm...excuse me...Could you tell me more about this...Great Library?” Midnight asked, stepping closer to the colts.
“What is wrong with you!?” The first colt exclaimed, turning to run before Midnight snatched both of them out of the air with her magic and holding them in place.
“No. Tell me about the Library. You said it holds enlightenment?” Midnight asked sceptically.
“Y-yeah! Everything you ever need to know!” The second colt shook his head vigorously.
“Everything? Do you think it holds a book on what's wrong with me?” She asked, tears brimming her eyes.
“E-everything!” The first colt agreed. Midnight smiled for the first time in her life, setting the colts down. They ran off bawling at the top of their lungs, but She didn't care if they ran and screamed, she had a library to get to.
