Prologue: A Poem

Long ago, before your time,

I ruled the world, my king at my side.

Peace and prosperity were the norm,

Nopony was sad, gone, forlorn.

Our armies were great, powerful indeed,

To beat back the darkness, the evil in seed.

For once, long ago, in brightest of day

There was a grave fright, a tragedy, a shadow in light,

For a dragon, old and wise, and a dragon, young and small,

Did combine their power, their will, their all.

And so was born Saaroklir, Dragon of Chaos,

Agent of Shadow, Agent of Deceit,

Agent of Discord, Agent of Defeat.

His armies rose strong, dragons upon drakes,

Breathing green fire, did wyverns in their wake.

The armies of Chaos descended on our land

And as they fought, harmony together in one band,

Was the mighty dragon Chaos sealed away in his tomb,

And crowds of ponies sang “Defeated Chaos in his womb!”

For he was just a spark, A part of the flame,

Engorged on his power, he turned away,

From harmony and peace, from great empire,

Just so he could climb out of his mire,

And so we killed him, absorbed his soul,

and sent him to Tatarus, bound to the shoals,

For when salt water licks his wounds,

Pain beyond pain will seep and will loom.

But when pain become memory, anger becomes rage,

And agony creates rage, beyond any courage,

For the spirit of Chaos needs no flame.

Just darkness, primal and strong,

Can bring about a war, an evil beyond

Our great empire ceased to be,

As Chaos possessed the small and the weak.

Old stallions became young, foals became wise,

And fire rained forever, forever from the sky,

The spirit of chaos would once again rise.

Civil war destroyed our land, our people, our unity,

And tore apart feelings, kindness, dignity.

So the king and I, with great remorse,

Abandoned our empire to the fires of discord.

And we fled, far to the south,

Where a great forest stood, vigilant, without sound.

We stepped into the grove, thick as can be,

For at last we knew of a way to be free.

The Tree we saw, bright and gold,

Cast apart from the shadow, the darkness untold.

And so with hammer, with anvil and steel,

A pinch of our power, a bit of our Seal,

And a pinch of ashes, from my dear father,

Cadmin the Brave, Cadmin the Leader,

Cadmin the Bold, and Cadmin the Farther.

Gave the body life, beyond life and death,

And he took the weapon we forged from sleep’s caress.

Scythe in hand, black robes unfold,

The Reaper came forth, from the untold,

And wings came forth, black wing of pure shadow,

A bright spark on his head, and out came his horn,

For he had become the first Alicorn.

And with his Scythe and with his gibbet

Did he go out to collect his debt.

“10000 souls of mortal ones, bound to Chaos’s will,

And only then shall I be still,

For darkness has fallen, descended upon thou,

And the only way to stop it is to bow,

To my power, and to my blade,

And I shall purify them, the light I will raise”

10000 souls he brought to me, 10000 mortal ponies,

10000 soul of innocent ones, 10000 victims of cruelty,

and with his power and might scythe,

Did the Reaper destroy and block out the light.

So we fled again, to that forest unbridled,

Traveling with hammer, with anvil, with little,

For we took the bark of the that tree, the golden metal wood,

and forged a powerful means to do good.

Harmony will be restored, Harmony will return,

For the Elements will do so, so we learned,

But we could not wield them, powerful as we are,

For we were responsible for darkness that runs.

Like blood and like blade, we folded our hand,

Thought never to see the light again.

But destiny is brave, and destiny is bold,

This time it came is the hands of the cold.

And Destiny brought forth an idea, a thought, so silly,

For who was more pure than a just born filly?

And the king and I, weak from the Pox

Did pour ourselves into the the chains, the locks,

And we forged life once again, deep in the grove,

The Tree of Harmony glowing bright as we toiled in the smoke.

Silver and gold, blood and toil,

Did we give to create our daughters, forever loyal.

One of the sun, and one of the moon,

Did the two Alicorns come, shining new.

Immortal they were, Invulnerable they would be,

For the sun and moon were their destiny.

They would not die, they would not end

Until the sky itself would die and would bend.

And so our princesses walked forth unto shadow,

While we stood back and died, in the midst of our marrow

For our own souls were part of their being,

and we sacrificed ourselves for them to be living.

----------------------------------------------------------

Ah, so little ones, our tale begins anew,

For the Reaper is gone, his spirit diffuse.

Centuries ago the Princesses locked him away,

The Elements of Harmony leading the way.

In the darkest cave, in the dark of the night,

Did the iron coffin of the Reaper lay tonight.

Filled with his ashes, his fragmented soul,

did the Reaper lay, his body cold.

For centuries and millennia did the Reaper lay still,

As he renewed his strength, his anger, his will.

One day he broke free, escaped his iron tomb,

A ghost of ashes, incorporeal, unburdened by mortality,

did the Reaper move, quickly and swiftly,

For I was to meet my son once again,

But I was not Fair Queen Candice in her dress and gown,

But Queen Chrysalis, corrupted and down,

as my power returned, my soul restored,

a false horn became mine, a symbol of my girth

For I had become Queen of a race so large,

It swelled with races, mixture, collage.

It was not two races, it was not three,

For the shapeshifters were me, and I am thee,

Not the Gray Mare but a spirit, evil as can be.

And I met my dark son in the field,

I told him my story, my prowess, my yield,

About my corruption, my destiny, my collapse,

My Powers, my energy, my spirit of chaos,

and the alicorns responsible for my betrayal, my loss.

We hatched a plan, a gamble, a risk,

To destroy the one that would bring both of us in.

I taught him my power, my ability, my skill,

So he could capture one that I feel

Could change the world forever, powerful indeed,

and so came the wrath of the dark princessee.

For Nightmare Moon was powerful, a beacon of the dark,

Feared was she then, even by the sun, a mark

a stain on her power, a stain on her robe,

A stain that would once again be her despote

For the Elements of Harmony were used that day,

And Nightmare Moon returned to her previous state.

The Reaper was angry, his rage uncontrolled,

for he had been burned by the power of the untold.

The Elements had corrupted him, turned him bright,

But as darkness set in, I showed him the light.

“Steal the Elements, away from their gates,

And let their own heroes be their ultimate fate.”

And on that day, on that unpleasant night,

Did I try to marry Shining Armor the Right.

Disguised I was, and disguised I shall be,

For my Changelings were ready to aid me.

And in the time of chaos, in the moment of strife,

Did I see the Reaper’s form, gliding slowing in the sun

A cloud of ash flying, slow but steady run.

And in his hand he held them, the Elements I made

To corrupt and destroy, he would always portray.

and he fled away, and I righted by the light.

No longer did I care, no longer did I stand,

For my corruption was broken by love, of all the land,

A love so bright it destroyed my very soul,

And as the Gray Mare I left my empire to go,

far across the countryside, far across the sea,

To advise those I cared for about fate and the unseen

And those who run away, those that will flee,

those that struggle, those who cannot see,

Shall face the true wrath of their destiny.
