Chapter 1: Prologue

The Underground

---------------

Prologue

The storm was coming. It was midnight, dark clouds covered the sky all the way to the horizon. A large forest was in the valley created by two large mountains, one north and one south. Flashes of lightning provided the only light. The drone of thunder never seeming to end. The wind rustling the leaves on the trees.  At the edge of the forest, a cave opened up from the base of one of the northern mountain. Three ponies in robes stood inside, their faces hidden by shadows. The first pony was thin, the second normal size, while the third was large and muscular.

"It's far too dangerous to go now, we can't risk it." Said the thin one.

"You know as well as I do that we don't have a choice." Replied the second.

The third angrily interjected "If we are going, we must go now! We cannot wait for the storm to get worse!"

The three of them shuffled out of the cave. The wind whipping into their faces. They starting walking in the direction of the southern mountain, when the first asked "Are you sure you know where we are going?"

"Yes, just keep following me!" the second yelled back.

All of a sudden, the rain stopped, and so did the ponies. All sounds ceased except for a roll of thunder. All of a sudden, a *poomph* was heard, and a flare shot up into the sky. Lighting up everything around.

"This way! Quickly!" shouted the third.

They ran as fast as they could towards the flare. Weaving through the trees and roots. Eventually they came across a dirt road. As they ran across it, the first pony noticed that there was something looking like a lump off to the side of the road, in a ditch. Seeing as they were on important business, he ignored it and kept running.

They soon came to an open field in the middle of the forest, in the shape of a circle. In the center of the field, lay a small package. It looked like a rock had been wrapped up in brown paper, and a string tied around it. The third pony cautiously walked up to it, then examined it, then said "Hey, get that pack over here."

The thin pony was wearing a satchel. The third pony picked up the package, and put it into the satchel. They walked out of the field. As soon they entered the forest, the storm picked up again, this time starting to rain.

It was a blinding downpour, they could barely make out anything more than 10 feet away from them. But then, that's when they saw the yellow glowing eyes. The second screamed "RUN!"

They ran as fast as they possibly could, the rain smashing into their faces, the wind whipping at their manes. They could hear large footsteps coming from behind them, but none of them dared to look back.

As they came to the road, the first pony saw the lump again.  He had the nagging feeling that he should go look. He gave the satchel to the second pony, saying "Just keep going! I'll be right behind you!"

The first then ran over to the lump, and found out that it was a baby pegasus. Dark purple, with a light purple mane. It was barely breathing, and one of it's wings looked horridly bent. He realized that if he was just 10 more feet over, he would have never seen it in the horrid downpour. He picked the filly up and put it on his back, and then resumed to run.

The footsteps were louder than ever. He kept on running, although he had no sense of direction. He heard somepony screaming "Where are you? Dante where are you?" He ran towards the voice. He was relieved to find out that it was the other two ponies. The footsteps faded away.

The storm was truly horrid at this point, bending trees nearly all the way over, branches falling around them. Dante asked "Do you know where the cave is Finn?"

The third replied "Yes, now let's get out of here!"

After running for a minute straight, they saw the entrance to the cave. All of a sudden, a rumbling noise started. The second exclaimed "Mudslide!"

Sure enough, the side of the mountain was falling down. They all started sprinting towards the cave, because they knew that they would be stuck outside with the monster withe the yellow glowing eyes if they did not make it in now.

They all made it in safely except for the thin one, who’s leg got hit by a falling rock. They all stopped to recover their breath.

“What was that thing? And why did that thing stop chasing us?” Asked Dante, the thin one who saved the foal.

"That’s not important right now, what is important is that we're safe, what is that thing you have on your back?" The muscular one, Finn, asked.

Dante replied "Well, you probably won't believe me, but it's a pegasus."

"A pegasus, I thought those were only legends. Myths, old ponytales told to us by our parents to help us go to bed." Said the other pony, Jakob.

Dante replied, "So did I Jakob, so did I..."
