Return to Ponyville

The rhythmic ‘click’ of the train passing over numerous ties, fills the large train car. Which except for a few random ponies, two other worldly beings, and the mane six; remains mostly empty. A certain fashionista sits on one of the larger seats and stares out a nearby window with a look of ill content on her face as she watches the scenery change.

“C’mon Rarity, talk to me.” A familiar voice pleads, causing the mare’s expression to twist to a scowl.

“What does it matter Twilight?” The unicorn begins as she blows a flock of hair out of her face. “You have no interests in listening to what I have to say or any advice I give.”

The lavender mare’s ears droop to the side as she listens to her friend’s comment. “Hey that’s not fair, I was just…”

Rarity’s head snaps towards Twilight’s comment with an expression of pure rage; causing the lavender mare to recoil a bit. “Not fair? Oh, you are one to talk.” The unicorn scoffs as she leans closer to mare seated in front of her. “You led another on for months only to tear their heart out and then viciously stomp on it!”

“But…”

“But nothing, you didn’t see the look on Sonic’s face as you denied everything you have two shared.” Rarity leans closer to the mare, till she was only mere inches from her muzzle. “And to add insult to injury, you kicked him out!”

Twilight stares blankly as the white unicorn’s enraged expression.
Rarity returns to a sitting position before continuing. “What is wrong with you, Twilight? It’s obvious that you have feelings for him. Why did you…”

“I panicked alright!” Twilight snaps cutting the white unicorn off.

“Panicked?” Rarity says as she crosses her forelegs. “You panicked and hurt another because you were scared?”

Twilight silently nods.

The white unicorn face hooves and lets out a heavy sigh. “Twilight how can you be…” Rarity trails off as she removes her hoof and looks back up at the lavender mare. “You know wha,t I’m done.”

Rarity slides out of her seat and steps into the aisle. Prompting Twilight to raise an eyebrow. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to show Sonic that not everypony here is some indecisive tease.”

Twilight rears back. “You don’t mean-?”

The white unicorn turns to the mare with a bright smile. “I’m going to rock his world.” She turns back and starts trotting down the train car. “I’m going to make him forget all about ‘pull you heart strings Twilight Sparkle’. While showing him…”

Rarity trails off as a magenta aura surrounds her and starts to lift her from the ground. “Let me go, Twilight.” Rarity snaps as she turns back to the lavender mare. “You had your chance…”

“I get what you’re trying to do, but please stop.” Twilight pleads as she releases her hold. “I can fix this, just give me some time.”

A bewildered expression falls upon the white unicorns face as she looks up at the mare. “How do you plan on ‘fixing it.’?”

Twilight turns away as a small smile appears on her face. “I talked to Sonic about what happened and he told me he understood.” The mare says as she turns back to the white unicorn. “Sonic knows that I still care for him and that this was just a big misunderstanding.”

Rarity climbs back into her seat and glares at the mare. “For a pony that claims to possess great knowledge and skill, you’re rather dense.”

“What do you mean?”

The mare lets out a sigh. “Of course Sonic is going to say he understands, you probably backed him into a corner and left him no alternative.”

“What?”

“Knowing you; you probably pleaded for him to understand that you still cared and that you were sorry. Not letting up until he told you what you wanted to hear.”

Twilight’s eyes go wide. “So you’re saying that…”

“Or course not.” Rarity says as she relaxes her expression. “But this whole ordeal has probably left the poor dear a bit rattled.”

“I suppose your right.”

“Plus, you’ve effectively pushed him into the hooves of another.”

“…” Twilight’s eyes snap open in shock.

“It’s rather obvious that you’re not the only one that has taken an interest in our new hero. Rainbow Dash seems to like Sonic and I’m sure him and Blaze have history. It would safe to assume that some of our other friends harbor some sort of feelings as well; including yours truly.”

Twilight’s ears perk up. “What?”

“It’s true,” Rarity says with a slight smile. “I’ve been keeping to the sidelines since I figured you were interested in Sonic.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“This is going to all be all uphill for you, Twilight.” Rarity says as he turns away. “I’m sure the others assumed there was something between you two and backed off.” The mare turns back to Twilight. “However, after you said otherwise, they’re going to make there move.”

Sonic lets out a loud sneeze as he turns his head and buries his face into his arm. ”Eh, sorry about that,” The hedgehog says itches his nose. “You were saying?”

Applejack raises an eyebrow at the hedgehog besides her. ”You feelin’ alright there, Sugar hog?”

“Yeah I’m fine; I think I’m just getting a cold.”

“Well then let me warm you up.” An energetic voice chirps as two pink forelegs wrap around the hedgehogs torso, followed by the sight of a familiar puffy pink mane as a certain pink party pony abruptly hugs Sonic and begins to nuzzle him affectionately.

“Uh, Pinkie what are you doing? Sonic asks as he watches the mare bury her face into his chest.

“Warming you up, silly,” The party pony chimes as she looks up at the confused hedgehog. “You said that you were cold.”
Blaze stares blankly at the display in front of her, while Fluttershy holds her forelegs to her muzzle and lets out a slight giggle as her cheeks begins to turn red. “Oh my.”

“Hey Sonic, I think she likes you.” Rainbow Dash mocks as she gives the hedgehog a smirk.

“Or course I like Spiky,” Pinkie claims as she goes back to nuzzling Sonic. “He’s my bestest-best friend. Any pony that saves all of us is at least that in my book.”

“That’s not what I…”

“Hey, no argument there, Pinkie Pie.” Applejack says cutting the cyan mare off as she tilts her Stetson upward. “We’d all be over a barrel if Sugar Hog hadn’t stepped in.”

Blaze gives the blue hedgehog a slight smirk. “Sounds like you’ve been busy.”

“Meh, not really.” Sonic states as he waves it off his free hand. “Just saved everyone here and stopped an evil tyrant, no big deal.”

“Well you did kinda lose your head a few times while doing it.” Applejack flatly states, gaining a sour look from the hedgehog.

“You lost yourself?” Blaze begins as her eyes widen in concern. “What happened?”

Sonic lets out a sigh and turns back towards the lilac cat. “It’s a long story.”

Blaze crosses her arms and gives the hedgehog stern look. “It’s a long train ride.”

The blue hedgehog turns away and ponders the cat’s comment for a moment before responding. “Touché, what did you want to know?”

“I’m just worried about you, Sonic.” The lilac cat’s expression softens. “Maybe the beginning would be best.”

Sonic sighs heavily and glances at the others seated next to him. “You guys probably already heard most of this so, if you want to…”

“No!” A normally reserved voice shouts, prompting everyone to turn towards a certain yellow Pegasus; who instantly lets out a small yelp and hides behind her mane. “I mean we’re not going to leave you when you probably need a friend right now.”

An orange foreleg plops on the hedgehog’s shoulder. “We ain’t gonna leave ya, sugar hog.” Applejack says as she gives Sonic a warm smile.

“Yeah, Spiky,” A certain party pony begins as she holds the hedgehog closer. “You were so broken up last time. So it...”

“C’mon guys,” Sonic says cutting the pinky mare off. “This isn’t like that I’m….”

Rainbow Dash glances as the hedgehog with a stoic expression. “There is no use trying to get rid of us. We’re staying.”

An inquisitive eyebrow rises on the lilac cat’s forehead as she listens to each of the mare’s comments and then turns back to Sonic. “If this is a touchy subject than…”

The blue hedgehog lets out another heavy sigh as he buries his face into his free hand. “No, no it’s fine. Just give me a second.” Sonic pulls his hand away from his face and looks up at the cat with a surprisingly relaxed expression. “It all started a few months ago, when I first arrived….”

Blaze covers her mouth in shock. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know.”

A small chuckle escapes the hedgehog as he glances at the multicolored ponies seated beside him. “I don’t know what I would have done if these guys hadn’t stuck by me during all this.”

Fluttershy smiles warmly at the comment, while Pinkie increases her death grip on Sonic and lets out a small giggle. “Of course we stuck by you Spiky.” The mare says as she nuzzles the hedgehog again. “You’re our friend…our bestest-best friend.”

“We ain’t going to leave you to the wolves.” Applejack sighs. “Not again.”

Blaze raises an eyebrow at the wheat colored mare’s comment, but is cut off as a certain cyan Pegasus cuts in. “Hey, I’ve always been on your side so you-WILL YOU STOP DOING THAT PINKIE!”

The party pony looks up at the Pegasus with a confused expression. “What, I’m just trying to keep Spiky warm.”

“That’s not what it looks like to me!”

“Ah think somepony is jealous. “ Applejack mocks as she waggles her eyebrows at Rainbow Dash.

“I’m not jealous!” The cyan Pegasus says with a scoff. “I just think that it’s the right time to be doing that now.”

The farm pony lets out an amused snort. “When in the Sam hell have ya ever worried about being proper?”

Rainbow Dash turns away as she lets out a ‘humph’ “It’s just weird, ok.”

“You know Dashie if it’s bothering you, I’ll stop.” Pinkie says as she returns to a sitting position. “But then you’re going have to take over. Spiky still feels really cold.”

Rainbow Dash blushes profusely at mare’s comment.

Sonic forces a smile as he tries to stop the eventual disaster from starting. “Nah, that’s ok. I’m feeling a lot better now.”

The cyan mare’s wings flair outward. “You saying I’m not good enough.”

“No, not at all.” The blue hedgehog mutters out as he holds his hands out in defense.

“Then what!”

Sonic looks to the two mares and cat seated beside him; only to receive a sympathetic smirk in response.

“Gee, thanks a lot guys.” The hedgehog mutters under his breath.

Rainbow Dash continues her piercing glare towards the hedgehog. “Well?”

Sonic looks up at the Pegasus and smiles. “C’mere.”

Dash seems a bit taken the sudden gesture. As if she didn’t except Sonic to actually take her up on it. The Pegasus forces the lump in her throat down and begins to slowly approach the blue hedgehog.

“Sorry Pinkie, but it looks like-OPH!” The hedgehog is cut short as a certain cyan mare abruptly plops down on his lap and looks down at him with a burning red face.

“Dash what are you-”

“Pinkie said you were cold right?” The mare turns way; trying to hide her burning cheeks. “So unless your core is somewhere else. This is a more effective method in warming you up.”

A certain pink party pony and yellow Pegasus appear shocked by this sudden action. Blaze looks at the back of the cyan mare’s head with an unenthused expression.

“Oh, I get it now.” Applejack muses as she locks eyes with the embarrassed Rainbow Dash.

“You do?”

“Yeah, it’s like when you get trapped somewhere and ya need to huddle together to keep warm. Ya hold each other in a sorta hug since it’s the best way to conserve heat or something like that.”

“Yeah exactly,” Rainbow Dash mutters out as she scratches the back of her head. “That’s what I was going for.”

“A bold move, rainbowed one.” A menacing voice says from behind the mare. “I wasn’t aware you two were that close.”

The cyan mare turns to a not so enthused Blaze; who gives her a piercing stare. “No, no it’s nothing like that. S-Sonic is just a friend, yeah.”

“Is this true, Sonic?”

A pair of gloved hands rises up in defense. “I’ll agree to anything; as long as it doesn’t involve you barbecuing me and Dash here.”

Blaze lets out a very unlady-like snort and crosses her arms.

Applejack notices his and gives the lilac cat the same expression as she did Dash.

“Oh, don’t you even start.”

Twilight looks at the event unfold as her cheeks burn in response. “W-what are they doing over there?”

“Nothing that concerns you.” Rarity mutters out as she returns to staring out the window of the train car.

The lavender mare’s ears fold back as she sneaks another look. “B-but Rainbow is sitting on Sonic’s lap and he doesn’t seem to be bothered by it.”

Rarity sneaks a peak and then turns back toward her seat neighbor. “What did I tell you~?” She hums as she gives Twilight a smirk.

“I-It’s not fair; I just need some time to…”

“Calm down Twilight, I’m sure you’re just over reacting.”

The lavender mare turns towards the while unicorn; who was now reading a fashion magazine. “How would you know?”

Rarity calmly turns a page with her magic. “Because you always do.”

“Ok, what gives?” Twilight snaps, break the white unicorn away from her reading. “You’ve been nothing but cruel to me since we left the station.”

The fashionista uses her magic to lower her heading glasses as she calmly looks up at the infuriated mare. “You really have no idea do you?”

“Uh?”

“Are you so blind to what you’ve done that…” Rarity cuts herself off as she places a hoof on her forehead. “No Rarity, you said you weren’t getting into this again. It’s best to allow some time to cool down or else you may react aggressively.”

Twilight tilts her head to the unicorn’s mumbling. “Rarity?”

A few stray ears perk or stolen looks turns towards the small group at the other end of the train car. As a few loud out bursts of laughter echo from the group.

Rainbow Dash, no longer on Sonic’s lap is sitting in Pinkie’s former spot; while the party mare is in hers. Several sets of eyes and ears turn towards a certain blue hedgehog as he recalls another former event.

“So here we are in the middle of this lake. No land for miles and the only thing keeping us from drowning is this chunk of drift wood; that we just happen to notice when we fell in. Night is falling so we…”

“We starting singing row row row your boat!” Pinkie chimes him

“What no, that’s not what, happened next…”

The group burst into a fit of laugher, prompting the hedgehog to let out a grown and cross his arms.

“Ah, don’t be like that Sugar hog.” Applejack begins as she places a hoof on the blue hedgehog’s shoulder. “We’re just having a bit of fun, that’s all.”

Sonic snatches the mare’s hat and places it on his head.

“Hey!”

“It’s hard to see your face when it’s hiding behind this hat.” Sonic adds as he ruffles the mare’s mane.

Applejack fiddles with her mane as she looks up at the hedgehog. “I suppose your right.” She smiles. “Could ya do that again, Sugar Hog? I rather enjoyed that.”

The blue hedgehog lets out a snort and puts the mare in a head lock and starts giving her a noogy.

“Consarn it, Sonic.” The wheat colored mare snaps as she pulls way. “That’s not what I meant.”

Applejack’s usual tied back mane, now puffs in numerous spots. Causing a few members of the train car to stifle a laugh; except for one.

“Bahahahahaha! That’s a good look for you AJ.” Rainbow Dash mutters between fits of laughter. “Sonic did you a favor fixing that dull look you always have.”

The wheat color mare frowns at the mare’s comment and rises from her seat to lunge at her, but is stopped by a gloved hand on her shoulder. Applejack looks up to a set of emerald eyes looking back at her. “Don’t her get to you.”

“B-but...”

Sonic places his hand on the mare’s head and scratcher her behind the ears. “Sorry AJ, I got a little carried away with that.”

Applejack hums as her ears are scratched. “It’s ok Sugarhog, I forgive you. Just don’t stop doing ‘that’ till ah say so.”

A few muffle coughs draw the hedgehog’s attention toward a several shocked mares and a somewhat annoyed cat. “What?”

“How are you doing that?” Rainbow Dash mutters as she almost climbs over the hedgehog to examine Applejack.

“Oh, oh, me next, me next!” Pinkie shouts as she bounces in her seat.

Fluttershy rocks back and forth in her seat. “Oh my”

Blaze coughs loudly into her hand; prompting everyone to turn towards her. “Yes, we’ll touch on this matter in a moment.” The cat gives Sonic a stoic look. “Could I speak to you for a second?”

Sonic glances at Blaze as he removes his hand from Applejack’s head; who lets out a low grown. “Sure what’s up?”

The lilac cat rises from her seat and motions for Sonic to follow.
“Uh, ok.” The hedgehog mutters out as he places the hat back on Applejacks head and follows Blaze to another train car.

Rainbow Dash raises an eyebrow as the two exits the train car and disappear from sight. “I wonder where they’re going.” The mare turns back to the others; relaxing her expression. “You guys have any ideas?”

Applejack lets out a sigh as she flips the brim of her hat upward and leans back in her seat. “I’m not rightly sure, but there’s been somethin’ on my mind since we left the castle.”

Pinkie Pie springs up in sits in the now vacant stop between Rainbow Dash and Applejack. “What’s up AJ?”

“You guys are think this is just me bein’ weird, but…”

Sonic follows the silent cat though the doors leading to the next trail car. The hedgehog attempts to inquire where there headed, but hesitates in fear of invoking Blaze’s wrath.

“You know, those guys are always like that. They’ve always been a real touchy feely group. So I doubt they…” Sonic trails off as he forces a laugh.

“…”

Sonic scratches his chin as he ponders another topic. “So how have things been in the Sol Dimension? I bet you have that place running like clockwork.”

“…”

“Look if this about what happened earlier, I can…”

The blue hedgehog trails off as the lilac car abruptly turns towards him with a stern expression and starts to approach him.

“Uh hello?”

Blaze lets out a heavy sigh as her expression softens into a frown. “What am I going to do Sonic, I shouldn’t be here.”

Sonic smiles and the distressed cat and places a hand on her shoulder. “Relax, these are good people...eh ponies. “

“Yes, but…”

“These guys are friends of mine, they’ll make sure you get a warm welcome.”

“That’s not what I’m worried about, Sonic.” Blaze mutters out as she steps out of Sonic’s reach. “How am I supposed to rule a kingdom or defend it when I’m all the way over here? Nega is probably conquering my land as we speak.”

Sonic closes the space between two and places both hands on the cat’s shoulders. “Times flows differently here, a few days over here is probably a few minutes over there.”

Blaze drops her head and lets out a sigh. “Yes, but It could take months for the Sol Emeralds to recharge. I just don’t…”

The cat is cut off as a gloved hand tilts her head towards a warm smile. “I’m sure you’ll get back before anything happens.”

“Yes, but…”

“And even if for some reason you don’t, I’ll go over there and help you take care of it.”

Blaze returns the smile and clasps the hedgehog hand. “Sonic you are a true friend; I don’t know what I’d do without…”

The cat trails off as she pulled to a warm hug. “S-sonic?”

“A friend of mine told me once that even when times are at their most grim. Not having to face it alone will help you get though it…or something like that.”

Blaze nuzzles the hedgehog’s shoulder as she returns the embrace. “Thank you, Sonic.”

Three sets of multi colored eyes stare back at a now very uncomfortable farm pony.

“You can’t be serious?” Rainbow Dash mutters out as she continues to stare at the wheat colored mare in disbelief.

Pinkie frowns and rubs her chin as she recalls what Applejack just said. “I can believe it, but then why deny it?”

“I-I told you guys, but none of you wanted to listen to me.” Fluttershy squeaks out as she starts to sink back into her seat.

“Well like ah said, it’s just a theory. However given all that’s happened; (especially recently.) Ah can’t help, but see it as a possibility.” Applejack says as she turns her attention to the floor.

Rainbow Dash takes a quick glance at the lavender mare at the other then of the train car and then turns back to the others. “But of all ponies; why does it have to be Twilight? I mean those two have nothing in common and….”

“Now Dash, don’t let yer personal feelin’s involved in this.” Applejack scorns as she turns to the cyan Pegasus. “Twi, is free to be interested in anyone she wants. It’s not our business.”

“Yeah, but why is she interested in Sonic. It just doesn’t make sense.”

“Maybe she fell fer Sugarhog when they were living together, ah don’t rightly know. Though ah’m sure there is something between those two.”

“Then why did she kick him out?” Rainbow Dash fires back with an annoyed look on her face.

Applejack ponders the cyan mare’s comment for a moment. “Ah can’t say fer sure, but maybe…”

“Maybe she was scared.” A meek voice chimes in as a certain yellow Pegasus enters the conversation.

Rainbow Dash and Applejack turn to the fidgety yellow mare. “How do ya figure?”

“Well, um...” Fluttershy begins as she fiddles with her bangs. “Maybe things started moving too fast and she got worried that she won’t be prepared.”

The cyan mare’s lips begin to quiver as she attempts to hold back another fit of laughter. “Yeah sure, *snicker* Twilight; the most studious and over calculating pony there is, wasn’t prepared for something. Bahahahahaha~!”

“Well than miss ‘expert’ what do ya think happened then?” Applejack mutters out as she frowns as the cyan mare.

Rainbow Dash snickers a few more times as she tried to regain her composure. “Well here’s what I think…”

The goddess of the sun and co ruler of Equestria,; stands before her royal chambers with a soured look on her face as she levitates a small glass orb.

“What aren’t you telling me?” The princess mutters out as she continues to stare at the glass ball.

Frantic footsteps breaks the Princess concentration as the ‘other’ ruler of Equestria appears behind her with a concerned look on her face. “Sister, we have a matter that need…”

Luna trails off as she notices the small object levitating in her sister’s magic. “Is that?”

“Yes dear sister, this is the orb of memories.”

“But why is it not it not in the Royal Vault with the others?”

The Sun princess turns to her sister with a concerned expression. “I’ve asked the orb to show us why we know Sonic, but it has come up with nothing. It’s as if the memory has been erased.”

“Not erased, sister,” Luna begins as she approached the white alicorn. “Just buried. It has been many a year since you’ve probably thought of the hedgehog and probably many more since you met him.”

Celestia smiles mischievously at her younger sister. “Has Sonic been on your mind as well?”

The moon princess lets out a heavy sigh and gives her sister a stern look. “It’s as if we’ve been reunited with an old friend; only to realize that other than a familiar sensation, we don’t remember them at all.”

“It will take time, dear sister. For both of us is seems.”

The brightly colored locomotive pulls into Ponyville station letting out a loud hiss as it comes to a slow stop. Its doors suddenly snap open and occupants of each car spill out onto the platform. Many ponies of different type and color buzz around the train cars as they retrieve their luggage or meet up with other colorful ponies.

Chatter from the dozens of former passengers, fills the once quiet train station as they leave the platform and head to their destinations; leaving everything quite once more. A piece of crumpled paper rolls across the wooden blanks as a gentle breeze blow from the east.

The tranquil space is broken once more as a few members of the mane 6 emerge from the train and onto the platform. Rarity seems to be engaged in a conversation with Fluttershy, while Applejack and Rainbow Dash seem to be still debating on what the wheat colored mare mentioned earlier. Followed by Pinkie; who is now in Sonic’s arms as she snoozes soundly; With Blaze and Twilight taking up the rear.

“What if I were to charge up those gems with my magic?” Twilight inquires as she followed the lilac cat out of the train.

Blaze frowns at the comment as she continues to follow the rest of the group. “Thought about that, the only ones capable of such a task would be the alicorn sisters.” She ponders. “Though even if were possible. I doubt it would be enough.”

“Enough?” Twilight’s ears flatten at the comment, only to flick back up as she makes another suggestion. “What if you used the emeralds Sonic has to recharge them or use the staff? “

The frown from earlier returns to the cat’s face. “Attempting either of those would most likely end in catastrophic disaster.”

“Then what about…”

Sonic lets out an amused snort at he shifts the sleeping mare in his arms. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were trying to get rid of Blaze.”

Twilight rears back in shock at the comment. “Of course not, Blaze looked upset when she wasn’t able to return to her own world.” Her ears droop. “I was just trying to help.”

“It seems your friend can’t take a joke.” Blaze mutters out as she matches Sonic’s pace.

The lavender mare’s ears snap upward. “You were kidding?”

“Of course I was.” Sonic begins as he slows to match Twilight’s pace as he frees up a hand and pats her on the head. “You have to learn how to take a joke once in a while. I knew you were just trying to be helpful.”

Twilight looks up at the hedgehog’s caring emerald eyes and smiles brightly. “I will Sonic.”

“Pardon me for interrupting,” A soft voice begins, as the sound of heeled steps draws near. “…But what about your friend there? Won’t she be upset that she missed throwing that little event she had planned? Blaze inquires as she points to the sleeping pink pony in Sonic’s arms.

Sonic smirks as the cat as she shifts the small pony in his arms. “I got it covered.” He clears his throat. “Pinkie what time is it?”

The pink mare’s eyes suddenly snap open as a wide smile appears on her face. “Oh, oh, please say it.” She pleads as she holds her hooves up in suspense.

With a wink the hedgehog turns to the party pony and then back to the others. “You guys are going to get a kick out of this.” Pinkie starts to fidget in Sonic’s arms. “It’s party time, let’s go have some fun.”

Pinkie springs from the hedgehog’s arms and takes off in a flash; leaving a pink streak in her wake.

Blaze and Twilight stare slack jawed as they watch the hyperactive pink mare zip away.

“Bahahahahaha!” Sonic burst out in a fit of laughter. “Y-your f-faces...” He mutters out as he attempts to stifle a laugh. “Priceless.”

Preparations

Author's Notes:

It seems everyone's favorite purple unicorn has set herself back a lot more than she thought. Also it appears the newest arrival is uneasy about her lands safety now that she's way. Also we find out that the CMC have been busy, building themselves a a fan club for a certain speedy hedgehog.
