When Calligraphy Comes to Town
Chapter 1: Ponyville Here I Come
"So this is the place." I mutter to myself, facing, with a frown, a rundown building on the outskirts of the small town. "It's surely not what was advertised." I step into the ruins with a light hoof. Working my way around. "I suppose it could use some paint, and the roof could be better, but hey, it isn't that bad." I place my saddlebag gently onto the ground, then I change my mind and sling it over my back. "If I don't do it now it won't get done. Athena! Where are you?" At my call a white as snow owl swoops to my side. "Don't do that. You know I get worried when you wander off."
"Hoo!" Is all I'm greeted with as she rests on my back.
"What do you think of our new home?"
"Hoo!" I take that as 'I like it!' and wander to a nearby booth in the market.
"I'll take 4 gallons of your finest purple paint please." I say with more confidence than I have in this strange place. "And throw in 2 gallons of yellow, and 1 gallon of turquoise." I can't help my eccentric color choices. When your mane and eyes are as brown as mine and your coat as pale of a purple. You can't help but like bright colors.
"Yes'm." The stallion behind the counter shuffles off to do my bidding, and returns faster than expected with the buckets. "That'll be 25 bits. Do you need help with these?"
"No, no, I'll be fine." I quickly toss the coins onto the counter and lift the paint with my magic. It feels like more than I can handle, but I manage a slow trudge back to my humble, emphasis on that word, abode. When I get, home, I quickly begin repairs. I don't have the strongest magic, so this is practically torture. I have to pretty much take the entire roof off, and then fix it. That's a lot for one mare.
I finally finish much later with a small huff, and plop onto the ground. I think getting the painting done today will be a long shot, but hey, this place looks good. I look up at the finished roof, which peaks perfectly into a pyramid. It frames the small square building nicely. And the gray slate tiles it came with will be perfect with my color choices. I step inside and realize how much brighter it is without the slumping ceiling. My desk, couch, and kitchen set need to be moved, but they're here. Of course, they're here amongst boxes, and boxes, and boxes, of stuff.
"Time to unpack." I slowly lift the first box over to me, not wanting to get tired out. I get lucky, it's kitchen stuff, just have to put it in the respective cabinets. "Okay, next box." I go on like this until my small corner kitchen is totally done, and my living room, right next to it is perfect. I walk into the small bathroom, and put away all of my toiletries. The bedroom comes next, the movers at least had some sense and put my bed in there, along with my nightstand and bureau. So just a few small shifts and everything will be done. I had my desk put in the living room, I tend to work better when I'm not in my small enclosed bedroom. It's just a weird thing of mine. Working in tiny spaces makes me feel cluttered and frustrated.
I hear a sudden knock on the door. "Hello?" I'm greeted only by a pink blur whizzing by me.
"Hi hi hi!" The mystery mare chirped rather loudly. "I'm Pinkie Pie! You can call me Pinkie! Welcome to our town!" Then, something rather unexpected happened. She started to sing. "Welcomewelcomewelcomewelcomewelcomewelcome! To you from all your friends here in Ponyville!" I cringed a little at the last high note.
"Hello Pinkie Pie. I'm Calligraphy. How can I help you?" I extend a hoof towards this rather excitable pony.
"I just wanted to say WELCOME!" She jumps up and down over and over. I can see all of my breakables looking vulnerable on their shelves.
"Great Pinkie! Why don't you show me around this fine settlement of yours."
"Absodoodledandy!" What did I get myself into...
"This is the Carousel Boutique! Rarity?" We step into the store, and I see a white unicorn hurry over to us.
