Empress Lucena, Shining Light is the keeper of the sun and the aurora borealis, the Empress of the Celestial Empire, and one of the first leading figures and protectors of Equestria along with King Astrim, her husband. She was the mother of the ruling family of alicorns, and who also begot two daughters Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Her part in the universe was keeping the magnetic atmosphere of Equestria in check as well as controlling the sun.

Her mane and tail resembled the magnificent colors of the aurora borealis. The beautiful colors of her eyes and wings resembled the sun’s beautiful radiance, and her coat was as white as snow. Her crown and necklace were designed and crafted by the hooves and amazing mind of Emperor Vulganaris. Its was said that she could never feel cold no matter how cold the climate.

Empress Lucena just like the other alicorns are not gods, and only performed their roles in protecting and keeping the universe in order. They were flawed even with the powers they had in their possession. Being the one of the top rulers of the time, she gave wisdom to all of her fellow equine brothers and sisters, and made every effort to make sure that whatever came from her mouth was sound and of truth.

She was a kind and loving mother who trained her daughters, and taught them many different spells. She successfully trained Celestia on raising the sun, and keeping the aurora borealis in check.

Lucena has done many things and had also been through alot as the Empress. She was one of the founding members for “The Equestrian Alliance”. Every decision that was made for the world was discussed and agreed upon with her husband. She help her brothers and sisters become or transform into alicorns. She has conquered in many wars, and had defeated many foes.  

She was friendly to all her fellow alicorns, and over centuries has gained the trust and friendship of the other races. Although there she had a strong friendship with many kingdoms, she and other alicorns couldn't get along at all with the Diamond Dog Empire.

Empress Lucena met her fate upon confronting "The Great Dark Shadow" in "The War of the Mighty"...
