Chapter 1: My Only Sunshine

My Only Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine

A mother’s love is something that is brighter than any light in the world, even that of the sun.

”You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.

You make me happy when skies are grey.

You’ll never know dear, how much I love you.

Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

The sunlight twinkled into the room as Ditzy Doo, more commonly known as Derpy Hooves, finished her soft little song and smiled down at her daughter, who was currently trying to blink away the sleep that she had just come out of.  “Good morning, my little muffin.”  As she said that, Derpy gently set a blueberry muffin, Dinky’s favorite, right in front of the little filly, trusting its scent to wake her up to her fullest.

Which of course, it did.  Upon sighting the unfortunate baked treat, Dinky had let out a gleeful gasp and lunged forward to take a huge bite out of the fluffy, delicious bread that both she and her mother shared a peculiar passion for.  “Good morning, Mama!”  Crumbs sprayed out of the filly’s mouth, which turned down in a frown after seeing her mother’s slightly disapproving look.  Once she had swallowed the mouthful eagerly and let out an innocent giggle, she leapt from the covers and wrapped her hooves around Derpy’s own in a tiny hug, looking up at the mare with innocent eyes.  “I love you!”

The adorable, singsong voice of her daughter was almost always enough to bring a smile to Derpy’s face and the little pony knew it too.  “I love you too, my little muffin!”  Derpy giggled along with her daughter as she lifted her up into the air and showered the little filly with kisses.  “Go ahead and finish up your breakfast, we have to get you all ready for school, don’t we?”  With that she turned and trotted from the room happily to go get herself ready for her own day at work, smiling widely like she always did after seeing her Dinky.

Always the one to forget brushing her mane, Derpy decided that for once she was going to do that first.  After pulling over the stool and plopping down onto it, she looked at her cheerful reflection and began brushing at her mane, which was a bright yellow that was faintly reminiscent of sunlight.  As she worked the bristles through each section of her hair again and again, Derpy softly hummed the tune to her favorite song, one that she also loved singing for her daughter every single morning.  Once that was over and done with, she stood up and trotted over to the door, opening it and looking down at the little filly that had been just about to knock on it.  “What is it, Muffin?”

“I was gonna ask you if you wanna brush my mane too, Mama!”  The look of innocent pleading could have made a manticore decide to use its tongue to do the filly’s mane, but in this case it only made her mother smile and nod.  “Yay!”  With an excitement only a child could have, Dinky clambered up onto the stool and was practically bouncing when Derpy turned around with the brush in hoof.  “Hurry, Mama I don’t wanna be late for school!”

“Now Dinky, you know what they say about muffins…”  Derpy’s lighthearted, yet at the same time slightly stern, voice trailed off as she began to work at her daughter’s tangled mane with the brush, stroking it over and over again until all the snags were completely gone before moving along to the next patch of snarled hair.

The little groan of childish annoyance was a definite award-winning sound for producing a smile as the filly completed her mother’s sentence with a wary, heavy, and slightly-annoyed voice.  “If you rush them then they’ll end up being burned or flat, I know, Mama!”  Despite her saying that, Dinky obviously didn’t think much of her mother’s saying when charged with excitement like she was.  “But I’m not a muffin!  I’m just a pony!”
