Ruby Eyes and Echoes

Chapter 9: Epilogue

Previous Chapter

Author's Note

I have decided to end this story to prevent myself from ruining it. It took me more than 7 chapters to build up the mood and I believe if I continue, the mood will come crashing down. This ending will hopefully tie loose ends and set me up if I ever want to write a sequel and said sequel just might ruin the mood but that is yet to be discovered. Thank you for your support and someday I will start Ruby Eyes and Echoes part 2 (but a different title). If you find anything amiss with this ending, if it is to short, grammar or anything, feel free to tell me and I will look into it.

Thank You- Altoid

Epilogue

The sudden slowing of the train snapped Scratch out of her sleep. She stretched and listened to the conversation outside her room.

“We have arrived at Ponyville, Mr. Toity,” A mare's voice said pleasantly.

“Ah good, very good,” replied a stallion in a thick Canterlot accent that Scratch found very annoying.

“I do hope this designer lives up to what ponies say about her.”

There was a knock at Scratch's door and the same mare's voice called from the hall, “Miss DJ Pony, we have arrived.”

“I know,” the unicorn replied flatly. She disliked all Canterlot ponies, they were always so formal and snooty sounding.

'Well almost all of them' Scratch thought about her sister, a cellist in the royal band. She rarely saw her family anymore.

The last time she saw either Maxim or her Octavia was at Mr. Bramblebrims’ funeral seven months ago. As she stepped off the train she remembered what her father said after the service.

“Though both of you leave me and go to live your lives far away never forget that I am right here,” he pointed to his daughters' hearts. “If the world seems to big and the struggles to large that I am always with you.”

He said that whenever the two young mares left him but the emotion in his voice never subsided. They were the loves of his life, the inspiration to every one of his songs. Though he rarely wrote new ones any more. It had been five years since his wife had died and the hole that had formed in his heart never quite healed.

“Ah Vinyl Scratch dear, come walk with me,” Hoity Toity said snapping her out of the memories. Scratch could hear the flirtation in his voice “we don't want you to get lost.”

“I may be blind but I can see better than you,” Scratch trotted past him, nose upturned and tail swishing. Stallions continuously flirted with her and she turned them all down. A relationship just wasn’t her thing. Plus, almost all of them wanted to be with her because she was famous and good looking. In the end they got broken hearts and dreams of fame and fortune while she got a boost for her ever growing ego.

Scratch allowed her technicians to set up her equipment at the show's location while she went to the center of town to a place Bramblebrims often spoke about.

“Welcome to Sugarcube Corner,” beamed a mare “I am Mrs. Cake, how may I help you?”

“Give me a dozen of your best cupcakes,” Scratch said with a hungry smile, then quickly remembering her manners continued. “Please and thank you.”

Scratch only had to wait for a moment before the cupcakes were boxed and ready to go.

“That is some fast service,” she picked up the box, “so, how much for the cakes?”

“Oh my, I can't remember how much the baker's choice cupcakes cost,” the Mrs. Cake replied “What does it say on the box?”

Scratch hated these moments but she prevented the annoyance from showing.

“I’m blind but don't worry I'm not insulted,” Scratch smiled to help convince the mare that there were no hard feelings.

The room went unnaturally silent, Scratch couldn't even hear the mare's breathing.

“Yeah, um, so,” Scratch couldn’t stand the silence “how much for the cakes?”

The mare snapped out of her shock.

“Five bits,” she replied hesitantly.

Scratch could tell that she had dropped the price to atone for her comment.

“Here is ten bits,” Scratch tossed the money onto the counter and trotted away.

Scratch loved her job, playing music was her life but when a show went wrong, even if it wasn’t her fault, it made her angry. From the unhappy mumbles of the crowd Scratch could tell that the fashion show was a bust. She allowed the music to fade as the angry mumbles grew in loudness.

'I wish I could see this,' Scratch thought to herself.

The show quickly ended and Scratch headed to her hotel fuming over the waste of time Ponyville proved to be. She plopped onto her bed and started eating the cupcakes. The sugary flavor of the cakes helped convince her that it was no use in being angry over a failed show. She soon found herself humming songs as the sugar took hold. Scratch began singing the song that made her famous. Her own voice drifted pleasantly throughout the room making Scratch smile.

"Find me and hold me

come and take me away

together my love

into the blue sky

Take my heart with you

and look in my soul

fall for ruby eyes

and feel our echoes..."

Scratch slowly started to drift off to sleep when there was a knock on the door.

“Hello?” a bubbly voice called from the hall. “Is anypony home?”

“I am trying to sleep,” Scratch growled, the irritation of the day suddenly returning.

“Oh, sorry. I’ll stop bothering you,” Scratch listened to the hoofsteps leave. She sighed heavily and started to fall back asleep when suddenly she shot up out of the bed.

‘I know that voice.”

She leaped onto her hooves and rushed out into the hall.

“Ditzy!” she called out but the only answer she got was an angry mumble from a nearby room.

She made her way out of the hotel and into the cold night air. Amidst the sounds of nocturnal animals and rustling trees she could hear the faint hoofsteps of a pony walking away.

“Ditzy wait!”

The steps stopped.

“I still like muffins better,” the grey pegasus giggled as they sat outside a restaurant sharing the box of cupcakes.

“Of course you do,” Scratch laughed. She had missed Ditzy ever since that day at the orphanage. “So, who adopted you?”

“I wasn’t adopted,” Ditzy stated, confusion in her voice.

“Not adopted?” Scratch was shocked. “But Puffeltop said you were.”

“Nope,” Ditzy shook her head and started eating another cupcake, “I was sent to the small orphanage they had here. It was only me and two other foals but I still had fun!”

Scratch was horrified. Puffeltop lied and sent her only friend, her little sister, away just to get revenge for Scratch’s pranks. She could feel all the hate and anger that had faded since her painful years at the orphanage started to return in fiery waves.

“Please don’t be angry,” Ditzy pleaded “I have a daughter, so everything worked out in the end. Even if I didn’t have a family when I was little-”

“You did have a family!” Scratch slammed her hoof onto the table spilling the box of cupcakes onto the ground. “I was your family! You were my little sister and I loved you.”

Scratch could feel the the anger form into tears as Ditzy stared sadly at her friend, her usually crossed eyes focusing on the glistening tears. Scratch wiped her eyes, and smiled.

“So, you have a daughter?” She asked with a laugh, “What is her name?”

Ditzy seemed happy with the topic change.

“Yep,” the pegasus beamed, “I named her Dinky!”

Scratch shook her head and chuckled at the odd name that Ditzy had chosen for her daughter.

“Who adopted you?” Ditzy asked.

“A family of rich musicians,” Scratch laughed. “And now I am one.”

“Wow,” Ditzy’s eyes bulged. “I wish that happened to me. I’m just a mail mare.”

Scratch was afraid that she had made Ditzy feel insignificant compared to her success.

“You are happy with your life right?” Scratch asked slowly.

“I love my life!” the pegasus squealed. There was an odd tone int Ditzy's voice but Scratch didn't dwell on it, instead she felt relieved that Ditzy wasn't belittled by her statements.

“I just can't believe that after all of these years you are still that happy little pegasus that is afraid of lightning.”

“I’m not afraid of lightning,” Ditzy said smiling widely. “I love lightning now! But the weather ponies don’t let me help them.”

“Still clumsy and silly as ever? Well, I am glad that you are happy!”

No answer.

“What’s wrong?”

Still no answer.

“Are ponies still giving you a hard time?”

After a long pause Ditzy replied.

“I lied,” she said quietly.

“What do you mean you lied?”

“I am not happy,” Ditzy continued. “Every day I go around smiling, ignoring the stares and whispers. I am sad for Dinky, having to live with a clumsy, cross-eyed mother that nopony trusts with anything. She looks up to me, a pony that doesn’t deserve to be looked up to.”

Scratch listened to her friend, surprised over the unknown emotions that her pegasus friend had been hiding.

“If there is anything you need feel free to ask me,” Scratch placed her hoof on Ditzy’s shoulder.

“Thanks but you don’t have to do that,” Ditzy sniffed back her tears.

“Yes I do,” Scratch pressed.

“Why?”

“Because you are my little sister and I have been your family all along,” Scratch remembered what her father had said to her before they parted and she pointed to Ditzy’s heart, “I have always been with you little sis, right here.”

Ditzy stopped crying and smiled.

“You mean that?”

“I mean it.”

“Thank you big sister,” Ditzy jumped out of her seat and wrapped Scratch in a warm embrace.

Scratch hugged her back, tears welling up behind her glasses. It wasn’t fair that she had been lucky with how her life had turned out and Ditzy had been stepped over and mistreated even up to now. She was determined to change that.

“You will always be my little sister and I will always be there for you.”

Scratch felt the last hole in her heart heal as the tears started to well up again. She had more family than she had ever hoped for at the orphanage. Scratch was loved by so many ponies, more than the unicorn thought she deserved. Scratch decided on sharing it to others less fortunate and more deserving than herself, starting with Ditzy. She owed the world that much.
