Arrival
Imprisoned again… as she had been for nearly 900 years… she thinks… she lost count around year 847. Those dreaded Elements… she had lost to them again. Nightmare Moon sighed, though it is difficult to without any air. The moon is cold, hard, dry, void and desolate. She wasn’t that annoyed at getting imprisoned as she was being isolated… That was the most horrible and cruel punishment anypony could be sentenced with. The moon was far, but it was just close enough to see what goes on in the world. She sat there, silently watching the ponies as they played through the day, silently watching as time went on.
A thousand years is a long time… too long for anypony to bear. She almost completely lost the plot the first time is happened. She tried to breath in, her lungs expanded, but nothing went in. One of the things she missed most, not the land, not the ponies, but air… that simple luxury evaded her once and it is again. She yearns for it, to fill her soul with the air of the world.
A thousand years is a long time to wait… to think… Nightmare Moon has spent 2 thousand-year periods of isolation already. Though it took from her the air, the grass, and the life around her… it gave her time think. Not about anything in particular, just thinking. She’d let her mind wander around while her body was in a sub-conscious state. She avoided topics like revenge, jealousy, anger and hate… she’d already spent 1000 years on that, and look where that got her. No… she decided to think of other more useful things, emotions, isolation, time, magic, energy, dimensions… but the main things… forgiveness and love… two things she wished for, yearned for, longed for… to be forgiven by everyone and everypony, but mostly, Luna… The one she captured and used for her own evil wishes. The one she dragged up here and spent 1000 years plotting revenge with… against what? Celestia? The Elements? The entire equestrian population? She can’t remember, it doesn't matter anymore.
How long has it been? 700? 800? 950 years? She can’t remember. She hasn’t bothered to. She was too busy thinking. That was until she felt her magic slowly return to her. Her time is up, 1000 years in solitude, 1000 years in waiting… and 2000 years to make up for. Her magic is back… for what felt like the first time in 2000 years, she smiled, not an evil smile, a general, heart filled smile… She was ready to come back. So she did. Her horn glowed with midnight blue energy; she vanished in a dark purple haze and travelled in the direction back to her world… to her home… to Luna.
It worked, her magic worked, she rematerialized in the world. She realized something... she didn't need a host this time, she was her own pony, and with her new form completed, she sucked in. She breathed in through her muzzle; she felt her lungs fill with the air, glorious, glorious air. She exhaled, feeling the air rush out of her throat. It’s good to be back… She thought to herself, she looked down her new body, she was the same midnight black alicorn that is feared by many, but without the armor. She inhaled again, and then exhaled. She could’ve stayed like that for another thousand-year sentence and she couldn’t care less. Her mind felt a million times better with the newly acquired oxygen, as if a dreaded haze cleared from her mind. She sighed, she was glad she could do that again. She felt like a filly, she wanted to jump around and play in the long grass… to feel the grass on her fur, but now is not the time for herself. She had somepony to apologize to. She gave her wings an experimental flap, and she noticed how stiff they were. Not using them for a few thousand years would do that to you. She flapped them slowly a few more times, feeling the air around them, how the air rolled off her midnight black feathers. How she missed the air.
She chuckled. She flapped her wings hard as she lifted into the air. She had somewhere to go, and she wasn’t going to teleport; She wanted to savor the air. She followed her magic as it led her to Luna, it wasn’t going to be easy… but then again… neither was being trapped on the moon for two thousand years. She was her own pony, and she was going to make things right. She chuckled again, Oh it’s so good to be back…
Luna was holding night court as she felt like something was wrong. She felt a familiar presence leave and enter her night and the same time. She drew night court into an early close, on the basis that she had urgent royal duties to attend to, this was met with mixed results. They didn't matter to her at this moment in time... She had to get to her sister.
"Celestia! Sister!" Luna called out to her older sibling on the other side of the door to her sister's room.
"Luna?" Celestia opened the door with her telekinetic grip, allowing the royal sun monarch to see her distressed sister.
"Celestia, please tell u- me... you felt it to." Luna hoped.
"Felt what, sister?" Celestia inquired her troubled younger sister.
"Something entered and left ou- my... night at the same time... I think..." Luna faltered, "I think She is back..."
"What?" Celestia's calm demeanor faltered by a bit.
"The Nightmare is back."
Celestia's calm smile was replaced by a frown, "I will be back." With a blinding flash of yellow light she disappeared.
The Nightmare was quite enjoying her flight to her destination, she wasn't rushed, she wasn't hurried... she just flew. She felt and savored the glorious air around the feathers of her glorious wings. A smile came across her lips as she closed her eyes, allowing the wind to flow around her ears and starry mane. However, her flight was interrupted by the thunderous clap of a violent teleportation spell. The Nightmare sighed again, wow, it feels so great to be able to do that properly. The Nightmare landed gracefully on the grass.
"Nightmare!" The voice of her old foe rang from behind her.
Nightmare stopped and cleared her throat, "Celestia." she simply said.
"What are you doing back here?" Came the angry voice of the day.
The nightmare shrugged, "A thousand years are up. I'm back, do you know where your sister is at this hour?"
Celestia's wings flared, "What do you want with Luna?"
Nightmare turned to face her old enemy, she smiled a happy smile "To apologize of course."
"If you dare tou-" Celestia faltered as she realized what her enemy said, "What?"
"To apologize." She simply restated.
Celestia was stunned, her wings started the drop from her stance.
"I want to apologize to your sister." She approached the monarch of the day slowly as she elaborated, "I need to apologize to her for wrongfully taking her will, I need to apologize to her for using her emotions against her, I need to apologize to her for filling her mind with hate for a thousand years and I need to apologize to your little ponies for the horror I've caused." She stopped a ponies' length from Celestia, her smile now a frown cause from memories of what she had done, "I'm sorry for causing you to rule alone for a thousand years." The Nightmare's head was facing the ground, "I'm sorry..."
Celestia was in disbelief... The Nightmare, the harbinger of doom, her enemy was apologizing to her.
The Nightmare continued regardless, "... Who am I kidding? You can't believe me... This was stupid to begin with... Just make sure you retell Luna of my apology." Her horn ignited with her midnight magic, she looked up to Celestia with a defeated smile, a solitary tear running down her cheek, "I guess I'll save you the annoyance of finding the Elements a third time."
Celestia recognized the spell she was about to cast, she should know, she used it once before, "Wait!" Celestia called after her old enemy before the spell was cast. The Nightmare looked up to signal she was listening as she halted the spell.
"Maybe you should take this up with Luna, before you banish yourself." Came Celestia's robotic reply to her previous exclamation. The Nightmare smiled as she dissipated the magical aura, Celestia smiled back, "We aren't that far away from Canterlot now, maybe we should teleport to save time?"
"No, I'd prefer it if I flew." The Nightmare slowly took off again, Celestia followed.
"Why?" Celestia asked.
The Nightmare thought for a moment as she flew across Equestria, "Because I've missed it."
