Quite Not in Mind

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Celestia contemplated that land that extended towards the horizon from her private balcony in Canterlot. She stared at nothing, but her eyes told that her mind was focused. Steps were then heard approaching the room where she was.

“Sister, may I come in?” spoke a voice behind the door.

“Yes, come in,” said a soft voice, “You are always welcome.”

The door opened and a midnight blue alicorn came walking in. She stopped at the middle of the room. “Greetings, sister. What are you doing here; I thought you have matters to attend today?”

“I postponed them for tomorrow.” She turned her head towards Luna. “Is that the only thing that brings you here?”

“No sister, I have been noticing your general lack of interest lately. I can feel it, is something troubling you?”

“No Luna, I am fine” she said evading her sister’s eyes. “The sky is beautiful before sunset, isn’t it? Its meaning and the memories it brings back is overwhelming.”

“Sister… I don’t think eluding questions is necessary.”

“I have become tired of holding those courts and assisting the same celebrations; you know it is always the same,” Celestia replied.

“I am bored of those too, sister, but you had at least been present in them last year. I wouldn’t be worried only because you have stopped assisting those. You seem more reclusive than you used to be, you spend less time with anypony. I am concerned”

She chuckled. “Then, perhaps I am getting too old to do such things.”

“One hundred years of administration have been too much for you, don’t they?” Luna joked, trying to smooth the mood of the conversation.

“You can’t imagine, Luna. Each time the same things are exposed, and attending the truly important situations doesn’t make the task easier. ” She looked again to the horizon and suspired. “Besides, I haven’t feeling fine as of late; I am heavily considering what I told you some months ago” She smiled weakly.

Luna‘s smile was gone. There was a sudden change of mood in the conversation as the air seemed to stop, like if it was being retained by an invisible barrier. Luna frowned and said, “Is not possible and is not right of you to believe or even think of that, sister.”

“Time will say if I am right or not.” She stated calmly.

“It is not that you can heedlessly leave Equestria die.”

“That is evident Luna; I just can’t abandon my dear subjects. I am just wondering what would happen if they are taken away from me without options to save them.”

“Sister, living with you all this time has taught me that you aren’t strong enough to let things happen by themselves, especially if you see them coming.”

There was a pause, a tense silence. Celesta’s body stayed firm, her eyes seemed lost, and her muzzle shut.

“Are you even hearing me? Celestia, please explain yourself.”

Celestia cleared her throat and said with a weary voice, “Precisely Luna, that’s why we must stop the—” She stopped mid sentence, trembling. Luna noticed and asked if she was right, that if she wanted to rest. Celestia didn’t respond, she was mumbling. Her trembling was getting worse and suddenly the whole room glowed in a slight yellow aura.

Luna didn’t know what to do. “Celestia, what is going on?”

Celestia was stuck on the same words. “That why —” She couldn’t finish the sentence. Her next move was to merely let herself collapse. The room shook in response.
The air seemed to flow again, accompanied by the yelling regal voice of a princess calling for assistance.

---Quite not in mind---

“I placed the apple right were you wanted, Twilight.”

“Thanks Spike.” Twilight said as she read through a book. “I might get this nailed down, finally.”

“I hope so, I don’t want to clean apple pudding for the tenth time.”

Twilight grimaced and laid her book down. “You don’t have to count the times we failed,” she said, “I am now sure what was going wrong. We will be successful this time!”

“Really?”

Twilight nodded. “Yes. Now time to try again.”

An apple quite far away from the library started to glow. Located over a rock, distant from any houses, no one noticed its sudden disappearance with a loud pop. Back at the library, the same apple started to materialize in front of the unicorn’s eyes. “Yes!” Twilight said enthusiastically. But as time progressed the apple stayed uncooperative, fading in and out, not letting itself to be teleported. “No, not this time,” she commanded the fruit, focusing more power to accomplish the task.

For a lengthy moment —more than the expected to teleport an apple— Twilight had her eyes fixated on the apple, performing the spell in what seemed control of the situation. Despite her exhaustion, it looked like she would have the fruit reaching its destination safely. Just a bit more, she believed, the reason why this apparently simple ‘bring home’ spell was so consuming was unknown to her.

Drops of sweat started to form in her face. The longer this took, the harder was to concentrate. A subtle thought distracted her; it was obvious this wasn’t going properly. Light beams radiated from the apple started to fill the room profusely, reinforcing the idea of failure. Too much effort was being put on this triviality to just give up.

It was about five minutes now. Spike just watched in worry, expecting worse results than before “Twilight, I think you should stop” he said, but Twilight wasn’t listening she was convinced she was about to complete the spell. In the meantime of the eyes on the apple and the apple on the air, a deep rumble echoed in the library. “Please Twi—” was the only thing Spike could say when all of sudden the ground beneath the library shook violently. For ten seconds the furniture moved around the library, leaving many objects on the floor. The shaking left Spike on the floor and almost threw off balance Twilight.

“Oh great, what was that now?” Twilight said before looking again at the apple.

The fruit had started to inflate while she was distracted. It seemed to change size chaotically, emitting sparks and rays while doing so. Panicking, she fruitlessly tried to stabilize the teleportation. “Don’t burst please,” she said as the apple prepared to burst, ignoring her plead. Knowing what was going to occur she instinctively closed her eyes.
Within half a second there was an explosion; the apple was replaced by splatter all around the library. Red stains covered books, shelves, walls, ponies and a dragon. With her hopes crushed, she reluctantly asked, “Spike, could you bring the mop and the bucket please?”

Spike remained silent.

A thud was heard. “Spike, I don’t like when you make me angry on purpose, especially after this,” Twilight uttered, unwilling to see the disaster caused.

“Umm Twilight…” he said, “I think you should see what is in front of you”

She cleaned her face from the eleventh failure’s remainders and opened her eyes without acknowledging what was just in front of her. “Please help me to clean this up, we need to try again because I promised the—” She nearly bumped into something. Laying unconsciously, a big white pony with red mane was in front of her. It wasn’t the fact that a pony suddenly appeared in her library what shocked her; it was rather the fact that the pony had both horn and wings. She stood in stupefaction awhile before she could form a phrase. “What did just happen?” she asked.

“I have no idea, I opened my eyes and she was here. Do you know who is this pony?”

“I have never seen anypony remotely resembling her,” she said, shame visible on her face, “I messed it up badly.”

“So what will we do?” he said approaching the pony in question. “Huh… she seems to be sleeping.”

“I think I would rather write a letter to the princess; for now, Spike, let’s clean this mess”

“This again…”

Several minutes later, with most of the apple cleaned, they stood in front the sleeping alicorn. They faced each other, sharing a moment of awkward silence. They exchanged sights, expecting the other one to talk. Spike took a step forward and said, “Should we wake her?”

“I’m not sure Spike, I don’t think she would be happy.”

“She will wake up anyways”

“I know, but look her. She is an alicorn. We knocked out an alicorn of all… and teleported her far away where she was. I have never heard of her, neither read about her on books; she could get angry and who knows what would proceed. This isn’t simply right, this shouldn’t have happened.”

“Twilight, you always are over-pessimistic, every time portraying the worst scenario. I take that we will let her rest until she decides to get up, isn’t it?”

“It is the most appropriate thing to do, I don’t have more ideas,” Twilight explained, “I guess she will wake up tomorrow, it is getting late.” She picked up the book titled ‘Selected teleportation techniques’ and observed it. “I should study the probable reasons of this misfire, I thought I had read carefully each section. Every single section that explained every single outcome,” she exclaimed, “I must ask the princess. I hope she doesn’t gets angry.”

They both headed to their bedroom. The alicorn was left resting on the floor of the main room, owing to the fear of disrupting her sleep and likely provoking her anger. They had no clue on the pony’s power or temper. It was also because this Twilight pondered putting up a barrier surrounding her but something in the pony’s expression inspired trust and made her ignore the risk of having a stranger in home motivating her. Perhaps she was being delusional, but holding anypony against his or her will was something to condemn. Tomorrow they will most likely have addressed the circumstances.
“Time to research” she said as she lighted a few candles, the night was more than enough time for a talented unicorn to find an answer.

A night is not enough to decipher certain conundrums. Even with above average skill, work winds up quickly when one is lost on one’s mind, thus making the hours long night to pass in a wink. The clock indicated 4 am. By now Twilight had read the book almost twice, without revelation. She needed to rest urgently in order to think properly, but the responsibility for her acts kept her awake, even if she hadn’t slept well the whole week.

“Absolutely Nothing,” she ranted, “I am blocked, three nights without sleep is too much,” Twilight said. Not bearing the fatigue , Twilight got on her bed… and watched mindlessly the ceiling for some time. She softened her pillow, counted sheep, closed her eyes and things remained the same. She noticed that sleep was evading her. She wanted to get some well deserved rest but she couldn’t avoid feeling anxious, like if she had forgotten something important. She looked again at the ceiling and saw the little sun and moon image painted there.

“The letter!” she recalled.

Quietly, Twilight moved through the library and fetched a paper scroll, a quill and some ink; carefully maneuvering to avoid waking up anyone, and checking if everything was in place. Back in her room she sat on her bed and started to write.

Dear Princess Celestia:

I am pleased to write you again. You might be wondering why you received two letters this day. The fact is, princess, is that I was practicing one spell that came on one book of the batch that we received past week, until an interruption broke its progress.

Circumstances started to arise even before when I tried to do that particular spell of the tome titled ‘Selected teleportation techniques.’ It is the one named long distance matter relocation. At a first glance it seemed relatively simple, but as I tried several times to perform it revealed itself to be very hard and taxing to do.

I had no reason to compose this letter until the eleventh attempt, when I was unexpectedly interrupted while performing the spell. I can’t exactly recall what happened in those moments as I was concentrated on regaining control. I thought I had every predictable outcome covered, but I was wrong, I failed. The library was covered in apple. But most importantly: a mare, apparently unharmed, was teleported to my library. Her appearance shocked me. I decided to write you, princess, because I think you should come and see by yourself. I can’t exactly explain how or why, but there is a sleeping alicorn in my living room.

I’m terribly sorry for all trouble caused.

Your Faithful Student:

Twilight Sparkle.
