"C'mon you little space rock, time to get up!" called a voice from the other side of the universe. Suddenly a splash of sun beams blinded the young white pegasus as he rolled out of bed. A whip of rainbow snapped at his mark-less flank as his mother Rainbow Dash called his full name, "Comet Fire, get. Out. Of. Bed! You'll be late for your first day of school!"
The foal sprang into life as he shook the sleep out of his head. He blinked and grabbed his glasses from the side table, then rocketed past Dash and into the washroom. Dash trotted up behind him to comb his red and orange mane while he talked through a tooth brush. "Tho if ai can't fflah yeth, won the othferth make fun ofth me?" Rainbow sighed, "What? Fly? Comet, you're still a foal. Give it time sweetie. I'll tell ya a secret. Come'ere."
Comet leaned over to Rainbow, tooth paste dripping from his lips as his mother whispered into his ear, "It took Auntie Scoots years to learn to fly, why do you think all the pictures of her childhood have her scooter in them?"
The foal's eyes widened in surprise, then faded away as he spit and dove into his mom's chest for a hug.
"BYE MOM, BYE DAD!" Comet cried as bolted out the front door of their home in the center of Ponyville. A well built red stallion with an orange mane stepped out a bedroom door as Rainbow Dash stood at the front, waving good bye.
"He's going to be fine, right?", she asked nervously.
"Eeyup." came the confident reply.
"God I love you" Rainbow muttered in a breathe as she led the stallion back into the bedroom, a mischievous grin on her face.

Comet broke through the threshold of his home, little wings spread in a mock glide, and crashed headlong into a small golden filly standing at the door, hoof held up ready to knock.
"Sunny! I totally forgot!"
Sunny Sparkle, the golden maned unicorn with a dandelion coat giggled as she clambered to her feet, her tail, reminiscent of fluffy sunshine brushed Comet's face as she turned towards the school house. His orange eyes lingered on her as he trotted to catch up.
"So Comet," Sunny began, "All summer on the family farm and still no cutie mark?"
"Nope, and I still can't fly neither. I'm starting to think I'm never gonna get it."
"Hey now Comet, being related to Applejack you should know this the best. You'll get it eventually, I mean, just look at the Cutie Mark Crusaders! All grown up and they're still trying!"
"I get what you're trying to say, but it's not helping."
"Fiiiiiine, but at least pretend to be happy today! It's the first day at school and we don't know anypony there. So let me see a Sunny approved smile on that face!"
He put on his best fake smile.
"Perfect! I can almost feel the warmth shining from it!" His smile became real. "Now, if we don't hurry we're going to be late, and I'll blame you for it FOREEVVER. So," Sunny considered him suspiciously, "how about a race?"
"Oh? You know you can't beat me, why even try?" he countered proudly.
"I'm not completely helpless you know, we spent the whole summer apart and I learned a few tricks."
"Fine then, on your count"
"Ok, 3..
2..
GO!"
"HEY, cheater!"
"I thought you said I couldn't beat you?" Sunny called back, taunting him.
His pride getting the better of him, Comet tried flapping his wings. But still, nothing happened. Sunny's horn began to glow, her hair melting together, sparks of light coalescing into tiny stars along her celestial mane and tail.
No.
Bucking.
Way.
Sunny floated off the ground while her hair, reminiscent of the princess', swirled around her body and lifted her into the sky. Comet's jaw could have hit the ground. That is, if he were standing on it. Without even realizing what he was doing his wings carried his slack body after her. His glasses slipped off his snout and without a second glance he rose to meet her.
He could see her. The celestial mane and tail were perfectly visible through the fog that permeated his vision.
She glanced back at the spot on the ground he should have been at, then did a double take as she noticed him in the air, soaring after her. Twirling in the air towards him she let out a laugh that could calm a hydra and embraced him.
"You're welcome" she whispered.
"But.... how... wha... are you a ..." gasped Coment as he struggled to comprehend the last ten seconds of his life.
"I told you I learned a few tricks, and some of those directly from Celestia herself. You spent all summer on an apple orchard, but I got to spend all summer with my mother's teacher and mentor."
"That's incredible, you're incredible!"
"In case you haven't noticed, you are flying."
"I.. I am? HAHA OH DEAR CELESTIA THANK YOU!" He cried out as he wrapped Sunny in a second hug. She giggled, that soft, warm, fluffy giggle that washed your troubles away and hugged back. Neither wanted to let go. That is, until they noticed Cherilee standing just below them.
"Congratulations Comet! I'm so happy for you! And you Sunny! How about you show your new talents to the others in class?"
The pair landed and broke their hug, Comet's wings flapping enthusiastically as he retrieved his glasses and the three trotted to the school house.

"All right students, it's time for recess!" Cherilee called. Every filly and foal in the room jumped from their desk. Comet Fire stood on top of his desk and Sunny pronounced in a magically enhanced voice, "ATTENTION EVERYPONY, MAY I DIRECT YOU TO OUR PROUD NEW FLYER, COMET FIRE !!"
Comet hopped from desk to desk, flapping his wings and building speed, until after the third one he sprang into the air and flittered around the room. The class cheered as the few other pegasususus who had already learned to fly took wing. Sunny joined them using the same spell as before. She glided in front of Comet as he struggled to keep up, still learning his limits.
After a few minutes a bored looking earth pony shouted "Do a barrel roll!"
The little foal took this as a challenge and rolled. Straight into a wall. Which exploded. The wooden schoolhouse collapsed on top of them as it caught fire. The fillies and foals who could pulled themselves out while nearby mares and stallions rushed in to pull the injured and crying to safety. Cherilee limped out of the rubble nursing a broken front leg.

As Comet came to he pulled himself out from under a 2x4 and stared at a wall of gray. He looked to the ground and felt around for his glasses. After digging through the dust he found them, not a scratch on the lenses. Comet turned left, then right, then up. The walls of a crater towered above him. The foal crested the crater and rolled down to the crowd. With his ears still ringing he stopped on his back as his face turned to the sky.
The bright afternoon had turned black as the sky filled with countless golden orbs of fire. The orbs left long streaks of light as they fell to the ground, crushing the homes and ponies beneath them.
Alarms across Ponyville went off as homes and shops were struck by the falling, burning rock. The sky turned a threatening shade of red as the fire storm intensified. Pegasus ponies could be seen across Equestria trying to gather rain clouds to quench the infernos raging across towns and the Everfree forest. Unicorns used their magic to gather moisture from the air, and Earth ponies formed bucket lines.
Those not in the fire effort were rounding up all the older and younger ponies.
Ponies were screaming in the streets as they were burned alive, some quickly silenced as they were struck again and again by the burning rocks falling from the sky. Through the panic a familiar voice was calling "Comet! COMET!"
He rushed through the crowd towards the voice and bumped into Rainbow who had an unconscious and limp Sunny draped across her back. Comet buried his face against Dash and tried to hold back tears. His shaking awoke Sunny who stirred and looked towards him. Their eyes met and she smiled in an attempt to calm her friend, then looked past him.
"... oh no..."
All three, stunned silent, stared helplessly above them as the burning clouds parted over Canterlot to reveal a giant burning comet the size of a small moon rushing towards the cliff side castle. A bright green and pink sphere appeared in the sky, then a smaller deep blue next to it. The princesses, Luna and Celestia, their shield spells at full, rushed towards the great ball of fire in the hopes of saving Equestria. As they collided with the falling swirl of flames they were forced back, the massive rock just too much. Then, as the meteor forced its way down, a dark flash of magic swarmed around the deep blue orb, turning it into the darkest blue, almost black. The night orb swelled to match the day, and they slowed the meteor.
"Nightmare Moon..." reminisced Rainbow.
The two celestial Goddess' shields slowed the comet, but still could not hold it off.
"It's time to go." urged Rainbow. "We have to get to the shelters."
"Shelters?" questioned Sunny, " Why are there shelters?"
Rainbow replied, "When you're older, if you're older, you'll understand why there hasn't been a war. Why the griffons and zebras and ponies keep to themselves."
"But how is..."
"Not now, just run! Macintosh Sugercube Corner, GO!"
As they flew and ran through the streets they passed burning bodies, the stench of cooked meat making them sick. Blood spattered the walls from the ponies that were fortunate enough to be put out of their misery. Screams surrounded them, frantic calls for help. In the distance they could see the Goddesses shields begin to flicker, as if the hope of saving their friends and families was slowly draining from them.
A flash, and a great purple orb came into existence below them as the meteor plowed into the cliff side. It levitated up to join the already struggling Princesses, then orange, white, yellow, and pink shield orbs appeared alongside it.
"They need me." Thought Rainbow Dash aloud.
"What?!" cried Comet, "So do we!"
Rainbow turned on Comet and grasped his face in her hooves.
"I'm not abandoning you. I'd never leave you. I'd never leave any of you. Now go, get to the ark. Your father is there waiting for you."
"Mom, I.... I don't want to go without you. I don't think I can."
"All of Equestria, maybe even the world needs me right now. My friends, my family, you. But right now Sunny needs you. She needs someone to be strong for her. To be strong with her."
"I... I'll do my best..."
"Good, now get your flank moving like I told you to! Or so help me, I'll send you to the moon myself!"
Comet turned to go, pulling the shocked Sunny with a wing, and looked back just in time to see the tail end of his mother's rainbow trail.
"Bye mom, I love you." he thought to himself, praying to the Goddesses to see his family safe again. Then he prayed for the Goddesses, for the Elements of Harmony, for the world.

The two friends sprinted through the streets of Ponyville, dodging the falling balls of... well... comet fire. The world dripping in a darkness so profound it put Nightmare Moon's threat of eternal night to shame. The only reason anypony could see was the burning buildings and bodies that littered the roads. Yet these fires seemed to add to the darkness. They cast no shadows, radiated no light. Everything beyond the unnatural red flame's flickering edge was a smoke choked shadow.
Sunny poured her magic into her horn, using the overglow as a search light. What they saw almost made her extinguish the magic.
Ponies held their dead or dying loved ones as they bleed out, limbs or chunks of their bodies torn completely away by the falling rock. Charred bodies lay abandoned, some still smoking. Screams for help were barely audible over the roar of fire from many buildings. Screams that went ignored and were soon silenced. Sunny's light passed over a familiar wall eyed grey pony crouched over a small pile of charred ashes, intermittently nuzzling it while uttering a mixture of "Muffin...?" and "Ow..."
As they turned away from the gruesome sight a meteor slammed to the ground in front of them, knocking the three into a wall.
Comet found his glasses again. The left lense was missing. With no time to look for it the two children struggled through the debris.
Derpy didn't.
They kept running.

((writere's blood alcohol continent is alot)
Finally they reached Sugarcube Corner, only to find it empty. No Mr. and Mrs. Cake, no crowd of ponies jockeying for a spot in the ark, no Big Macintosh to lead them to it. And it was quiet. Either the ponies screaming for help or mercy had given up or they were already dead. They glanced towards the struggle between the giant meteor and gravity and the eight mighty ponies sacrificing themselves for the fate of the world. The meteor had fallen even more, now crushing the top spires of Canterlot like a child crushes an empty sarsaparilla can. The shield orbs had shrunk and both the white and yellow ones were gone. Comet tried to distract them both from the tragedy, "Sunny, help me find the ark. There's gotta be some kind of switch or door or something around here."
They scoured the shop, then finding nothing they searched the house upstairs.
"Knowing auntie Pinkie and her gift with gizmos, it could be anything!" complained Sunny.
Comet sighed as he checked a bookcase. He noticed a pink book with a title that read
In Case of Emergency, Pull Here!
Of course....
The foal jumped up to reach the lever and pulled, his teeth getting caught in the binding as he hung from the book case. Even through the nightmare outside Sunny managed a soft giggle, intoxicating Comet as he dropped to the floor and joined her. A metallic crunch echoed from downstairs. Then the world erupted.
Windows shattered as the ponies and other assorted items were thrown to the floor, then bucked to the ceiling and slammed to the floor again, tumbling through the weakened wood to the shop below. Sunny shook herself clean of dust and debris and stumbled to the front door for air. Her heart almost gave out at what she saw.
Canterlot had fallen. The villages underneath the cliff face crushed. Millions of ponies were gone, and all but one of the orbs remained. The Sun Goddess stood alone, her shield now only the size of a several story building and rapidly disintegrating along with any hope of saving Equestria. Sunny collapsed at the door, heartbroken and withered. Long past the point of crying she just curled up in the dirt. The raw joy that seemed to radiate from her sunny disposition now gone, her coat draining of color.
Comet finally came to and, shaking off the dirt and bowl hanging from his head, trotted to Sunny. He ignored the horrors outside, the loss of friends... of family. His eyes locked onto Sunny's as he picked her up in his wings and rushed her down into the basement. Her eyes showed the deepest despair as he bucked open the door to the ark, only as big as the building above once was. Magically infused steel... barrels?.... lined the walls. He carried his friend to the closest one and, unsure of what to do, touched her horn to the surface. A spark flashed between them and a cheery voice perked up out of nowhere.
"Welcome, Sunny Sparkle! Since you're here it means the world is ending! Or... you're just really good at hide and seek and found your way into my basement. If that's what happened, you should really go find somewhere else to hide. If not, then just step inside and have a nice holocaust!"
Comet gently eased Sunny onto the small medical cot inside. Her eyes, soulless husks of what they once were, stared back at him.
"I'll never leave you."
Sunny's eyes slowly opened, a small light sparking deep inside. As Comet walked solemnly to the pod directly across color flooded Sunny's coat. As he tapped the pod with his hoof the pod behind him closed. He stepped in and as it closed around him he could see Sunny standing at the window of hers.
She touched her horn to the glass and a golden light flowed out, etching a large heart into it. She touched it, and the magic stained the golden heart into the glass. The two ponies stared into each other's eyes as the pods magically attached medical equipment to them and Pinkie's lighthearted voice called out to them:
"Have a happy holocaust!"
As the young ponies' consciences faded away the world fell apart outside the protection of the ARK.

So there's chapter 1. I started this a few months back when I was bored at work. I hated it with a passion. So I decided to fix it up.
Still don't like it, but with what I changed and added it seems....
Decent.
Hope you enjoyed reading it more than I did!
PLEASE let me know what you think in the comments, I love feedback and it can only help me get better. Celestia knows I need it...
