Chapter 8: The Pain Of Spoken Words

Previous Chapter

Rainbow opened the door to the library an hour later and was bombarded with questions the moment she stepped her foot in.

"What took you so long?!" Twilight shouted.

"Are you okay?" Fluttershy asked meekly.

"You look a bit flustered, dear, are you alright?" Rarity worried.

"Did you give her the ol' razzle dazzle?!" Pinkie shouted.

Rainbow blinked at the sudden barrage of questions. "I'm fine." She smiled. "Great even."

“Something happened!” Pinkie gasped, pointing to her. “I know it! I know it! Spill it!” She goated.

Rainbow shrugged. “Nothing happened. I stormed out on my mom and told her to stay out of my life.” For some reason her shoulders slumped, and she suddenly felt guilty. Firefly wasn’t the best mother in the world, that was for sure, but she was still a mother. The only mother Dash had.

Everyone’s faces fell.

“Oh dear,” Rarity said, putting a hand over her mouth. “Are you alright, darling?”

Rainbow snorted. “Yeah. I’m cool. I mean, she’s caused nothing but trouble for me, am I right? I’m glad I’ll never see her again. I don’t even feel sorry for saying what I said.” There was a pain in Rainbow’s chest, but she quickly ignored it. Forcing herself to smile, she said, “So, who’s up for a trip to Cloudsdale?!”

Twilight gave her a confused look. “Not that I’d ever pass up a trip to Cloudsdale, but uh, what exactly are we going there for?” She asked, with her head tilted.

“Soarin invited us to watch him and the rest of the Bolts run in the semi-finals for the Championship.” Rainbow said proudly, her eyes lighting up with excitement.

“Ooooh, so that’s what took you so long!” Pinkie giggled. “You were with Soarin!”

“The Wonderbolt~!” Everyone else chimed in, making kissy faces.

Rainbow laughed nervously, blushing a bit. “C’mon guys, it was nothing like that.” She assured them. “I kinda just ran into him after I stormed out of the bar. Literally.” And she was glad for it too, because she actually felt a lot better than she did a few hours ago.

“Didja show him your Double Rainbooms?!” Pinkie asked, “Or did you just flash him with your awesome bra?!” She added, some how teleporting behind the other girl, squeezing at her breasts.

“Hey, cut it out!” Dash barked, swatting her hands away.

“I read in one of those sports magazines that he likes busty women. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?” Rarity asked her with a sly smile.

Rainbow stood at attention. “N-No! I wouldn’t know anything about that!” She answered quickly, her tan face heating up. “I didn’t even know that until you just told me!”

“Really now?” Applejack asked, developing a smirk identical to Rarity’s. “If you know nothin’ bout what Rares is sayin’,” She approached Rainbow and examined her closely, making the other girl jump. Her grin widened. “Why are yer lips swollen?”

“T-They're not swollen! Y-You’re just imagining things!” Rainbow insisted, covering her mouth. She squeaked when she saw that the other girls had begun to crowd around her for a better look.

“Oh yes,” Rarity agreed with a knowing look. “That’s definitely the work of a long make out session.”

Twilight giggled. “No wonder you were so happy when you got back!”

Rainbow gulped. There was no way she was getting out of this now. “Fine, fine we kissed.” She grumbled. She covered her ears as the girls around her started to squeal.

Rarity clapped her hands. “Oh Rainbow Dash, that’s wonderful! Are you two an item now?”

Pinkie wiped a tear from her eye. “Look at our little Dashie, growing up so fast!” She sobbed, blowing into a handkerchief she produced out of nowhere. She gasped. “You know what this calls for?!”

Applejack pinched the bridge of her nose. “Ah swear to Faust, if you say a party, Pinkie-”

“A party!” Pinkie shouted, opening a party popper that let out way too much confetti for such a tiny thing.

“Pinkie!” Twilight groaned. “This is gonna take me and Spike forever to clean up!” She waved her hands at the mess surrounding them. “Why is it always parties with you?!”

“Cause, parties are fun! You need to lighten up, Twilight! Stop being such a grumpy bumpy!” Pinkie tapped the taller girl on the nose while making a little *boop* sound. “Besides, I think Dashie deserves it, since she’s been all rain clouds all day!”

Rainbow shook her head. “Nah, it’s fine, Pinks. Actually, the last thing I need right now is a party. I think I’m just gonna go home and get some sleep ya know? We leave for Cloudsdale tomorrow and I kinda wanna get up on time. I’ll see you guys later, alright?” She waved to her friends weakly before walking out the door.

“Oh my,” Fluttershy mumbled. “I don’t think things went so well with Rainbow and her mother.”

“Well she did tell her that she wanted her to stay out of her life forever. When you tell people those kinds of things it does kind of hurt both of you in the process.” Twilight reminded the meek girl.

Pinkie’s usual smile was an unsure scowl, and she was rubbing her arm as if she was uncertain if she could say what she wanted to say. “Well...I told my parents that I hated them when I moved out...” She confessed, barely loud enough for anyone to hear. It was so quiet, it actually rivaled Fluttershy’s smallest voice.

“What?!” Everyone said in unison, turning to her.

She jumped from having the attention suddenly on her since she had assumed that no one had heard her. "Yeah, I mean, I used to get beat a lot. Maud used to step in for me and stuff but then she’d get beat too.” Pinkie paused. “And when I turned eighteen I just kind of got sick of it and decided to leave. The last thing I said to them was ‘I never wanna see you again.’”

Rarity’s eyebrows shot up. “Well, I must say we are definitely learning some interesting things about each other today. Anyone else like to share any traumatic childhood stories?” She looked around at everyone else who just shrugged.

“I don’t believe Rainbow really wants her mom out of her life,” Fluttershy murmured. “I think right now she’s hurting, and she acted on impulse. Dash has always been the type to say something before she’s really thought it through. I’m not saying it excuses the way that Firefly has treated her, but you all saw the pain in her eyes. She really loves her mother.”

Applejack nodded. “Fluttershy’s right. Though Ah don’t think we should be discussin’ somethin’ like this right now ya know? It feels kinda disrespectful to be talkin’ about somethin’ like this when RD ain’t present.”

Twilight nodded her head too. “Applejack’s right. Let’s all just get some shut eye and hope for the best. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.”
