The First Song

Chapter 1: The only chapter

The only chapter

Electric Mane looked at all the dancing ponies. She longed to be one of them, but instead she had to sit by the record, making sure the music got changed on time. She chose the job partially due to her not being able to find a dance partner, but mainly due to her not having a Cutie Mark. She was a blank flank, and nobody liked blank flanks.

Every once in a while, one of the school teachers would give her a pitying look, but Electric turned her head. She didn’t want pity. She didn’t quite know what she wanted. To attempt to dance would only embarrass her. Not dancing embarrassed her as well, but at least she had a readily available reason for not dancing.
To occupy herself, and to distract her from all the happy ponies, she looked at the grooves in the record. As they spun, they seemed to tell a tale. A tale of unchanging life; forever doomed to play the same song, over and over again. If she stared at it long enough without blinking, the grooves seemed to dance and sway. It gave her an idea.

Slowly, she put her front hoof on the record, stopping it. it stopped immediately, and all the ponies turned to look at her. One of the teachers began to walk slowly over to her, and she let go of the record. Quickly, she stopped it again. She made it go backwards, forwards, stop, start, stop, backwards, and so on and so forth. The chaos of it, the destruction of the original beat thrilled her. It was like creating something new out of the old. Briefly, she wondered if that was what Discord liked. Reusing the old to make something completely new. She was quickly ejected from the party by two earth ponies.

Although they seemed angry at her, she had had fun. She felt a slight tingling on her flank, so she looked down at it. No mark appeared. Electric didn’t care, it was the first time she had been in control for a long time, and was determined to do it again.

Galloping over to the local music store, she saw a pony known as Octavia.

“Hi Octavia. What’re you doing here?” Electric asked cheerfully. She liked Octavia, for both ponies appreciated music, although different types.

“Hello, Electric. I’m just picking up a record from my favorite composer, Ludwig Van Beethoofen. What are you doing here; I thought you liked to listen to music at clubs and such social places. I didn’t realize you even had a record player.”

“Well, I don’t. That’s not quite how I plan to use the record.”

Octavia widened her eyes, as if fearful that any record could be played without a record player. It just didn’t make sense.

“Well… Well how do you plan to use it?”

“You’ll see. It’ll be different, that’s for sure.”

Electric wandered off to get a record. Her eyes floated over the song names, until she found some she liked. One was called “Pony Rock Anthem”. The other one was just a steady bass note.

From her musical lessons, she knew that all records were slightly metallic, and thus were never to be around magnets. That was exactly what she planned to do. She purchased a board, weak motor, and magnetic tape.

Back at her home, she put it all together. She planned to put on a show that nopony would ever forget. A pair of purple glasses went over her eyes, and she set up her table on the rooftop, as well as two very large speakers.

The push of a button got the discs spinning, and she nervously waited for a crowd to gather. When about twenty ponies were there, she began to spin the discs on the magnetic tape, causing a warped sound. Faster and slower, backwards, full stops and quick repeats. These were her actions, and they caused a noise nopony had heard before.

The speed of her movements surprised even Electric. The sounds were like a symphony of different voices singing a different song that somehow turned out alright. The beat of the speakers blew her hair and rattled her glasses.

Quickly, without warning, she put another record on the other spinner. This one was just a very simple beat. It was a single low bass note played over and over again. It would provide a heavy beat to her music.

The combination of the two discs made her feel completely in control of everything. Here she was, playing two completely different musics in a form that nopony ever had before, and it was like the eye of a tornado. Adrenaline rushed through her. She moved faster than ever before, and the feeling was pure ecstasy.

Shouting and cheering ensued, and mobs went over to hear her play. Out in the back, she saw Octavia with a small smile on her face. A large tingling appeared on Electric’s flank, and the image of a note was on it.

After the music party, Octavia walked up to Electric.

“Wow, Electric! That was amazing, albeit odd. Nice Cutie Mark, by the way. It suits you.”

“Thanks. Also…”

“Yeah?”

“Please, call me Vinyl. My old life is over, and it is time to start again.”

“Well, Vinyl, you should try to play in more places.”

“You think?”

“Yeah. Granted, for slightly more formal events, you might want to have already prepared a piece, instead of creating it their. Ponies that attend formal events tend to like things like that. However, for less formal events, I think you should continue with what you just did. Maybe we can even play together one of these days.”

“Yeah, that would be awesome!”

Octavia walked away, and vinyl felt a smile creeping up her face. She had impressed Octavia, and that was an impressive feat.

As Vinyl cleaned up her equipment, she laughed. The day had started with her being very bored by a record, and had ended with her creating entirely new music with records. Odd, she thought, how things like that happen.
