Soarin' On A Rainbow (SOAR)
Chapter 2: Trouble On The Horizon?
Previous Chapter Next ChapterSoarin' sat at one of the many tables in the Wonderbolt's new vacation home's dining area, a fresh apple pie untouched infront of him on the wooden surface. He looked at it then turned his head gazing now at the open window a few feet away from him. He was looking in the sky for the messenger he sent earlier, but instead the sky was empty and void of any sign of life, only a few puffy clouds occupying the blue expanse of empty sky. He sighed, laying his head on the table next to the untouched pie.
"It's only been a few minutes...give him time..." Soarin' said to himself, gazing at the Wonderbolt suit on the pillow across from him.
"Please hurry..." he whispered, closing his eyes.
~At Rainbow Dash's House~
Rainbow Dash had stopped talking in mid-sentence to observe what the colt looked like fully. He had a blue and navy blue curly mane, with his coat being the pale whitish blue color like Soarin's coat. He had a brown bag that mail ponies would normally use, on his back, and a pair of Wonderbolt goggles on, giving Rainbow Dash the hint that he was, indeed, a Wonderbolt, because unlike the fake pairs of goggles with plastic lenses that were sold to the fans, these ones had glass lenses. Her nervous feeling started to creep up on her, and her thoughts started to work over time.
'Did I do something wrong? Oh no! What if I did? What if...they never let me join the team?!' Rainbow Dash thought in her head. She was snapped out of her thoughts when the Wonderbolt spoke up.
"You're Rainbow Dash, right?" He managed to pant out between breaths.
"What? Oh! Yeah, that's me, the fastest flier in all of Equestria!" Rainbow Dash said quickly, no matter how hard she tried to hide it, her nervousness was showing on her face.
"Yeah...Okay, well I have two letters for you..." He turns his head to the pack of mail and pulls out two scrolls with his mouth, and gives them to her.
She takes them and opens one placing the other on the white fluffy surface that was her cloud porch, knowing it wouldn't fall through. The colt was about to leave, but Rainbow Dash had a strange feeling she'd need to send a letter back in the future, so she set the letter in her hoof down, and called out to him.
"Hey, wait! What's your name?" Rainbow Dash yells up at him,
"High Winds, the Wonderbolt... Be seein' ya!" He nods to her before flying off in the direction of the giant cloud mass, that Dash assumed, was the Wonderbolt's new vacation spot. She shook her head, and picked up the letters in her mouth. She walked inside and sat the letters on her desk, right next to her own copy of Daring Do and the Griffon's Goblet. The desk, like most of the furniture, was made of light wood, and was made especially for her. Her cutie mark's outline indented into a drawer to her right. She sat on a pillow in front of the desk and started to read the opened letter first. The writing was easy to read, and was short, too.
The letter read:
'Dear Rainbow Dash,
Do you mind leaving the Wonderbolts alone for their vacation? Especially Soarin'. I mean he has been working really hard, and deserves some rest.
Thanks, Spitfire'
It also had a Wonderbolt's symbol next to Spitfire's name, but Rainbow Dash ignored it. Rainbow's ears laid themselves against her rainbow colored mane. Had she been bothering Soarin' the whole time? She shook that thought from her head and opened the other letter, which, like the other one, had a Wonderbolt symbol on it. This confused her a bit but she read on anyways. She first noticed this letter was a little less sloppy than Spitfire's, and longer, too.
The letter read:
'Dear Rainbow Dash,
If you read this after Spitfire's short letter, than you'll most likely be a bit more happy after reading this. I'm coming to Sugar Cube Corners to pick some food up tomorrow, then I will be heading to Sweet Apple Acres. I'd like you to meet me in the back fields just before sunset, so I can check on your wings. Wouldn't want a future member of the Wonderbolts to have her wings clipped, now would we?
See you then, Anonymously Anonymous'
Rainbow Dash's eyes widened like somepony's in a horror movie would after finding a dead body, but she told herself it'd be okay, and that it was just a quick wing-checkup. She wouldn't really be there for long, just a check up from...whoever, then she could head to Sugarcube Corners and sleep over in Pinkie's room with her other friends. Pinkie Pie had asked her a week or so before, and Dash, being the element of loyalty, told Pinkie she'd be there. She had a lot to do tomorrow, including the mysterious check up, Pinkie's cupcake sleepover, and, due to the fact tomorrow's weather called for clear skies, she also had to do her job.
She figured she'd go tell Pinkie about her plans and rest. She sat the letter on her desk, and went out the door. It was a clear, sunny day, and when Rainbow Dash looked down, all the ponies in Ponyville were enjoying it by either playing, flying, or having lunch with friends. Dash smiled and jumped down, with open wings. The wind hit her mane with a sudden blast, as she sped to her target location. She was heading to Sugar Cube Corners, more importantly, to Pinkie. She landed just outside the door, and went to open it just for the door to open itself and for somepony to bump into her and fall down.
"Umph..." Dash heard the small sound and looked down. There on the ground was the familiar pale yellow coated, light pink maned pegasus, Fluttershy.
"Oh, sorry Fluttershy!" She said lending a hoof to help her friend up.
"Oh it's quite alright, Dash, I was just about to start looking for you anyway..." Fluttershy spoke quietly as she got pulled up onto her hooves by Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy opened her mouth as if she was going to say more but Pinkie Pie interrupted by hopping out of the door of Sugar Cube Corners and bumping into Fluttershy making her fall once again.
"Oh, there you are Dashie! I just asked Fluttershy if she could find you! I had to get someone to tell you not to be late to the sleepover! Everyone that's an element of harmony is gonna be there..." Pinkie said quickly as Rainbow Dash started to speak.
"Actually Pinkie, I have to talk to you about that..." She started, just to be cut off by Pinkie
"...Especially the element of loyalty! Right Dash?" Pinkie asked the question obviously expecting an answer, as she stared directly at Dash.
Rainbow Dash couldn't think straight with all the pressure on her, so she just blurted something out.
"Heck yeah! I'll probably be there first!" Dash said, her instinct taking over. 'Oh no! Why'd I just say that? Stupid, stupid, stupid!' Dash thought in her head franticly.
"Yay, so now I know everyone's gonna be there! This is gonna be the best party ever!" Pinkie said, bouncing back into the door way of Sugar Cube Corners and closing the door behind her.
Rainbow Dash looked back at Fluttershy with the familar 'Can we talk?' look that they both knew well, not even noticing that Fluttershy had gotten up. With a nod of approval from Fluttershy, RD trotted behind her and followed her friend all the way to the quaint ground cottage her filly-hood friend lived in. When they arrived in front of the door, Fluttershy looked back at Dash. Her rainbow maned friend looked upset, with her gaze towards the ground and some of her mane over her right eye. She was eager to help and maybe even figure out what had her so down. She sat her pale yellow hoof on the wooden door and pushed gently. After a small creek of the the door, Fluttershy walked in the opened doorway followed by Rainbow Dash, who when inside, then sat down on Fluttershy's couch by the window.
"Would you like some tea, Dash...?" Fluttershy asked quietly.
"Uh...Sure, Fluttershy, that sounds great..." Dash said looking out the window, not really paying attention to what her friend said.
Fluttershy looked at Dash for a second before disappearing into the kitchen, Angel bunny following behind her.
Rainbow Dash moved her gaze from the window, remembering the last time she was in the quaint, homey cottage. It was the day when all the pegasi had to train their wings to create a huge tornado to lift the water from Ponyville's reserviour to Cloudsdale to make rain for all of Equestria. She remembered when she caught Fluttershy not practicing and went to the cottage to find her. When she got there and knocked, she found Fluttershy pretending to have the pony pox. She was letting loose fake coughs in a robe with "pony pox" all over her face. After giving Rainbow Dash a weak excuse Dash spoke up.
"Oh, you poor thing. You know, there's only one cure for pony pox..." Dash grabbed a bucket and filled it full of water.
"I know, plenty of bed-" She was cut off from saying anymore as Rainbow Dash had dumped the bucket of water on Fluttershy, washing the "pony pox" off.
"Cold water! Those pony pox are clearing right up!" Rainbow said after a small yelp came out of Fluttershy's mouth. Rainbow smiled to herself before noticing Fluttershy sitting accross from her and jumping a bit.
"Oh I'm sorry...did I scare you? I didn't mean to...you just looked so peaceful..." Fluttershy said in a panicked quiet tone. Rainbow Dash relaxed knowing Fluttershy wouldn't tell anypony.
"You didn't scare me...I uh...just finished a flashback..." Rainbow said looking away. It wasn't the full truth but atleast it wasn't a lie.
"Oh...okay...w-well you needed to...um...get something off your chest...?" Fluttershy asked looking Dash in the eyes again. Rainbow Dash sighed and nodded once causing Fluttershy to only wait until Dash finally said something.
"I got two letters from the Wonderbolts today..." Dash started and looked at Fluttershy. She looked confused but concentrated on what Rainbow Dash was saying, so Rainbow took that chance to continue. "One, from Spitifire, telling me to leave the Wonderbolts alone for their vacation..." Rainbow paused and Fluttershy frowned. "Weird thing though, is that she specifically told me to leave Soarin' alone because he has been apparently working really hard recently..." Dash said shortly after her silence. Fluttershy's ears perked up in surprise. The rainbow maned mare saw this and instantly opened her mouth to question it, just to get cut off by Fluttershy herself.
"Didn't they used to date...before they split it up a few months back...?" Fluttershy said aloud, and Dash scrunched up her face.
"So? What has that got to do with anything in her letter?" Dash replied her voice laced with confusion.
"Um...nothing...I hope...if you don't mind me asking...what about the other letter...?" Fluttershy replied quickly, as if she was solving some great mystery, but along with that, she was as gentle as a caring mother. Dash gave her the same confused face as before, and calmly replied back to her after a second.
"Well it had the same Wonderbolt's logo and design as Spitfire's letter except this one was from an anonymous Wonderbolt...telling me to meet them in the back fields of Sweet Apple Acres...said they're gonna check on my wings..." Rainbow Dash shuffled nervously in her seat, avoiding Fluttershy's gaze.
"Your wings? But they look fine..." Fluttershy questioned, tilting her head to get a better view of Dash's wings, all the while showing her confusion. Dash sighed and explained to Fluttershy what happened after her friends left and what had happened this morning. Throughout the explanation she received small gasps and high pitched squeaks from the yellow pegasus, but when she finished, Fluttershy was looking directly at her.
"Dash, um, why'd you come to me with this information...I mean it's no trouble but, uh, w-why me?" Fluttershy said quietly, looking directly into Dash's deep rose orbs.
"Well...I need advice, and I've known you since flight school...and, yeah...So, your advice, Shy?" Dash said quickly trying to avoid sounding sappy and getting straight to the point.
"Well...uh...I could send you with one of my animal friends...then I could tell Pinkie...um...that your helping my friend and will be at the party alittle late...if you want..." Fluttershy said quietly, presenting her idea to Dash. The cyan mare thought about it for a second, and shrugged.
"Sounds good but what happens if something...bad...happens?" Dash asked the light pink maned mare, keeping her eyes locked on the floor.
"Well my friend would um...would alert us..." She replied quietly. "Oh I know who we can ask too...don't you worry Dashie, nothing will happen to you while he's on the watch..." She paused and smiled innocently "Some say he's got the eyes of a hawk...but the cry of the..." Fluttershy looked at Dash and squeaked cutely "...falcon!" Fluttershy whispered and began to giggle quietly.
Rainbow Dash sighed closing her eyes for a second then smiling at her friend's sudden humor at her event. She stood up on her hooves and spoke up quickly.
"Well, Shy, I'm gonna get going...I think I need a nap after all of this talking..." Dash said, laughing. Fluttershy smiled and nodded. After exchanging goodbyes, Dash exited the small cottage with a quick flap of her wings and rocketed towards her house. After a minute or so she landed on the fluffy cloud surface of her porch with a loud yawn. She was tired and she figured after napping she could go and practice a few tricks. She smiled smugly and walked into her house, her day going perfectly.
~Later at the Wonderbolt's vacation home~
Soarin' wandered the halls looking for High Winds hoping to talk to him about something that's been on his mind for awhile. He stood out among the other Wonderbolt's in the halls because he was the only one not wearing the aerial jumpsuit, but that didn't matter to Soarin'. He just wanted to have a nice relaxing vacation out of the normal celebrity routine. He also wanted Spitfire to leave anyone he hung out with on the vacation alone, and that was what High Winds was for. He stopped at one of the rooms and knocked on the door.
"Hey High Winds, you in there?" Soarin' asked from the hall.
"Yeah Soar! Come on in, bro!" A voice said from the other side of the door. Soarin' pushed on the door and opened it. He quickly walked in, shutting the door behind him, and looked at High Winds. Even though High Winds and him looked alike, they weren't brothers, although they both felt as if they were.
"Any news on Spitfire and her mail...?" Soarin' asked quietly. High Wings nodded and told Soarin' about the letter sent to Rainbow Dash and how he read it over before re-tying the scroll shut and sending it.
"Oh great...now she's jealous over that rainbow maned mare..." Soarin' grumbled. "Thank's High Winds...I need to go think this through..." He finished then walked out of High Wind's room and into the hallway. Before he could even turn around a white and yellow blur stopped infront of him.
"Soarin'! Soarin'! Hey! There you are! I need you to do me a HUUUUGE favor tomorrow, okay? Oh, please please please!" Said the energy filled Wonderbolt, Surprise. She had on an urgent face, so Soarin' wondered what it could possibly be.
"Okay Surprise, but what is it?" He asked quietly, a smirk on his face. Surprise's favors almost always benefitted him greatly.
"Well I need you to go to Sweet Apple Acres and buy two pies...then wait for me to pick them up in the back fields..." She said giggling
"Okay...but why and when?" Soarin' replied. This was alittle suspicious, even for Surprise. It took a minute for her to reply, but she did eventually.
"They're for me but because I have to help a few others get the pies from Sugarcube Corners I can't um...get the ones at Sweet Apple Acres." Surprise paused. "Oh and be there a bit before sun down and don't wear your uniform, okay? Kay, bye Soarin! You'll thank me later...Uh I mean...I'll thank YOU later! BYE!" She finished talking and sped off down the hallway before Soarin' could even think about questioning what she just said a second ago. He sighed and shook his head.
"She's so random sometimes..." He whispered and turned opposite to the direction Surprise went and began the short trip to his room. It was time to do some serious thinking and maybe even take a shower.
~Later at Dash's house~
It was dark, the only illumination coming from the moon. The light shining on a sleeping cyan blue pegasus, as she tossed and turned in her sleep. Her dream was normal at first, she was flying at a high speed nothing else but the sky and a few clouds around her. Then a yellow bolt with white wings came down and she stopped abruptly.
"What the hay...?" She whispered looking at the bolt in fascination before a flash blinded her, followed by a large roar of thunder. When Dash looked back towards the bolt again, it wasn't there. In it's place was Soarin' in his Wonderbolts uniform, smiling and holding out a hoof towards her. Dash smiled and floated towards him, her wings slowly flapping. All of the sudden, she felt burning on her back and smelled smoke, and turned her head to look behind her.
"I said...DON'T BOTHER HIM!" A very furious Spitfire screeched, as her hooves started to get surrounded by fire, engulfing whatever they were touching in flames, and they were resting on Dash's cyan wings. Dash screamed, and jerked up, opening her eyes in a flash, and scanned the room for anything that was in her dream. The only things even close were the Wonderbolts posters. She stared at one with Spitfire on it and panted heavily. She shook her head and sighed.
"I need to go out for a night fly..." she whispered to herself, then yawned. "Then some more sleep wouldn't hurt..." She finished, completely forgetting what she said earlier, and crawling off of her soft bed. She looked around her room for a second and let out another sigh. Dash didn't know why she had such a big house built. After a while it started to get lonely, with all its empty space. She shrugged, opened her wings, and sped outside, ready for a nice night fly.
A slight breeze ruffled Dash's mane as she stopped to look at the moon. It was a waxing gibbous, and the light was shining on everything and everypony who was even out this late, making it easy to see an abundance of things. Rainbow Dash smiled, and began her evening flight by flying at a casual speed...well...what she counted as casual anyway. After a second she started flying towards the moon, stopping halfway and performing some minor tricks like loop de loops and corkscrews for a few minutes, then continuing flying towards the front of the moon. She stopped there and smiled, taking in the view of Ponyville, and Sweet Apple Acres enveloped by the whitish glow of the moon, making the drops of a recent rainstorm visible on many of the roofs to Dash's deep rose pegasus eyes. After a while she sped off once again, heading towards her house. She landed on her cloud porch softly, too sleepy to do any more tricks, and went inside to rest, thinking no one saw her.
This was not the case, however, as two Wonderbolts in the far off distant cloud home saw everything. The navy maned colt could've sworn he just saw the most beautiful pony in Equestria, not knowing himself, that it was Dash. The only thing he knew was that she was a pegasus, due to the fact she was in the sky. Even with his pegasus eyes, he couldn't see in the dark, or even THAT far away. The pony was a speck in his vison, but an imprint into his mind. Soarin' smiled, vowing to find that pony and get to know them. Be friends if it was a colt, and if a mare...maybe more.
The other Wonderbolt knew exactly who it was and scowled. Spitfire would have to work overtime to keep the bolts away from that little mare.
"She'll never get Soarin', not while I'm around..." She hissed and turned to the pony whom she hired to watch Soarin' and smiled. "Understand?" Spitfire asked.
"Yes ma'am, keep Soarin' and Rainbow Dash from seeing, or communicating with eachother..." The pony replied as if following the order could risk the fate of Equestria.
"Good, now go hit the hay...or should I say can?" Spitfire replied cruelly and laughed. The pony glared and left the room. Once out they trotted to their room.
"Don't worry Spitfire...You'll get what's coming to ya...and next time you'll kick the can...but instead of fans knowing where you are, Rainbow Dash will know what you were trying to do with that letter..." She muttered, venom dripping off of every word, as she entered her room. Taking off her goggles and uniform she laid in bed staring at the ceiling plotting ways to get Dash and Soarin' together without Spitfire in her mane.
