ETHAN HOPE
Chapter 1: When dreams become nightmares
My name is Ethan Hope I am a writer, I have always had a vivid imagination, but this dream unsettled me it was wild and weird even by my standards. Following a typical dream pattern I was urgently running from a monster of unknown origins in a dark and damp forest, it engulfed the light around me and dug its claws deep beneath the surface of my consciousness. It was faster than me, but yet kept its distance as if its goal was not to kill me, but to trap me inside of my own fears until the point I could no longer wake or escape. I ran and ran until I came upon a house, or more of a shack, perplexed and disordered I saw it as my only chance of survival so I quickly made my way through the door and bared up the hinges with a chair I had found next to a eaten down desk. The monster outside bruised and scared the wooden door, but before it could burst through the door and devour me, it mysteriously disappeared into the night. Unsure if I should be scared of its return or overjoyed that I had survived i decided to assess my situation and take a look at my surroundings.
The house must have been abandoned because their was no signs of life, not a single spec of light shined in the darkness. the floorboards creaked, and the rotten wood around me was unsettling. No matter where i walked though i was certain the darkness would lead me to my death but as i walked deeper into the darkness I was blinded by a forgiving naked light, collapsing to the floor of my subconscious i began to see the reality change around me warping every aspect of my nightmare. I must not of been able to handle the sudden surge though because I woke in a cold sweet swinging under the broken and torn exterior of my car. Blood trailed down my forehead, I cussed to myself noticing the ridge below me and that i was dangling from my car, my seat belt around my leg being the only thing keeping me from plunging to my death. Never cared for the damn thing. I was still regaining consciousness mumbling to myself, when my eyes were stung by dripping gasoline from the gas tank.
“God fucking...uh of course” i yelled
I continued to swear at the night dangling at least one hundred feat of a cliff swinging by my noose which was my seat belt.
“Terrific...just....terrific”
I looked several times into the abyss below me speculating weather or not it was worth risking life or death. I eventually decided to reach onto the seat belt and pull myself up into the car or onto the nearby cliff side. The car shook and shuddered it took several attempts, but I was able to ultimately climb onto the cliff edge and kiss the sweet ground. I took a close look at the street and the car to maybe determine what had happened but in the end came up with no logical conclusions. The car was inoperable and i needed to find a way to the nearest phone, before me was nothing but forest, but then something caught my eye a house on the top of a fairly steep cliff it was a long shot but then again i had nothing to loose, I had no idea where I was or what had happened.
I traversed the mountain the forest around me dark and damp, When i reached the house on the cliff it was oddly familiar the floorboards creaked and the rotten wood around me was unsettling. I proceeded into the darkness, and as it engulfed me I became less pure and secure. There was a bright light followed by a series of low concussions as I collapsed on the floor, glass shards from several mirrors launched on me and spread on the floor i could see in my reflection my iris turning a rainbow like color. I wiggled across the floor fighting a presence that never existed as the world around me disintegrated and became lost beneath my feet. I plunged into my consciousness.
I woke with a gasp and yelled with terror, a headache bombarded me like a cannon shell. I looked into the several shards of glass before me from the mirrors, and what i saw baffled me i fell onto the ground absolutely certain I was dreaming. Gazing into my hands now hooves I became terrified, this dream was all too vivid. I took hold of a shard of glass and clenched it in my hands,
“No way this going to work...no way”.
I took the glass hesitating, and then quickly slashed it against myself.
“OH...GOD DANGIT” I yelled
I bled on the floor beneath me quite badly, quickly I fashioned a tourniquet out of some cloth. I proceeded towards the door of the house stumbling and tripping over my new body and composition, upon opening the door before me I was greeted to a world like none other, it came to me then this was no ordinary house, and this was not a dream.
The landscape was vibrant and had a color scheme far more in depth then the likes of my world. The sun was pure and the sky brisk, The chill down my spine was that of fear and pain,
what was going on?
I thought over several times inside my head. I made my way off the summit the house was located on. Still disorientated I stumbled several times occasionally overseeing the cliff side. I could not seem to grasp onto walking on all fours either, I would constantly trip over my hooves and fall face first onto the fertile soil. Miraculously i had made it to the bottom of the summit in one peace, or sort of. This world looked baron among its beauty until something caught my eye a trail nonetheless, I had no idea were it led or what it bared for me though it was the only option I had, maybe I could figure out where exactly I was and how I could leave, or catch an easy painless death.
As i ventured down the beaten path the darkness of the night began to engulf the beauty of the land, The moon had taken its rightful place in the sky with all its glory and all its horror. I needed to get out the darkness quickly it had never served me any good, only embraced me in cold sweats and turned pleasant dreams into horrid nightmares. I could not clear my mind, it was impossible,
what had happened in that house that brought me here and was this even real, have i gone mad?
All too well I new that this was no dream, I was just as vulnerable to the cruel hand of fate and her wicked ways.
And so I ventured into the darkness, uncertain if I would ever see the light of day.
