An unexpected encounter

Twilight stood on one of the many high perched balconies of Canterlot Castle, one which gave a spectacular view of the royal city, its tall, clean buildings gleaming in the morning sun. She stretched her new wings, a desire to leap off the balcony and soar over the city sat in the back of her mind, simply as it was something she should be able to do after her transformation, but getting the hang of flying had proven to be a much more difficult task than she imagined. Rainbow Dash's impatient voice echoed through her mind, constantly requesting to know if she could fly with her yet. Soon, I hope

She had been making good progress in the last few weeks, and she was thrilled at the concept of soaring through the air with her friend. She figured there must be some reason Rainbow loved it so much, and she was eager to find out.

But this Train of thought only served to distract her from the less pleasant notion which her former mentor has just presented her with.

"I know you will be perfectly suited to the task."

Princess Celestia placed a gentle hoof on her former students shoulder as she gazed out to the horizon. The new princess rubbed one foreleg with a hoof and bit her lip as she pondered the proposal that Celestia had just made.

"I just don't like the idea of punishing other ponies. I know laws have to be upheld, but it just sounds like such a miserable job," Twilight debated. "I just don't have the right kind of... attitude."

Princess Celestia took the new princess's chin in her hoof, a smile spreading across her face.

"It is exactly because of your compassion and kindness that I know you will be suited to this task. I have always trusted your judgement Twilight, and I believe it will not fail here either," Celestia took a step back from her former student. "It is also important that you come to terms with what may be the less agreeable aspects of your new position."

"Of course," Twilight agree'd with a sigh. "I'll do my best."

"As always," Celestia smiled. "And try not to worry too much Twilight. The experience will not be nearly as bad as you may think. I trust you have read up on our laws thoroughly as I requested?"

"Of course Princess."

"Then you will do fine. I would be surprised if you would have to deal with anything serious anyway. I can't remember the last time we had a pony commit a particularly dreadful crime in Canterlot."

"I hope so..." Twilight murmured.

*

Twilight shifted on her throne, her nerves making it impossible for her to find a comfortable position on the regal seat. The length of the castle's throne room stretched out before her, its tall double doors looming at her from the far end, soon to be opened to the arrival of a pony who had broken one of the laws of the land. Armor clad guards lined the walls to her left and right, and a deep red carpet stretched the length of the floor between the throne and the doors. Exquisite stained glass windows let in the light of the morning sun, but failed to brighten the princess's mood.

A painful silence hung over the room that morning, broken only by Twilight's own shuffling in her seat. Her nervous movements meant she had to keep re-adjusting the crown sat precariously on her head, to prevent it falling off and rolling down the steps of her high perched seat.

After a painful amount of time, the two large double doors finally swung open, causing Twilight's head to bolt upright, and her stomach to turn in dread. Two armored stallions appeared between the doors.

"Your Highness, Princess Twilight Sparkle," one of the guards announced. "We bring before you today--"

"GET YOUR FILTHY HOOVES OFF ME THIS INSTANT!" an enraged voice yelled.

Twilight's mouth dropped open at the familiar tone that reached her ears. It couldn't be...

The two guards parted to reveal a blue unicorn clad in a distinctive purple hat and cape, adorned with stars, struggling out of the grasp of one of another guard holding one of her arms.

"Silence criminal!" The guard replied, marching Trixie up the red carpet to Twilight's throne.

"If you don't get that hoof off me right now, I will remove it myself!" The stubborn magician responded.

Twilight's mood shifted instantly upon seeing the arrogant blue unicorn. All her nervous hesitance drifted away as she sat face to face with her old rival. She had once again ran off following their last encounter, leaving Twilight with no time to speak to her casually, and to extend a friendly hoof. Twilight found Trixie both interesting and mysterious, and she hoped that under all her pomp there was a nice pony to be found, but never had the chance to find out. Excitement seemed to follow Trixie around wherever she went. Plus, on top of all this, Trixie was just... hot! Few other ponies made Twilight have the thoughts that Trixie invoked in her mind. Now Trixie had nowhere to run, and it was up to Twilight to decide what happened to her next.

A grin formed on the young Princess's face.

"My my, it seems your attitude has still not improved Trixie," Twilight called down from above, her smile feeling as though she did not have enough face to hold it. "You may release her."

Trixie stood blinking for a few moments as her captor let go of her hoof, before a scowl dominated her face.

"You!" she growled, the word heavy with contempt as she glared up at her judge through narrowed eyes.

"It's nice to see you again too Trixie," Twilight teased.
