Chapter 1: A Morning Encounter

A Morning Encounter

Twilight Sparkle levitated her brush, ready to accommodate her bangs after a good night's sleep, only to be snatched away by a couple of quick marbled hooves.

"Princess, let me handle your mane", said one of the quadruplets that Princess Celestia had appointed as her personal servants.

"Um thanks ..." Twilight could not finish the sentence. She never learned their names.

A while later, Twilight was ready to eat breakfast. She lifted the spoon with her magic, but only end up tasting air.

"Princess, you can´t eat your food in such a vulgar way. Allow me to feed you."

Twilight tried to protest to her maid, but her mouth was busy.

Next in Twilight´s routine was reviewing her routine but when she tried to take her pens and papers, she found that her saddlebags were empty.

"What th-"

"Do not worry Princess, I took the liberty of putting all that useless paperwork away," explained one of the servants.

Twilight had to put all her willpower not to explode there.

Twilight decided to take a bath, the last thing in the morning she could enjoy privately.

"Princess, let me cle-"

"AHHHHHH!"

That was the last straw. Twilight teleported out of the bathroom and galloped with all her forces back to her room in the Palace.

"Princess, come back! You didn´t  finish your bath!"

"Leave me alone!" Twilight screamed and lunged into her room, closing the door behind her.

"Woah, what's going on?" Spike, who was still on his bed, asked. He was used to just sleep while Twilight went through her morning routine and the sudden commotion managed to wake him up.

"These sisters are driving me crazy, I can´t do anything without them breathing in my neck!" Twilight said screaming.

"And you're complaining? Boy I wish I had a few assistants. Ey , do you mind lending me one sister you´re not using?"

"Spike, this is serious! I know the Princess only had her best intentions but I'm not comfortable with servants around, especially ones so insistent."

"And why don´t you simply tell the Princess that you no longer want them?" Spike asked.

"It will be the first thing I'll do once she returns from the Crystal Empire but right now I need to get rid of them."

On the other side of the door the sisters started ramming the door, worried by their mistress.

Twilight looked at Spike pleadingly, begging for his help.

"The window, quick.", he suggested.

"Are you crazy? We're on the third floor!"

Spike just stared at her for a few seconds.

"Oh yeah, wings."

That being said, Twilight approached the edge of the balcony. She had never liked heights and the prospect of throwing out the balcony did not help matters.

"Princess, are you alright? Open the door!"

"Um a moment. Um I'm combing my hair!" Spike said in a terrible imitation of Twilight.

Smiling through the efforts of her little assistant, Twilight took a deep breath and unfurled her wings. Mentally reviewing the brief lessons that Rainbow Dash had given her before her coronation ceremony, Twilight closed her eyes and threw herself into the air.

The sensation of flying was glorious. Twilight could feel the wind in her feathers, the sun on her face and the feeling of touching the sky with her hooves. Twilight felt the greatest feeling of freedom she had never experienced in her life …

For about fifteen seconds.

With a shriek that summarized all her fear, Twilight rushed straight to the ground. Twilight tried to flap her wings to no avail, she was just too scared to make it work. Now she understood perfectly how Fluttershy feels. Nevertheless, Twilight was still Twilight and her mind had already started looking for a solution. Seconds before crashing Twilight managed to teleport, disappearing in a flash of purple.

Unfortunately, Twilight tele-transported without thinking and ended up appearing in the middle of a street. To make matters worse, the momentum of her fall had not stopped so she continued into a straight line, knocking down a lot of pedestrians before crashing into the inside of a store.

"Aw. Note to self, add flight practice to the daily routine..." Twilight said, her head stuck in a bucket.

"Stop right there criminal scum!"

Twilight raised the bucket and could see a guard standing in front of her. She could see that this guard had different colors to the other members of his guard, orange fur with blue hair. Surely he must be one of the captains of the guard, just like her brother. Twilight whimpered, she was obviously in trouble.

"Flying in a residential area and diving into open market. Quite a daring maneuver. Did you took flying lessons with a Wonderbolt" the guard asked.

"Well ... yes."

The guard stared at her. Twilight wasn´t lying, if you consider a single cadet as Rainbow Dash then she did had taken lessons from a Wonderbolt. A minute of silence went by and the guard finally broke into laughter.

"Oh well, your teacher should be quite a novice!"

Twilight blushed, preferring not to agree.

"Here, let me help you." he said the guard, extending a hoof to her.

"Sorry about the mess." Twilight apologized.

"Oh relax, they were only a couple of boxes. Only next time try to stay away from the crowds, alright rookie?" He replied, winking.

Twilight smiled. It was her first natural conversation with a pony since this morning.

"And what exactly were you trying to achieve? It´s a clear day,” the guard said.

"I wasn´t trying to achieve anything, I just wanted to leave the palace. But I could not get my wings to work. I must have made a miscalculation, I forgot to take into account the height and the difference in pressure in Ponyville and ... why are you laughing ? "

"You still have the bucket on your head."

Twilight looked up and groaned in disgust as the guard laughed.

"Look at it this way, you can pass a Royal Guard." he said laughing.

Twilight groaned again. First she thought he was sympathetic but now she realized he  had the same sense of humor as Rainbow Dash. On the other hand, she did looked ridiculous with a bucket on her head. Twilight ended up joining him in laughter.

Twilight took off the bucket off and was about to introduce herself when four familiar faces suddenly appeared.

"Princess! Look at you! Let us attend to you." The quadruplets noticed the guard and approached him, growling. "What did you intended to do with the Princess?"

The guard was speechless.

"You may be a member of the Royal Guard but Princess Sparkle is under our care so keep your paws off her!" they shouted together.

Before Twilight could protest, the sisters took her in tow back to the palace.

The guard stood there, trying to understand what had happened. All he could mumble was:

"Princess?"

Back at the palace, the sisters worked with great care to fix Twilight's mane, saying things like "Princess, do not run away from palace" or "Princess, you shouldn't join with that kind of rude ponies" and so on.

Finally, Twilight could not stand it any longer and did something she had never considered. Use her royal status. Raising a hoof she ordered them to shut up.

"Princess?"

"Girls, I really appreciate your intentions and I know the Princess commanded you to obey all my orders, but the truth is that I don´t like getting all this attention so I ask you to stop," she explained.

"But Princess ...", and the four sisters began to protest.

"SILENCE!"

To be the first time using the Royal Canterlot voice, Twilight did a good job. The sisters fell silent and dropped to the ground in reverence. Twilight sighed and said:

"Girls understand, I do not want you to be my servants."

The sisters looked up, their eyes revealing their broken hearts.

"I'd rather have you be my friends. We can try again, this time as friends?"

The sisters stood up and nodded:

"We will do what you ask, Princess."

Twilight sighed:

"You could start by stop calling me Princess all the time? You can call me Twilight."

The sisters looked at each other, unsure between contradicting their Princess or being honest with her.

Twilight smiled:

"Okay, you can call me Princess if you like."

The sisters sighed:

"There is something we can do for you, Princess?"

"Right now I just want to read a book in peace."

"Oh I can reach your books!"

"And I a reading lamp!"

"And I accommodate your cushion!"

"And I ..."

The sisters noticed Twilight expression and blushed, embarrassed.

"Or we could just give a few minutes of privacy, your Highness."

"I'd like that."

The sisters began to retreat with their head down.

"And could you do me one more favor?"

These words lit up the face of the sisters.

"It's time for Spike´s breakfast. Could  you get him some gems?" Twilight said, pointing to the little dragon who had been listening to the whole conversation and now greeted at them.

The sisters smiled and retreated to the kitchen. Twilight fell into a cushion, Spike sitting on a stool beside her.

"Well you were right, they can be quite annoying!", he commented.

"I'm sure they have the best intentions. I just hope we can get along better from now on," Twilight said, levitating a book next to her.

"And where were you exactly that you ended all covered with food?"

"Oh when I tried to escape I end up crashing into the fruit market."

"Auh, that doesn't sound good."

"It wasn't so bad. I met a very nice pony."

"And what was his name?" Spike asked.

"Oh I never asked his name. But he´s a palace guard, I´m sure I´ll see him again."

Twilight then looked at the empty sky of Canterlot.

"Yes, I'm sure we'll meet again."
