Chapter 3: Nova's Story
Previous Chapter“So how’d the shed building go?”
“Horrible! He wouldn’t let me get any unicorns to help with magic”
“Well maybe next you’ll learn”
“...I make no promises”
NOVA’S STORY
Comet couldn’t help but laugh at the tired Pegasus that slumped beside him under the tree. It’d been two weeks since the accident and Nova’s only punishment was to rebuild the shed (but, more clouds somehow found their way over the crops more often..once she swore she saw one with a tail fly by. “I swear he’s got some of his old pegasi friends doing this to me.” groaned the defeated pegasus).
“If you feel any better I walked by it earlier it looks pretty nice”
“Thanks Comet, Dad said he was proud I managed to fix it so he’s letting me paint it anyway I want” Nova tried to say the last part normally but it came out more like an excited squeal which caused another fit of laugher from her friend.
“That’s good to hear, you know while you were building Silv told me about the first time you flew. It was an amazing story I will admit”
“Ahh thank you” Nova blushed slightly at the compliment. She’d remember that day very clearly in her mind, sometimes she even still dreamt but the outcome completely different from the real it’d cause Nova to run to Silver’s room just to make sure she was fine.
“It’s a good think they adopted you then isn’t it?” Comet had said it without really realising it, he wasn’t suppose to know that, that was the family secret after all.
“How did you know that?” the shock in Nova’s voice was hard to ignore.
“Well Silver told me...after how she told me how you first flew...she let it slip that “It was a good thing dad adopted you” She didn’t mean to but you know.” Comet shyly replied hoping he hadn’t upset his friend in away, after all he did have a bit of a crush on her and upsetting Nova would have devastated him.
“Well...I guess I could finally tell you, I mean it’s been fine with me that not everyone knows I don’t need ponies telling me stuff like “Why did that happen” and stuff. I just want to be treated like normal, just promise if I tell you, you’ll think of me no different” sadness was hinted in Nova’s voice as she waited for his reply.
“I’d never think of you differently, You are the most amazing Pegasus I know, talent artist and best friend I could ever ask for, I’d just really like to know more about you.” He just needed to know everything about her, he knew so much already, but how she came to be here on a magic farm for unicorn intrigued Comet, plus he thought maybe if he knew her story maybe he could care for her better, he’d know more, what to avoid talking about an all.
“Okay then...” Nova got up and moved closer to Comet coming to rest beside him her wing fluttering slightly as she lay down. “Well...It all started 10 years ago when I was just a young filly on the streets of Manehatten....”
~~~~~~~~
Big Red was strolling down the streets of Manehatten after just getting out of an important business meeting.
“I can’t believe I’m one step closer to getting the money to start up my camp, even though we will have to build all the buildings on the lot it’s a good thing I have so many friends to help with that” Big Red thought to himself happily.
He was extremely excited that his dream of opening Equestria’s first magic camp was almost true, nothing about this day could bring him down, everything was finally looking up for the stallion. Red thought about how he would tell his wife and his young daughter, how he missed them while he was gone.
Just as he was reminiscing about reuniting with his wife and child he could hear a slight whimpering, like that of a young filly.
“What was that?” Red thought “It sounded like a young filly, but surely not. It’s far too late at night maybe I should get some rest my ears are playing tricks on me.” Red decided it was best just to head to his hotel thinking that he was starting to go a bit crazy.
The whimpering continued and seemed to have gotten louder so Red decided “That’s it, I must find out what that is” and followed the sound down a dark alley and to his surprised found a young filly crying next to a trash can. Her coat was filthy and eyes puffy from crying, he couldn’t make out what colour her mane or coat were but could see little wings trying hard to get the garbage can off of her. The young filly had managed to get trapped underneath some garbage cans and was desperately trying to get herself out of the jam she was in. Big Red slowly trotted over trying not to scare the young one.
“Hi there” he said trying not to scare her “Let me help you” with little effort from his horn he managed to pick the garbage can off of the filly and move it to the side
“Are you alright little one?” all the little filly could manage was a terrified squeak. “Hey, I’ve got something to eat if you want it” Big Red opened his bag and brought out a sandwich he hadn’t bothered to eat earlier “I was saving it for later but you seem rather hungry”.
The little filly looked as though she was going to turn tail and run but hungry got the better of her and see shyly sniffed the sandwich taking small bites every so often before eating the rest in almost one bite.
“My, you are hungry, hey little one, listen why don’t you come with me back to my hotel? I have more food there and you can get a bath, you look filthy.” The little filly stared at the older stallion with wide eyes but she could tell that there was something different about him, he seemed much nicer than the other ponies in this city even though she probably shouldn’t she felt like she could trust him and followed the older unicorn back to his hotel.
In the hotel the older stallion ordered room service for the little filly and ran the bath for her. After a nice long bath the little filly ran out of the bathroom to see the older Stallion laying out food. Red finally got the first good look at the little thing and noticed her midnight blue coat and colourful mane and tail.
“You’re quite cute when your clean little one, do you have a name?” Between the noises she made while eating Red could make out a distinct answer to his question “No”. He had waited until she’d finished eating completely before asking anymore questions.
“So why don’t you tell my about yourself” The little filly looked up from the destruction she had caused with the food, finally satisfied for the first time in weeks. “Where are your parents are?”
“Well, I don’t know my name, or where my parents are. All I remember is they just sorta kicked me out of the house one day..They always called me bad names so I guess they just didn’t like me that much and one day they were just gone..Dad told me to get lost, he’d kick me out but I’d just go for a short walk and come back again and they’d be to drunk to notice I was there or forgotten what had happened. This day was different though, I went for my walk and came back the house was empty, everything was gone, all my stuff was burnt. I didn’t know what to do so I tried asking around but everypony either ignored me or told me to get lost as well. I’ve just been living in the park under the stars, It’s been fun, I love the stars. They keep me safe at night.”
“Oh my, you poor little thing, why didn’t you tell any officers?” Red watched the little filly with a sad look, the stars kept her safe, still so innocent.
“I tried but they just told me to beat it. It’s okay though, I’m fine on my own!” Spreading her tiny wings as far as they could go the little filly tried to prove her toughness. All Red could do was laugh at her attempt, it was oddly cute to watch such a young pony try and act tough.
“You know, I have a daughter your age I think the two of you would really get along. If you have no where else to go, you should come home with me. I’d gladly take in another daughter.”
Nova wasn’t so sure of the idea at first but she spent all night with Big Red listening to tales about his wife and daughter, the more she heard about them the more she wished to see this life for her own. Come morning Big Red and the young filly he had dubbed ‘Nova’ because of her love of the stars headed towards the train station and boarded their train. Nova had never been on the train before so she had a hard time sitting still, to keep her entertained Red told Nova more stories about his child and wife and about the camp he was building saying that she could also be a very important member of the camp if she truly wanted too.
They had arrived at Ponyville early the next morning. After a couple hours on the train and a short carriage ride later they had arrived at the gates of the camp.
“DADDY!” Nova jumped at the sudden sound and turn just in time to see a small grey blur run towards Big Red and jump on him “I’ve missed you!”
“Hello Sweetie” the voice of an angel Nova thought to herself as she watched the white unicorn come and kiss her husband
“Who is this?” she said sweetly looking over at Nova who was hidden behind Red. Big Red explained the entire situation to his wife and daughter.
“SO I GET TO HAVE A SISTER?” Silver yelled excitedly. Big Red only chuckled “Only if Nova wishes to stay with us, what do you say Nova?”
After some thought and after hearing all the good things, Nova finally found that maybe she could have the family she always dreamed of one that wouldn’t hurt her, or call her names or anything she’d finally found her home and to make things better the stars where even brighter here! This was it she thought hard, this is my new home. All she could think to do was scream “YES! I’d Love to stay with you!”
With a huge smile and snuggle from his wife, Willow was the first to speak “Well it seems we have a new daughter then” next thing Nova knew she’d been lifted on Willow’s back and the little family with its newest member headed back to their home.
Weeks had passed since Nova was taken in by her new family and the little filly couldn’t be happier she had parents and a sister. They had celebrated her birthday (two weeks after her new sisters) and given her a painting kit so she could paint the stars like she always wanted too which made her even happier. Everything finally seemed to be fine for Nova, no more hunting for food no more getting wet in the rain. She was home, and she was going to stay there.
“That’s it. That’s my story.” Nova said while staring off into the clouds, she hadn’t noticed she’d been watching them for awhile she also didn’t notice the unicorn beside her had only been staring at her and hung on to her every word.
“That is amazing, but I have one question.” Comet replied.
“What’s that?” with a puzzled look on Nova’s face she wondered what on earth he could have to ask
“Well if you didn’t know your own name or anything how did you know when you’re birthday was? I mean it didn’t seem like your real parents would have celebrated it”
“Oh they didn’t I only knew because the same day every year they would tell me how big of a mistake I was and about how I ruined their lives. So when Red asked me if I knew my birthday I sorta had an idea. It was a sad day back then but now I look forward too it.” Nova smiled brightly at her friend.
Comet couldn’t help but smile back. Both friends just stared into the clear blue sky together forgetting about everything but enjoying every moment after all if what happened hadn’t had happened they wouldn’t be friends, wouldn’t be having this moment together everything just seemed perfect to them.
“Hey Love birds!” the yell snapped both of them out of their day dream as they turned to see Silver standing behind them
“You know we still have work to do right? Your class starts in 20 minutes Comet and Nova there are some clouds that near clearing.”
“Yes Ma’am!” Comet and Nova saluted at the same time, the three of them couldn’t help but start laughing as they trotted off together to do their duties.
