Chapter 4: 4. Chapter 3: Back On The Run

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Hey, guys. I'm back with the next chapter. Please enjoy.

The cart speeded down the tunnel, and then stopped, abruptly, at the bumper. Link and Ruby jumped out, and started running towards the village. Navi flew out of Link's hat. The trio stopped in their tracks, as they looked to see the village was crumbling right in front of them.

Moblins were breaking down the crystal stalagmite homes. They were blowing open the homes in the cave walls. Diamond Dogs were running from the Moblins, as they chased them with their spears. What was terrifying the most, was there was already so many casualties. Bodies of fallen Diamond Dogs, mostly in front or inside their homes, were scattered throughout the village. Thankfully, none of the bodies were children. However, the Moblins took them captive.

Link and the girls took cover behind a fallen stalagmite, as several Moblin soldiers came marching through. From where they were, they saw the Moblins loading up the puppies in cages. They couldn't find Spike, Flurry Heart, or Rocky. That could mean they weren't captured, yet.

"What are we going to do?!" whispered Ruby.

"Navi, you and Ruby go find Spike and the others. I'm gonna free the puppies, and round up any survivor that's still in the village." said Link.

"Those Moblins still look much too strong for your sword. You still got your hookshot?" said Navi.

"You betcha." said Link, brandishing the pull-chain weapon. "We head out back through the cave, leading to the beach, where Ruby first found us."

"Be careful, Link." said Ruby.

"It's you who should be careful, Mrs. Ruby." said Link.

Link snuck out to the left, towards the captured puppies. Navi and Ruby snuck to the right, towards Ruby's house, the one place to start searching for Flurry Heart and the boys.

Link took cover behind more boulders, as he tried to get closer to the cages. Link ducked his head, as the Moblin, Snort, brought another caged puppy to the pile. Looking up, Link saw the Moblins had brought a giant barrel of wine.

'Probably to celebrate and toast to another barbaric conquest.' Link thought.

Looking at the barrel again, Link got an idea. Link whistled to Snort. Snort turned to see Link, and gasped. When Snort reached for his conch, to sound the other Moblins, Link brought out his hookshot, and latched onto the barrel. Link pulled, and brought the barrel down onto Snort. Snort dropped his conch, as his entire body, except for his legs. Link then rushed up, and kicked Snort in the barrel, sending him rolling right down a slope, and towards a wall.

The puppies laughed at seeing the giant pig thing go down. Link then unlocked all the cages, and set all the puppies free.

"Come on, kids. Let's go find your parents." said Link, then whispered to himself, "If they are still around."

As Link and the puppies escaped, Snort tried to get back up, kicking his legs back and forth. However, the weight of the drink in the barrel wasn't getting him anywhere.

"Please, let me out of here! Please!" The Moblin whined. "I really don't drink!"

...

Ruby and Navi took cover behind a house, as a group of Moblins marched through the streets, searching for any more dogs to take as prisoners. As soon as they were gone, Ruby and Navi made a dash for Ruby's house.

As soon as they got inside, Ruby rushed to Rocky's room, searching for her pup.

"Rocky? Rocky!" Ruby whispered, not wanting to attract the Moblins, outside.

"Mrs. Ruby, over here!" Navi whispered to Ruby.

Navi guided Ruby to a latch on the floor, in the hall.

"Oh, the cellar! Of course!" said Ruby. "I forgot all about this. This has so many stuff in there that I've collected over the years, it makes the perfect place to hide."

Ruby opened the cellar door, then she and Navi rushed down the stairs. In the dark cellar, everything was collecting dust. There were chests of rocks and gems that Ruby neglected to trade in, and were now considered worth less or nothing at all. There was plenty of digging and mining equipment in their boxes.

"Kids? Kids, are you down here? It's us, Ruby and Navi." Ruby called.

"Mrs. Ruby?" a voice called.

From behind a large crate, Spike came out of hiding. In his right arm, he carried the still unconscious Flurry Heart. In his left arm, he carried the frightened Rocky.

"Mama!" Rocky cried, running to his mother.

"Oh, my baby! Rocky!" Ruby said, scooping up her pup in her arms.

"When the Moblins came, I knew I had to get Rocky and Flurry Heart to someplace safe. So, when I found the door leading to this cellar, I just hoped we wait it out, and wait for you guys to come back." said Spike.

"Thank you Spike, for protecting the kids." said Ruby. "Come. We need to find Link. I'm sure he's helped more others escape."

Rushing outside, they saw Link standing with the last of the surviving Diamond Dogs that were taken prisoners. About a hundred of them, half male and the other half female, with the pups were reunited with their parents.

"Spike, you and the rest of the guys okay?" asked Link.

"Yes, we are. Is this all that's left of the villagers?" said Spike.

"Yes, and there'll be less if we stay here longer." said Link.

"But, even if we could get out, they've got more soldiers patrolling near the entrance tunnel, on the beach." said one male Diamond Dog.

"Come, I know another way out. A secret way out." said Ruby. "It's right underneath my house, in my cellar. It's been there longer before I lived in it."

Ruby led everyone down to her cellar. Ruby and Link both pushed a giant book case, to reveal a long tunnel in the wall.

"This goes all the way to the edge of the meadow, or what's left of the meadow. We can head into the direction of the Dragon Canyon." said Ruby.

"Dragons?!" cried a male Diamond Dog. "But they're-"

"Better them, than those pig-faced trolls!" a female Diamond Dog interrupted.

"Come on, everybody. Stay close." said Link, taking the lead.

Navi brightened her light, lighting the way. Ruby and Spike stayed in the back of the line, to close up the passage, so they wouldn't be followed. The pathway through was pitch dark, but looked to be a long, yet safe trek through. Still, Link and the Diamond Dogs, including Ruby, all brandished their weapons, to be safe. Link had his sword and shield, Ruby with her crystal dagger, and the other Diamond Dogs carried diamond-edged spears, along with bows and crystal-tipped arrows.

Soon enough, light was in view. The group emerged from the tunnel, and away from the ruined valley.

"Mrs. Ruby, which way to the canyon?" asked Link.

"Over there." Ruby said, pointing to a large mount of rock in the horizon, across a giant field.

"It's out in the open. What if we get spotted?" said a male puppy.

"It'll be okay. There's lots of trees and giant boulders we can use to hide behind." Link said, pointing to the field. "Now, we've gotta hurry, everyone."

The group began to trek across the field. It was a long walk, and already some of the Diamond Dogs were becoming tired, their paws starting to ache. Yet, Link, Spike, or Ruby would be there to help them back onto their feet.

They were just about halfway towards the canyon, when they heard the sound of a Moblin's conch, sounding off in the distance. Link climbed onto a boulder, and shielded his eyes over his head, to see a cloud of dust coming towards them. Link knew it was the Moblins, charging at them.

"Mrs. Ruby! Spike! We're gonna need to run!" Link called, jumping off of the boulder.

The crowd of Diamond Dogs began to panic, but Ruby was the first to calm them down.

"Now, everyone! Please, at ease! We're still a good length away from them. We're almost to the canyon." Ruby reassured.

"But, if they catch up?!" a female Diamond Dog cried, holding her puppies close.

"We can hold them back, as much as we need to." said Ruby.

"Their skin is thick, like an extra set of armor. I don't think I can hold them all back with my hookshot." said Link.

"You won't have to, Link. We've got spears and arrows, crafted from the sharpest gems. Strong enough to pierce the Moblins' tough build." said Ruby.

"Ruby's got a point. We've gotta protect our families, with all we've got!" a male Diamond Dog agreed, raising his spear.

"For our families! For all those who we're lost! We owe it all to them!" another male Diamond Dog chimed in.

"We're gonna have to make a run for it." Link said, looking back at the cloud of dust. "Everyone ready?"

The dogs all barked in agreement. The group began to make a run for the canyon. Back with the Moblins, captain Moe spotted the group, heading for the canyon.

"Are the scouting parties ready?" Moe asked a random Moblin grunt.

"Yessir! They should be coming from both the left and right." the grunt saluted.

"Give the signal. We can't let them get to that canyon." ordered Moe. "But, leave the boy alive. I'll handle him."

The grunt gave the signal with his conch. Up ahead, Link could see a group of Moblins charging from the left, spears and clubs at the ready.

"Ambush!" Link cried.

"Archers! Defend the women and children!" a male archer Diamond Dog ordered.

"Let me have some crystal arrows! I'll help hold them back!" said Link.

Drawing their bows and arrows, Link and the dogs fired. A showers of arrows fell from the air, and they pierced the Moblins' tough torsos. One by one, a great number of the Moblins fell.

"Keep going, Mrs. Ruby!" Link called back.

Ruby and the rest of the group kept running towards the canyon. However, the captain spotted them escaping.

"Fire the catapult! Don't let them escape!" shouted Moe.

The Moblins loaded a catapult with stolen Goron powder kegs, and launched them towards the top of the canyon. The kegs exploded, sending a rockslide of boulders down onto the rift of the canyon. The Diamond Dogs stopped in their tracks, and backed up to avoid the giant rocks.

"We're trapped!" Spike cried.

"Wait! Where's Ruby?!" a female Diamond Dog called.

"She's abandoned us!" another female dog cried.

"No, she hasn't! Look!" Spike shouted, pointing to the left.

"There's another way! Through here! Hurry!" Ruby called, and beckoned.

From where Ruby was, an outcropping of rock hid a secret tunnel, leading towards the direction of the canyon. The Diamond Dogs slid down the mouth of the tunnel, single file. Link looked back to see Ruby, Spike, Flurry Heart, and Rocky enter the tunnel, lastly.

"The women and children made it through! Fall back!" Link called.

The male Diamond Dogs ran for the tunnel, while Link shot a fire arrow at the catapult, setting it ablaze. Link then used his Din's Fire spell, and burned the field in a wall of fire, blocking the Moblins from following them, any further. Link and Navi dashed for the tunnel, and slid down the mouth of the cave.

"You alright, lad?" Ruby asked.

"Yes, Mrs. Ruby. I'm okay. We shouldn't have to worry about the Moblins following us, now." said Link.

"I can't see where the path leads. Do we follow it or not?" said a male Diamond Dog.

"Follow it, of course!" said a female dog.

"Alright, everyone! Single file, going down the path!" Ruby called. "Pups, hold onto your parents' paws! Also, for Celestia's sake, don't push all at once! Watch your footing!"

"Mrs. Ruby's becoming quite the leader. Ain't she, Link?" said Navi. Link nodded, fully.

...

"Where is that lieutenant?! That's the last time I leave him in charge of a raid! Lieutenant Snort! You're never around when I need you!" Moe yelled, furiously. "If only I was there, and switched my role of searching for the boy with his. Nothing gets under my nose in a raid."

"Captain! We found him, sir!" a grunt saluted. "Snort was found stuck in the wine barrel we brought, to toast our victory."

A few Moblins carried the already drunk Moblin, Snort, and threw him at the captain's feet.

"Oh, there you are, ol' boy!" Snort hiccuped and giggled, in a tipsy manner. "Captain, you'll never believe this! I just spotted the boy! Guess the Dodongo wasn't a match for him, after all! Eh?"

"Anything else you like to point out?" The captain said, shaking with impatient rage.

"Hmm? None, sir." said Snort. "Say, when did we get out in the middle of a field?"

The captain chuckled, then grabbed Snort furiously, and threw him into the ruined catapult. The flames on the catapult had already burnt out, leaving a broken pile of burnt wood in it's place. Snort landed into the pile, and got his head stuck in one of the wheels.

"Get out of that, if you can!" Moe growled.

Well, guys. This seems to be a good stopping point for this chapter. Next chapter, it will switch to the narrative of the Mane Six, as they meet up with Zelda, Impa, Malon, and Epona, as they search for Link and the others.

The chase scene is loosely based on the movie, The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey. The scene with Snort and Moe is also loosely based on the Disney movie version of Robin Hood.
