Chapter 1: Detective Complex

Detective Complex

Act 1 – The Mysterious Clearing

"Get up there before I get up your flank!"

Commander Axis Strike and his detective partner Blue Thorn were stumbling up a cliff, close to the border of Canterlot. They were investigating a murder, and this was the directions they were given.

Well, Blue was doing most of the job anyway helping up Axis. Finally climbing up, she encountered a bushy wasteland ( to be honest, she was expecting a shady murderer jumping at her ). Axis glanced around. "Where's the body, partner?"

Blue shrugged. "Commander, we don't have a location. It could be miles before we find the corpse, which would have already-" The twenty three year old mare was cut off by a triumphant- and scary? scream. Her gentle aqua eyes darted up, and saw a screeching stallion ( which wasn't Axis to her disappointment ) backing away from a clearing.

She instantly bolted up to the scene, pushing the stranger back as the two laid eyes on the clearing. Blue's face paled, and raised one hoof to her dropped jaw.

"C-Commander?"

Three corpses were threwn over the rocky ground. Each one had an unusual injury, and to Blue's shock, all three were dead.

The first one was of a lavender coated Alicorn. With magenta pink eyes and a lovely mixture of pink and purple in her mane and tail, it was a shame and an undying shock as Blue realized it was the Princess of Friendship. Her bloody heart was torn out of her chest ( a stream of scarlet blood still flowing out of Twilight's wound to Blue's disgust ), and an bloated intestine was thrown over the Princess's neck.

The Detective gently put the dead mare's heart next to the body, taking a careful photo of it with her Polaroid camera. Then she pushed the body aside roughly to look at the second corpse.

The afore-mentioned second had Blue Thorn reeling for air as she recognized it. Her college friend Jennifer Rose, always identifiable by her striking red and white mane and tail. Jennifer was Blue's drama buddy, leaving the school to observe the art of dark magic.

"Rose, how did you end up like this?" Murmuring words of regret, the Detective brushed back strands of white and red mane from Jennifer's face. She spotted the dead mare's wound, and gingerly investigated it.

Gunshot wound, obviously. Most probably from a calibre shotgun, small but capable of killing easily, thought the young mare as she strapped on rubber gloves, picking away left over bullet shrapnel. Grimacing, Blue gave Jennifer's dead body one last despairing glance before bucking it away with back hooves, next to Twilight Sparkle's corpse.

The third and last pony was a charcoal grey stallion, with a shocking yellow and black mane and tail. His amber orange-reddish eyes were locked open, as if he had died gazing up at the cornflower skies. The mare immediately recognized him, and painful memories rushed through her mind like flashing sirens.

Blue backed away, beautiful eyes now narrowed. Clenching her hooves, she kicked the body sending it flying two metres away. "It was an one night stand, you motherfucker," she mumbled, as if the stallion was still alive. "Hear that?" She screeched up, blinking back salty tears as she observed the rotting body.

Stepping closer, she saw the corpse's strong grip on a large kitchen knife, both hooves splattered with dried blood. Piecing that together with the Princess's wound, Blue realized that he had been involved in killing the two.

But who killed him? It makes no sense, the Detective mused, ruminating empty theories as she saw the screaming stallion from earlier. He had a handsome amber coat, with emerald green eyes and a brunette mane and tail. And where's Axis?

Well, I'll face a shitstorm if he's dead.

Blue took five steps towards the male, now that he had stopped screaming. She fingered her belt, feeling the familiar bulge of her sniper rifle under her coat, then confidently turned to face the emerald irises. "Who are you?"

"Lass, I-I think you'll be better back in town," the stranger stuttered. His face was adorned with cute little freckles, like a schoolpony fresh out of highschool. Regardless, Blue stood her ground.

"Mr.." The Detective noticed the pony's cutie mark, which was a flaming phoenix in front of a question mark. "Phoenix, I'll have to arrest you on the spot for assumed slaughter if you don't tell me why you were here."

Even more stuttering followed her order, and finally the boy spoke up. "Mah' name is Phoenix Swirl, and Ah'm a wandering tradespony. Ah' stumbled across this monstrosity," Phoenix motioned to the corpses of the dead ponies, "-when Ah' was lookin' for mah' brother Gala Swirl." The stallion coughed, almost fainting. "And I have no idea where he is." Phoenix's accent dropped, his tear filled eyes glancing up at Blue.

"Mr. Swirl, come with me. My commander's disappeared, too," Blue confessed, weak side showing for a bit before her emotional firewall built up again. "So I know what you're going through right now."

The Detective held out a snowy white hoof. "Friends?" Phoenix stared at the hoof, a hue of dark red crossing his cheekbones before shaking Blue's hoof. "Aye."

From the notes of Doctor Vivid Piper

1. Light Scarlett, once schizophrenic drug dealer mastermind, now prefers the term smart as fuck drug dealer. ( Note : harrumph. )

2. For the past two years Light has been undergoing weekly therapy at the Clinic, in an attempt to change his views of the world due to his schizophrenic cases of being arrested various times. ( Doesn't it serve him right, however? )

3. Discuss theory of creation with Light, and this time don't be put to near tears over an argument like this. Also don't argue with Light when the Detective is watching- fuck. Why do I care if Blue Thorn is watching me argue with a disturbed crim?

4. The unicorn seems to be cured, but he only says that. Is this possible?

Doctor Vivid's Office, Manehatten

Light Scarlett was growing impatient, bored even. Doctor Piper, his assigned psychologist was late to the job. This final session with the earth pony was highly unnecessary as the past half dozen was. Light was cured, for heaven's sake, and had been for week sixty six. In his opinion, he wouldn't and shouldn't have to twiddle his hooves in front of one of the Princess's companions.

At first Light paced the office swiftly, refusing to be calmed by the fresh air and the magical pulsing mood lights that hung from the reception desk.

He sat on various chairs, testing their comfy cushions. One was so small ( Light not knowing that it was for a certain baby dragon ) he broke it. Quickly ducking away from the chair, he gave up and sat against the cream coloured wall.

To the male's relief, the doors hissed and slid apart, admitting Vivid Piper to his own office. The tall stallion limped to his satin swivel chair, slapping the armrest controls until the medical sacs under Vivid's left back hoof throbbed gently.

"Aah. My hip's killing me, Scarlett," he sighed, not noticing Light wasn't paying attention. "Nothing helps. People think they knew pain, but this goes far beyond."

"You're late," commented the doctor's patient, Light's tone empty of sympathy. "Did you think I cared?"

Vivid sighed blissfully again as the chair's pads went to work with his injured hoof. "No. Not at all, you're always in a hurry it seems…" His gaze drifted into Light's. "How was your day, anyway?"

"Doctor, I'm not one of those happy go lucky ponies like that smartass Element bearer who's always tied up in ' ooh, ooh, a partayyy'! ' " Light snapped at Vivid, who flinched slightly at the stallion's outburst.

The doctor huffed a little, swinging his bulk forward and opening a levitating paper file on his desk. "Why is it the saner you get, the nastier you are?"

Light crossed his hooves, his body language relaxed for the first time. "Such repressed anger. Where does it all stem to?" He smirked as Vivid's face went bright, bright red.

The unicorn emerged from the office, self satisfied smirk even more pronounced then usual. When his best friend Wildcard ( and all out self called bodyguard for Scarlett ) saw this expression, she knew that Light was back in control. Back in control and his schizophrenic life was cured.

At least.

Wildcard questioned anyway, just to be certain of the prediction she had made. "Well, Light, how are we?"

The latter buttoned his jacket, which was a nice red and black flannel pattern. "Fine, Wildcard. That's to say that I'm one hundred percent functional. Which is like; one point five Celestias. Or a half of Rainbow Dash."

"A half? You're being modest."

"Correct," Light grinned. "I am."

Wildcard's shoulders sagged a little bit with relief. She glanced at him. "Blue wanted you, by the way."

Perplexed, Light flipped out his cellphone, and began to call the Detective. "Why?"

"Because the Commander, Axis Strike is missing. And we all know you don't really like him much," Wildcard concluded, a grim frown adorning her charcoal black face.
