When Things go Boom
Chapter 5: For Life
Previous ChapterWith their assignments and a goal, the communication cut off. His mind still reeling with these revelations, Carter turned and almost jumped out of his skin when he came face to face with Applejack and her friends.
"How much..?" He started before Applejack cut him off.
"We're helpin' yah." She declared with a stomp of her hoof to punctuate her declaration.
"That's not ne-." He began before he was once more cut off. This time by Rarity.
"Not necessary?" She finished for him. "Judging by what your friends and Princess Celestia said, I'd say it's very necessary." They all nodded agreement.
Carter felt a mix of frustration and admiration for the mares. "I'm sorry, but it's too dangerous."
"But it's our world too." Carter was surprised at the sound of Fluttershy's quiet voice. He had begun to wonder if the pegasus had a voice.
"And besides, I can't throw a 'Welcome to this World' party if both our worlds blow up" Pinkie Pie offered in a cheerful tone that left Carter stumped.
"Face it Jackie boy." Rainbow said. "You don't know your way around town like we do. You need us."
It was true. Carter didn't quite know his way around like these ponies. And so with a sigh, he conceded defeat.

As Fluttershy and Rarity went to try and calm the residents of Ponyville, Carter, Pinkie Pie, Applejack and Rainbow Dash went looking for the rift. As they went around town, Carter thought hard on where the epicenter of the rift could be on this side.
"Where could it be?" He finally wondered aloud in frustration.
"Well if I were a rift, I'd be at Sugarcube Corner." Pinkie offered.
"You'd go to Sugarcube Corner whether you were a rift or not." Rainbow pointed out.
"Can we go to Sugarcube Corner?"
"Maybe later." Applejack answered. "Right now we need ta find that rift." She then turned to Carter. "Any ideas?"
Carter didn't answer. He was still thinking. Retracing his steps, so to speak. Then a thought occurred to him.
"Applejack! Where was it you found me this morning?"
"The North orchard."
Carter thought a little more, the gears in his head visibly turning. "That's where I came through." He muttered quietly.
"So?" Rainbow asked.
"So there's a good chance that that's where the rift is."
/
Applejack and Pinkie searched around on the ground while Rainbow flew around searching from above. Sometimes she dove down into the trees and searched among the foliage. It wasn't long before Applejack spotted it, pointing it out just above the trees.
"Look!" She called out to her companions as she pointed towards it.
It was fairly large and just barely hidden behind a tree. It was a bubble of white and magenta energy that sparked and warped as it hung in the air. As they gazed at the ball of energy, it sparked and grew several times it's size and the sky filled with magenta and white electricity.
/
At the same time back in Eureka Jo also went hunting for the rift epicenter. She started at Henry's garage where Henry and Nathan started to repair the machine. From there she searched the area surrounding the garage. She hadn't gone far before she also encounter a ball of warping, sparking, white and magenta energy. Suddenly it pulsated and grew as reverberating thud shook the ground and air, knocking Jo off her feet and filling the sky with magenta and white electricity.
/
Ditzy Doo, otherwise known as Derpy Hooves, sighed as she settled down on a cloud to rest after long day of weather duties. Today was supposed to be sunny, but for some reason the weather team kept finding stray, more wild clouds in the sky. But finally the grey pegasus had a chance to relax. But the day had other plans.
Derpy jumped when a sudden reverberating thud was felt throughout the air, jarring her out of her relaxation. Suddenly massive white something appeared right in front of her, barreling right for her. With a yelp of surprise, she took to the air an instant before the cloud she'd been sitting on was destroyed. But she didn't have time to think too much about that as she was still in harms way.
She as she dodged the strange thing she would soon know as an aeroplane, with just a feather's breadth to spare, it barely registered from the corner of her eye the strange creatures that stared at her wide eyed from the windows on the strange thing.
An instant later she passed over the odd thing and watched as it began to warp and turn almost ghostly before vanishing. Leaving Derpy hyperventilating as she tried to slow her thumping heart.

Carter pushed open the door to the library and poked his head in. After sending Applejack Pinkie Pie and Rainbow on their mission the Sheriff had decided to check on the Lunar ruler. Inside the library he found that several more books had been thrown off their shelves and sitting in the middle of the floor studying a well worn brown journal was the youngest of the Celestial sisters.
"How's it coming?" He asked as he approached.
"It is no wonder that Twilight is Celestia's star student." Luna answered. "All of these spells. The last time I saw spells like these were Starswirl the Bearded's"
"So can you perform the spell?" Luna hesitated as she studied the book.
"I think so." She answered, though there was a tone in her voice that suggested she thought otherwise.
Carter stood there in silence before kneeling down near her. "Are you sure?"
Luna looked at him and Carter could tell she was nervous. "Sort of."
"I scared too." Carter said, not sure how to react in this situation.
"You aren't the one who has to cast a spell to saved two entire worlds." Luna commented, finally voicing her fears.
"True. But I imagine even I would be nervous if I were in your position."
Luna blinked and nodded in agreement. "Indeed. So many lives depend on this going right. I can't risk failing."
"I don't know you very well, but for what it's worth I believe that you'll get this right." Carter gave her a pat on the back as he gave her these words of encouragement. Luna smiled and nodded.
Suddenly Rainbow burst in. "We found it!" She announced.
Luna's gaze hardened into determination and both she and Carter stood up from their positions, Luna slamming the book shut and levitating it.
"Let us see if you are correct, Sheriff Jack Carter." She said grimly. Carter only nodded.

As Henry and Nathan worked to piece together the machine, Celestia studied with fascination. Despite the apparent lack of technology in her world, Celestia proved to be surprisingly knowledgeable about technology.
"Equestria is not entirely mechanically lacking." She explained when they asked bout where she got her knowledge. "Recently some ponies have been dabbling in machinery and other technologies."
Even with that in mind, Celestia was still curious about the device and by the time the screwed the last screw in place, she'd learned much about machinery and technology.
"Well, it's done." Henry announced proudly as he stepped back to gaze at his newly reconstructed machine.
"Good cause I found the rift." Jo announced as she walked into the garage.
Instantly the mood in the room changed from light to dead serious.
"Good." Celestia said to Jo before turning to Henry. "Let us hope that this goes well."
Henry could only nod as they loaded the machine onto his truck.
/
Rainbow Dash led Carter and Luna to the rift. At their approach, Applejack turned her attention towards them.
"Are we ready?" She asked as they approached.
"I believe so." Carter answered the earthpony. Luna only nodded. "My question is if the others are ready."
As if on cue, a ball of golden light began to appear.
/earlier/
After loading up the teleporter, Jo drove them to the location of the rift, taking shortest route there was; which apparently involved driving over every single rock, bump and root. Soon they arrived at a field where the rift hovered several meters off the ground sparking and pulsing and growing.
As they climbed out of the car, Celestia landed beside them. Because she couldn't fit in the car, the Solar ruler had flown above them. Upon arrival, the group (except Jo) stared at the massive ball of energy as it pulsed and grew. A thrum filled the air and the watery forms of brightly colored winged horses appeared.
At their appearance, Celestia frowned and a look of concern etched across her face. Noticing this, Henry placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Why don't you contact Carter and see how they're doing on their side?" He suggested.
Nodding, Celestia's horn glowed and a ball of golden light formed. It then cleared to reveal Sheriff Carter's face.
"We have found our side of the rift and have prepared the machine." She announced. "How are things on your side?"
Luna then appeared in the ball of magic. "We have also located the rift here." She informed. "And I have thoroughly studied Twilight's notes."
Celestia nodded. "And do you believe you can do this?"
Luna hesitated and Celestia saw the fear in her eyes. "I have faith in you sister." Celestia encouraged.
Luna closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened them once more, they shone with new resolve. "Thank you sister. I shall endeavour to not fail you."
Celestia smiled and turned towards the rift. As she spoke with her sister, Henry and the others had unloaded the device and were setting it up near the rift.
"We're as ready as we'll ever be." Henry announced.
Celestia nodded and turned to her sister's image and they both shared a brief silent exchange. Turning, Celestia inhaled her own calming breath before closing the communication and moving towards the machine.
/
After the connection shut off, Luna turned to the ponies (plus one human) gathered behind her.
"We are ready." She informed them, attempting to keep a steady tone in her voice but ultimately failing.
/
Henry put the finishing touches and sat back to admire his work. Normally Henry would take a moment to revel in his accomplishment. Maybe even look it over in case. But today he wasn't allowed these luxuries. As it was, they were pressed for time to say the very least.
Another tremor jerked Henry from his thoughts as he steadied himself. 'That one was stronger than before.' He observed with concern. From the corner of her eye she noticed Celestia walking, or trotting, towards him.
"We're primed and ready to go." Henry announced as she approached.
Celestia nodded and turned her gaze upwards. "Then let us begin."
/
Back on the Equestria side, Luna trotted up to the rift and began to perform the spell. Blue magic covered her horn and swirled around as it grew larger and brighter.
/
At the same time Henry placed an orange on the small platform and started the machine. The device whirred and glowed as the orange began to dissolve as it was disassembled.
/
With the spell ready, Luna took aim and a beam of blue light shot up towards an area above the rift.
/
Back in Eureka, the teleporter shot a similar beam right towards the exact same spot. On both sides of the rift, everyone and everypony held their breath as their hopes rose.
Suddenly, the white light produced by the teleporter flickered and died.
\\\\\\\
Luna frown and released the magic around her horn. "Strange." She said wonderingly.
"What's strange?" Carter asked, equally confused and a little panicked.
"It seems as though I've lost contact with the other signal." Her frown deepened. "Something is very wrong."
\\\\\\\
Celestia's stomach clenched as she watched the light flicker and die. Almost immediately Henry and Nathan converged on the device with her not too far behind.
"What happened?!" She asked frantically as Henry examined the device.
"The signal." He started in an equally frantic voice. "It's not strong enough!"
Before anyone could respond to this information on either side a rumble like an earthquake was felt both in Eureka and Equestria. Then the world went white, leaving the Celestial sisters suddenly alone on both sides.
\\\\\\\
Startled by the sudden disappearance of their companions, Celestia and Luna experienced a moment of panic. After that moment, the sisters shook themselves from their panic and observed their surroundings. From their position it seemed as though the entire world had vanished into white, taking with it everypony and everything. Except, in Celestia's case, the teleportation device. Though both could still feel the ground beneath their hooves.
'The worlds are growing closer.' Celestia realized.
'If we don't fix this soon, all will be destroyed.' Luna thought.
At that moment both sisters noticed something else. No more then five feet away, each saw the ghostly image of the other. They stared for a moment before they both nodded and turned. As Luna charged up the spell, Celestia picked up the strange device and examined it. She may not know much about this type of machinery, but she understood that the signal worked much like a spell.
'In that case the answer in simple.' Celestia decided. The light surrounding her horn intensified and the machine hummed to life. At that moment, Luna launched her spell once again. Within the second, the device also launched it's own signal, the white light mixed with a golden light. This time, the two signals crossed and a ball of white, blue and golden light appeared right above the first.
The effects were almost instantaneous. Trails of light were pulled from each rift and into the other as both rifts seemed to pull one into the other. As they watched the rifts pulled each other together, the world began to vibrate. At first it started small, but then it quickly grew until it shook them to their bones and vibrated them to their teeth. And then, everything went white.
Well, here we are. The epic ending. I almost can't believe that I'm finishing a story. Apologies if you don't like the resolution. Like I said, I'm no good with science but it seemed like a good way to destroy an interdimensional portal. Still one more chapter before we can officially end this story, but it's been a good run. Hope you enjoyed! Please review!
