Previous Chapter Next ChapterAuthor's notes: Phew! That was a long one. There's more stories in this saga to come. Keep your eyes open.
Falcon and Helen
Sweetie Belle: So I guess after Jim left, all 9 of you were left to run the Mid Sodor Railway.
Duke: Actually there were only 8 of us left to run the line by ourselves. Millie, Atlas, Miney, Tim, Proteus, Stuart, Falcon and myself.
Pipsqueak: But wait a minute, wasn't Freddie still there?
Freddie: No not really you see I was sold to work at that Aluminium Works near Peel Godred to help keep the Aluminium Works above water. This was before Jim came by the way.
Narrator: Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Freddie and the other ponies shuddered.
Sir Handel: Oh dear. Please don't mention that place again.
Peter Sam: Yeah don't remind us. It makes our wheels wobble.
Luna: After how that horrid man treated you all, we do not blame the 3 of thou.
Narrator: The ponies engines and drivers jumped. The Alicorn Princesses Luna Cadence and Celestia and even Prince Shining Armor had quietly been listening in to the old engines tales about the of the mid sodor railway.
Twilight: Princess Celestia! Princess Luna! Princess Cadence and BBBFF (Hugs Shining Armor) how long have you been there?
Celestia: Heheheheh. Since Duke told the story from when he and his brothers and sister came to the railway.
Shining Armor: I must, say you guys sure had a lot of adventures back then.
Duke: Hohohohoho we sure did you're majesty and you're highnesses
Narrator: The 3 alicorn princesses and prince Shining Armor all laughed.
Shinging Armor: Heheheh. You don't have to call us anything that formal, you just can call me Shining Armor.
Cadence: And you can call me Cadence.
Luna: And thou can refer to me as Luna.
Celestia: And you can call me Celestia.
Narrator: Duke Chuckled.
Cadence: So what happened after Jim left the Mid Sodor line?
Duke: Well after Freddie and Jim left, the manager decided to buy 2 fresh engines named Jerry and Helen to help us out with the MSR traffic of passengers and goods. And I even remember one certain Loughborough engine who really fancied Helen, right, Falcon.
Narrator: Duke winked playfully at Sir Handel who was blushing bright red.
Sweetie Belle: Aww. I didn't know you had crush too Sir Handel.
Sir Handel: (Blushing) Uh.. well… I … uh… well.. uh…
Narrator: The ponies engines and drivers laughed.
Duke: Heheheh oh don't feel embarrassed. As matter of fact, he along with Jerry and (winks) Stuart actually did manage to save them.
Mr. Hawkins: Well, what happened to them?
Narrator: Duke cleared his throat and told the story about how Jerry and Helen went on their 1st days on the MSR.
(Mid Sodor, 1927.)
Narrator: Duke, Stuart, Falcon, Mr. Holden, Miss Ravens, the other mid sodor engines and the ponies all felt lonely when Jim left the Mid Sodor Railway. They missed him very much. They had more work to do and were rushed off there wheels. more and more people came to ride the Flying Falcon and The Picnic and other passenger trains. More and more ships called at the port and everyone had to work hard around the clock. No sooner had they arrived with one train then they had to go out again with another. One day, Falcon came in tired and unhappy as he came to the transfer siding with the Horse and Cart with Rainbow Dash when Fluttershy and Edward arrived at 5 am pushing a flat truck. Falcon didn't even notice what was on it. Fluttershy had arrived on board Edward to be ready with her next shift with Tim.
Edward: Hullo there young Falcon. You look upset. What's the matter?
Rainbow Dash: Oh, he's sad because a friend of his got sold to another railway and he misses him.
Edward: Oh I see. It must have been a bit rough for you young Falcon.
Falcon: (Sadly) Oh just terrible.
Edward: I understand. Sometimes friends come and go. But keep your chin up. It's summertime and it's a beautiful this time of the year.
Narrator: Falcon sighed sadly.
Falcon: (Sad sigh.) After last month, nothing seems beautiful at all. Goodness I'm starting to sound like Tim. No offense to him at all.
Fluttershy: Well then, why don't you look at what's on the flat truck there.
Narrator: Falcon looked and saw a green engine with six wheels being pulled off by Stuart. Then he gaped when he saw the next engine. It was similar to the green one, only this one was red and Falcon felt that there was something special about the engine.
Falcon: Wow… who… who are they?
Fluttershy: Oh just two new engines that the manager bought. The green one's a boy and that red one is a girl engine.
Falcon: Good lord… Is she beautiful. I wonder what that red engines name is?
Edward: Well why don't you go and ask her?
Mr. Holden: Yeah come on Falcon. Let's go meet her?
Falcon: (Stammering.) Oh yes… I guess I will. (Puffs off to her after Peter Sam shunts the green engine to the sheds to be serviced as Rainbow Dash snickers.) I'll go up and… I'll tell her… You're the most beautiful… Engine… uh no that's too soon. Uh perhaps maybe… I you're the most gorgeous engine I've… no still too sudden. I've never seen any engine anywhere so… Uh… I'll just say… (Stops next to her.) Hullo.
?: Hmm… Oh Hullo there. I've take it your one of the Mid Sodor's native engines?
Falcon: Uh… yes I am… Uh… I hope this… isn't rude of me… but… uh… may I ask… what your… uh name is?
Narrator: The little engine smiled.
Helen: Oh don't worry. You weren't being rude at all. My name is Helen…
Falcon: (Sigh happily.) Helen …
Helen: That's right…
Falcon: (Blushing.) Uh… m-m my name is-is uh… Falcon.
Helen: Falcon?
Falcon: (Blushing) Mmhmm
Helen: That's a very nice name Falcon…
Falcon: Oh why thank you, and Helen is such lovely name too..
Rainbow Dash: (Inside Falcon's cab, snickers.) Looks like that Loughborough engines is trying to make it big with her. Heheheh (Mr. Holden covers her mouth.) MMMmmm….
Mr. Holden: Rainbow Dash, keep it down loud mouth…
Falcon: So um… anyway… Welcome to the Mid Sodor Railway… my dear Helen. (Gasps blushes brighter with a hinge of embarrassment.) (In head.) Oh my goodness I can't believe I said that… (To Helen.) Oh dear. I'm sorry if I offended you by calling you dear…
Helen: Oh it's alright. That was quite gentlemanly of you Falcon darling… (Gasps blushing too with a hinge of embarrassment.) (In her head.) Oh my goodness I can't believe I said that (To Falcon.) I'm so sorry if I offended you by calling you darling…
Falcon: Oh it's alright, its alright. That was very kind of you.
Narrator: The two engines soon stopped blushing and smiled at each other and then Falcon went and helped Helen off her truck on to the Mid Sodor rails. Just then, the manager arrived with Miss Ravens.
Manager: Hullo there Falcon. I see you've met one of our new recruits, Helen. I want you Mr. Holden and Rainbow Dash to teach her the ropes.
Mr. Holden/Falcon/Rainbow Dash: Yes sir. We will sir.
Manager: Good. Now then, Fluttershy, Miss Ravens, you'll be working with Helen too.
Miss Ravens/Fluttershy: Yes Sir we won't let you down.
Manager: Good, now then, you two will be taking a stopping passenger train up to the top station and back.
Narrator: Soon they lit Helen's fire and she sizzled happily.
Helen: Oh goodie. It's to finally be in steam for the first time.
Miss Ravens: That's good. You're really gonna love this line, I promise.
Fluttershy: Yeah, with so many beautiful landscapes with cute little animals, well, so long as they don't get in the way.
Helen: I understand.
Rainbow Dash: But yeah, you're gonna have a blast here.
Helen: Thank you Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Miss Ravens.
Mr. Holden: Well come on then, you two we'd better collect our coaches.
Narrator: And the two engines went off together to collect their coaches. Soon they were ready and waiting at the station. Falcon was coupled to the train with Helen In front. When the guards flag waved, Miss Ravens and Mr. Holden opened up the regulators and the two engines let out a burst of steam. Slowly, the train started moving out of the station. Helen felt excited as they gathered speed and headed towards Peel Godred. It wasn't long before they were out on the open line. Helen gazed in wonderment as they puffed along the estuary and through the woods but she made sure to be very careful.
Helen: (Sigh) It is so lovely. Couldn't be better. It just couldn't be better.
Fluttershy: I know. Its so peaceful and the locals are very friendly.
Falcon: I'm glad that you love it here I do too
Rainbow Dash: Well, you're easily impressed Helen. Heh you haven't even seen the mountain road yet.
Helen: What's the mountain road?
Falcon: It's a section of our line that climbs the big mountain called Gob-Y-Deghan.
Helen: Oh… how exciting.
Falcon: Yes, but just make sure to pay attention… I nearly had a nasty spill there once if Duke hadn't saved me.
Helen: I understand. (Gulp) I'll be very careful then.
Falcon: Don't worry. They've made it much more safer now than it was before.
Helen: Whew! Thank goodness. So what's it like.
Mr. Holden: Well the route is pretty much one curve after the other.
Miss Ravens: We cross the river arles twice to get further up the mountain then we travel several feet above the valley.
Helen: Oh my, it sounds so beautiful.
Fluttershy: Oh it is indeed.
Narrator: Soon they reached the works station, rested, and then started again. The two engines rattled through the first tunnel, then crossed the river arles then looped round, re-crossed the river arles and rattled through the second tunnel. Helen was amazed at how beautiful everything looked but she remembered to be careful and payed attention to what was in front of her. As they kept on climbing, they reached their destination safely and Mr. Holden, Miss Ravens, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy got the two engines ready for the homeward journey. Helen had wonderful day out. The coaches thought that she was very sweet and the two drivers and the ponies were very pleased. When they got back that night, Falcon and Helen rolled in next to Stuart and the other engine who was called Jerry.
Stuart: Hullo Falcon, how was you're trip?
Falcon: Very good actually. Helen did absolutely wonderful.
Helen: Oh Thank you Falcon, and I enjoyed my journey very much. I was a little afraid of the Mountain Road but Falcon told me I nothing to worry about.
Jerry: That's good, sister.
Helen: And the best part is, manager says that I can go out again tomorrow.
Falcon: Oh that's fantastic. I am so happy for you.
Duke: Same here. Well done youngin. That would definitely suit his grace.
Narrator: Falcon and Helen were so tired and happy that they smiled as they fell asleep at once, they didn't even notice Stuart and Jerry winking at each other and giggle. The next morning, Falcon was happily shunting trucks around the yards humming tiptoe through the tulips when Stuart bustled to collect his trucks grinning.
Stuart: Hullo there Falcon. You seem very happy today.
Falcon: Oh but of course my dear Stuart. It's such a wonderful day. The sun is shining the bird are singing and Helen is doing very well on her passenger runs. So how's Jerry been?
Stuart: (Trying not to laugh.) Oh he's doing good, just learned how to deal with trucks and he's doing well too. I see you're very impressed by Helen's performance.
Falcon: (Sigh.) You bet Stuart. She's a credit to the railway.
Stuart: Are you sure it's not because you have little crush on her?
Narrator: Falcon just blushed embarrassingly.
Falcon: What? Oh no no no no. We're just friends. I mean, it's only her first week here.
Stuart: Oh come on. I can tell you have a crush on her.
Falcon: Stuart, knock it off.
Narrator: Stuart couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for teasing.
Stuart: Alright, I'm sorry I teased you. I was just having a bit a fun with my older brother.
Falcon: Oh, that's ok.
Narrator: Stuart quickly went to fetch his stopping passenger train while Falcon chuckled slightly.
Falcon: Heh… Typical. I should have seen that one coming from my own brother
Narrator: He smiled ruefully and went about his work. A few hours later, Falcon was at the works station with a stopping train. He had a good run and was happily resting while Mr. Holden and Rainbow Dash were servicing him. He was still thinking about Helen when Jerry bustled in with the Horse and cart.
Jerry: Hullo Falcon. How's the love bird engine doing?
Falcon: Oy! What are you talking about there Jerry?!
Jerry: Come on now Falcon. I can see that look in you're eye. You've got a little a crushy wushy on Helen.
Narrator: Jerry only meant to be playful with Falcon like Stuart was, but as Falcon had only just met Jerry yesterday, was indignant.
Falcon: What?! I have no idea what you're talking about! Me and Helen are….uh… Just friends.
Narrator: Rainbow Dash snickered and winked At applejack who also had giggle fits.
Rainbow Dash: (Quietly.) Love bird…
Jerry: Oh come on! I know you have a crush on my sister! I can see it. Heheheheheh…
Falcon: Knock it off. It's just mutual. We're only friends!
Applejack: Whoa there now. Simmer down there…(Snickering.) Lover boy..heheheh
Rainbow Dash: Yeah, what was it that I heard you say at the when she first arrived? Oh that's right. "Golly. Oh, is she beautiful." HAHAHAHAHA
Falcon: What?! Uh… I… I Meant that she looked beautiful. That's all… it doesn't mean you have to fall in love…
Jerry: Oh come on. Admit it. You love her. (Singing.) Oh Helen, I love you.
Miss Ravens: Now you're pushing it Jerry.
Rainbow Dash: (Singing.) Helen I do.
Mr. Holden: Knock it off Rainbow Dash
Jerry/Applejack/Rainbow Dash: (Singing.) When we're apart, my heart beats only for you.
Narrator: Falcon went red in the face with both embarrassment and annoyance.
Falcon: Alright, knock it off you three! We're just friends!
Narrator: Soon, Falcon's guards whistle blew and he steamed off, exasperated. He started off with a wheel slip.
Mr. Holden: Whoa! Steady boy, steady.
Narrator: Falcon then pulled out of the station. Jerry chuckled and went to pick up so more trucks. He, Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Mr. Holden didn't even notice a tear trickle from Falcon's eye. Falcon arrived at the top station, whilst Rainbow Dash went to grab a bite to eat, Falcon feeling very embarrassed went to the sheds to be serviced by Mr. Holden.
(Falcon looks at a reflection of himself in a puddle of water.)
Falcon: (Sad) Oh blow… I hate being made fun of. Why does everyone have to be so mean about it .
Mr. Holden: There there now. There's nothing to be embarrassed about falling in love. Everyone knows that, and Stuart has even apologised for teasing you.
Narrator: Falcon still felt sadder still.
Falcon: I know but, Jerry just seemed to think it's funny and so does Rainbow Dash and Applejack. (Idea) I know. I'll just stay in the sheds for always and always and always. (Sad tear trickles.)
Narrator: Mr. Holden was about to try to reason with him when Duke came into the station with Twilight Sparkle and saw him in the sheds.
(Duke pulling into the station with the picnic.)
Duke: (Singing.) Oh, I am glad. I'm glad. I'm me. I'm glad I'm the way I am today. (Stops singing and back to talking.) Hullo there youngin'.
Falcon: (Nervous.) Uh, hullo there Granpuff.
Narrator: Duke then stopped he saw that Falcon looked unhappy.
Duke: What's matter youngin'? Broken down or something?
Falcon: Oh, uh no. I'm fit as fiddle.
Twilight: Is you're crew late?
Falcon: Oh uh no I'm just getting serviced for the run down.
Narrator: But Duke wasn't convinced. And when he was uncoupled from the coaches, Twilight Sparkle drove him over to the sheds.
Duke/Twilight: Oh hullo there Falcon
Duke: Sorry bout that. Twilight and I didn't recognise you at first. The sheds really do need better lighting. Heheheh.
Falcon: That's alright Granpuff.
Twilight: Why the long face Falcon. Is something wrong?
Falcon: (Nervous) Uh well, uh sort of. But I'd uh rather not discuss it.
Mr. Holden: Come on Falcon. You'll feel better once you've told them.
Falcon: (Sad.) Oh no it won't. You two will more likely turn it into a laughing stock.
Narrator: Duke and Twilight smiled kindly.
Duke: Now, there there Falcon. You know as well as I do that you can tell me and Twilight anything.
Twilight: And I promise me and Duke won't laugh at you. Cross my heart and hope to fly stick a cupcake in my… (Puts her hoof in her eye before closing it.) Ahh!
Falcon: You ok, Twil?
Twilight: Heh, yeah. Just need to work on that. Hehehehehe.
Duke: Heh. But anyway, she's right. You know as well as I do that I would never laugh to hurt your feelings. That would never suit his grace.
Narrator: Falcon took and deep breath and confessed.
Falcon: Oh alright…. I have a crush on Helen. But I don't know how to tell her.
Twilight: Oh you're in love eh? Is that all?
Falcon: No Twilight, Stuart and Jerry tease about having a crush on her. Well, I knew Stuart was just playing around, but Jerry was making me into a laughing stock and so were Rainbow Dash and Applejack.
Duke: Ah, I see you're scared to admit that you're in love. I understand. Cheer up Falcon. I think it's wonderful that you have a crush on Helen.
Twilight: Yeah, and so do I.
Falcon: But Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Jerry all laugh and make fun of me. It hurts.
Narrator: Falcon felt sadder still, but Duke and Twilight wanted to cheer him up.
Duke: Oh there there my grandson. There's nothing to be ashamed about falling in love. To tell you the truth, I too have fallen in love as well with one of the engines that you've never met. You have nothing to be embarrassed of. Look, I'll have a talk with Jerry about this.
Twilight: And I'll have a talk with Rainbow Dash and Applejack a well.
Duke: Say how about we take our trains together and double head it home.
Falcon: Sure. Thank you Granpuff.
Narrator: By now Falcon had felt a lot better. When Rainbow Dash returned, Mr. Holden told her about the change in plans and then they coupled the stopping train up with the picnic and the two engines set off happily. The next morning, the manager came to see Helen.
Manager: You are doing absolutely well. Now you need to learn how to look after trucks.
Helen: (Nervous.) Uh… Y-yes sir.
Narrator: Helen was secretly worried. She had heard that trucks could be troublesome, but she knew what it meant to be a really useful engine and set to work. The trucks unfortunately saw that Helen was nervous and gladly saw a chance for tomfoolery.
Truck: Oy lads, look. We've got a new engine. How's about we give her the old initiation of pushing her down the mountain road?
Trucks: Yes.. excellent idea. Let's do it.
Truck leader: We'll do it on the return journey.
Narrator: Helen didn't hear this as she collected her trucks and started away.
Fluttershy: Alright, just be very careful Helen. Trucks are troublesome sometimes.
Helen: Righto Fluttershy. Alright, come along. Come along.
Narrator: At first, the trucks followed quietly and smoothly as they went up the line and Helen thought they were under control.
Helen: Hmm? That's odd. I thought trucks would be troublesome? But I guess I was wrong.
Narrator: They soon reached the top station and Helen rested to before starting her journey down. At that moment, Falcon arrived with his express train the Flying Falcon. He saw Helen working with the trucks and was worried.
Falcon: Be careful with those trucks Helen. You need to always have you're wits about you with them.
Helen: I understand. Thank you for the warning.
Narrator: Falcon watched anxiously as she pulled out of the station and was out of sight. Things were going smoothly at first but as they left Ballamoddey, Miss Ravens applied her brakes, whistled to guard to check Cora's brakes too. Before the guard could check the brakes, the trucks surged forward.
Trucks: ON! ON! ON!
Narrator: Helen, taken by surprise, couldn't stop them and in a minute they were careering down the Mountain Road. Helen whistled in horror.
Helen: HELP! HELP! HELP!
Fluttershy: HELP US! PLEASE!
Miss Ravens: Not now. Hold on Helen!
Narrator: Falcon Heard this and was horrified.
Falcon: Mr. Holden, Rainbow Dash! That's Helen's whistle! We need to save her!
Rainbow Dash: But we have a train to..
Mr. Holden: Forget the train. We need to save Helen!
Narrator: Mr. Holden opened the regulator wide open and Falcon raced as fast as he could to save Helen. Helen meanwhile was racing down hill faster than a roller coster. She felt as if she was going to fly right off the curve falcon nearly fell off. The accident happened so fast that she along with Fluttershy and Miss Ravens were terrified and didn't know what to do. She began to cry when suddenly she heard a loud whistle!
Falcon: HOLD ON HELEN! I'M COMING!
Narrator: It was Falcon. He was racing to rescue her. Suddenly, Miss Ravens got an idea.
Miss Ravens: I've got a plan. Fluttershy, we need to couple Falcon up to Cora. The guards got his hand brake on and if Mr. Holden uses Falcon's brakes, we maybe able to stop the trucks mad rush.
Fluttershy: But how?
Miss Ravens: We'll use the fire poker here to couple him to brake van. We've no time to lose.
Narrator: Fluttershy was scared but she knew this was their only chance. She took the fire poker and raced towards Cora and falcon to couple them together.
Falcon: Helen! I need to tell you something, just incase we don't make.
Helen: What is it?
Falcon: I…I… I've always had crush on you since you've arrived… I'm sorry if I…
Helen: Say no more Falcon….(Happy tears.) I love you too Falcon.
Narrator: Falcon couldn't believe what he heard. She did love him after all. Miss Ravens set the reverser hard over, full steam and brakes hard on. Then, running along the train, she applied all the wagon brakes on each truck. Fluttershy flew along side Falcon and Cora with the fire poker, trying to catch the coupling. The train swayed and lurched. They came nearer and nearer to Falcon's leap. Then with a great effort she caught the coupling with the fire-poker and coupled it to Falcon's front coupler, then flew safely into Helen's cab. Mr. Holden set his reverser hard over full steam brakes hard on and whistle. Falcon's brake's screamed as sparks shot and flew. They came to the corner Helen shut her eyes and waited for the crash but it never came. Helen opened her eyes and she breathed a sigh of relief. She and her runaway train grounded to a stop.
Helen: (Shaken.) Oh. Whew. Oh thank you Falcon… You were splendid.
Falcon: (Sheepishly.) Oh well, it was nothing really. All in a days work.
Narrator: Hours later, the manager was waiting at the works station for Helen to arrive with her train. Duke, Stuart and Jerry along with Applejack, Rarity and Twilight were there too. Soon they heard two horse whistles Helen arrived he was shocked to see Falcon behind her.
Manager: What is the meaning of this Falcon? You're supposed to be on your be on your stopping train duties?
Helen: Please sir. Falcon was splendid Sir.
Manager: Huh?
Fluttershy: That's right. If it wasn't for him, Helen would have had a terrible crash.
Rainbow Dash: Yeah, you should be very proud of Falcon.
Narrator: Then they told him all about the near accident that Helen almost had.
Manager: I see.
Helen: This engine is a true hero. He along with his crew and my crew have saved all of our lives.
Narrator: The manager beamed proudly.
Manager: Heheheh. Well, I must say I am very proud of you Falcon. I never thought that I'd see an engine leave his train at the station to save another train from a terrible crash. That was very brave and mature of you. I'm proud of you. You and Helen are very brave
Falcon: (Panting and smiling) thank you Sir.
Manager: No, thank you Falcon. Now then, since you two will be needing some repairs for the night, I'll have Stuart and Rarity collect you're coaches and Jerry Applejack will take you're goods Helen.
Narrator: The two engines were then put into the worksheds next to Jerry, Stuart and Duke, and Duke and Stuart had to leave. Jerry, Applejack and Rainbow Dash all apologized to Falcon.
Jerry/Applejack/Rainbow Dash: We're sorry we teased you. You were awesome out there.
Stuart: Same here I'm sorry I started it. I
Falcon: (Smiling.) That's alright brother. You were only teasing me, and I forgive you too Jerry Applejack and Rainbow Dash.
Jerry: Thanks Falcon and well done and thank you for saving my sister.
Falcon: Oh, anytime Jerry.
Narrator: And soon Stuart and Rarity went to collect Falcon's express whilst Jerry and Applejack got Helen's next goods train.
Duke: Well done grandson. You're bravery would definitely suit his grace.
Falcon: Granpuff, thank you for everything.
Duke: All in the line of Duty young Falcon.
Narrator: And Duke puffed away to collect his trucks. That night, Falcon and Helen were alone at the worksheds.
Helen: Oh Falcon, thank you so much for saving me. You truly are a brave engine just like Duke.
Falcon: Well I just couldn't bare to see you roll down the mountain road and get smashed into pieces like I nearly did.
Helen: You? You had near miss on the Mountain Road too?
Falcon: Indeed I did.
Narrator: And he told her all about the time that Duke had saved him from falling off the Mountain Road. Helen was impressed.
Falcon: And I just didn't want you to suffer the same fate and without someone to save you.
Helen: Falcon, you truly are the most wonderful and most really useful engine of all.
Falcon: Oh thank you, and same goes for you too Helen.
Narrator: The two engines eyes twinkled happily, and for the first time since they arrived on the Mid Sodor Railway they smiled happily as they bestowed there very first Kiss in the beautiful Sudrian star and moonlit night, knowing deep in the hearts that come what may they'd be together within their hearts for always and always and always.
